Yea, they used to be a black/doom metal band with lots of harsh vocals (Mikael Akerfeldt took on that role at one point actually), but shifted to a more depressive rock sound after a couple of albums. Brave Murder Day is generally considered the best of their old stuff. As for the new stuff, I've only heard the most recent three albums and they are all pretty good.

I've decided I want to acquire all Discordance Axis and Gridlink full-length albums.

thanks, ill give Katatonia a try once im able to get to my computer at my dads in April also Discordance Axis are great, though Gridlink is incredible possibly my favorite Grindcore band, if youre still looking into some Grindcore then i highly recommend this album

I'll give it a listen soon, thanks~

One metal band I started listening is DragonForce! I started listening when I played Guitar Hero. My favorite song is through the fires and flames. Look them up. I think you'll find them pretty cool!

Unfortunately, I jumped off the Dragonforce train seven or eight years ago haha. If you like that style though (power metal), I recommend Blind Guardian. They've got a much better sense of songwriting than Dragonforce in my opinion.

Or if you're interested in power metal mixed with more extreme metal stylings, Children of Bodom is rad.

Holy sheet Coral, I know our tastes aren't always the same, but I was just randomly obsessing over Children of Bodom out of the blue.   Alexi Laiho inspires me as guitar player for reasons I don't understand myself.

I like all of their stuff, but there old stuff is special.

Also, Dragonforce's new stuff is actually decent.  (They're also starting to put harsh vocals in here and there.)

(They are still Dragonforce though so their new album won't exactly change your mind one or the other.)

I don't jam them like I used to, but Children of Bodom's first three albums are nothing if not completely badass. They've done a lot of good stuff after that but nothing quite on par with their former work in my opinion.

Dragonforce wooed me in early high school when I first heard "Through the Fire In Flames", but the fire died quickly after I listened to the rest of Inhuman Rampage and found out that every song sounds exactly the same. I haven't listened to their recent work, but I'm not really into power metal anymore anyways.

Times of Grace is my favorite Neurosis album.

I've been listening to Sybreed quite a bit. I don't like industrial metal too much but Sybreed is an awesome exception.

Yea Sybreed is awesome, industrial metal to me always seemed to be really awkward and forced but Sybreed makes it seem so natural and graceful. Ben's vocals are awesome and the riffs are so catchy. Antares is probably their best album but I also really like The Pulse of Awakening

I don't listen to them much anymore but they're a good band. I'm not really aware of any groups like them either, my fling with the band came and went pretty quickly.

Searched "longest metal song" and came across this gem.

I'm not really a fan of power metal to be honest...as far as long songs though, black metal typically delivers.

Discovered this band the other day, really awesome experimental black metal with heavy prog stylings.

randomly felt in the mood for Dark Tranquillity today

That's funny because I did too. I just read some quotes from the drummer talking about the next album, he said he's written six or seven songs of really fast, riff-heavy stuff which sounds amazing, even though I love everything they've done.

oh yes so were getting a really heavy one from Dark Tranquillity, kinda wish that they would have continued on with the more atmospheric sound off of Construct since i really loved that album, but still this is something great to look forward to

i havent actually heard any of their albums from the 90s, only the stuff from Damage Done and onwards, so this will be pretty interesting

WHAT you need to get on that immediately. The Gallery and The Mind's I are both classic melodeath albums, though I prefer the latter a tad more. Projector is slower and more experimental like Construct, and Haven is the band at their most melodic with heavy keyboard use and not as many riffs. Everything they do is gold though.

I'm not too keen on Soilwork unfortunately. But if you're binging melodeath, you'll kick yourself for not listening to Dark Tranquillity's early stuff sooner. Also have you heard the latest At the Gates and Carcass albums?

i have heard At War With Reality and i do love it, i tried listening to Carcass a long while ago but i couldnt get into them, ill try out Surgical Steel though

Surgical Steel is really good and I'm not huge on their old stuff either, so I'd say it's worth a shot.

*Thar's Nile video*

I was just talking about Nile with a friend the other day, I've tried getting into them but their style doesn't appeal to me, unfortunately. I did get to see them live once though, those guys are crazy talented.

You might dig these Thar.
