I'm sad that you don't like Focus because I like it so much but I guess you can't win them all!

I'm digging a lot of older tech/prog death metal, so much more personality than the stuff that comes out today.

hence why i wish i could get into that stuff, but it does nothing for me, Death-y/Thrash-y stuff bores me beyond belief

oh trust me Coral i really do wish that i could get into Focus, but ive tried it at least 10 times by now and all that i can get out of it is a bad headache, at least i can enjoy the later stuff.

I think Death's Individual Thought Patterns was a good starting point for me on that front. It was their first album that I got and has a very tech/math sound compared to their other albums, it's probably my favorite they've done. It's definitely opened me up to more death metal, but I'm still picky.

Glad you dig Traced In Air, the EP Carbon-Based Anatomy is good as well if you haven't checked that out.

Carbon-Based Anatomy was so damn solid, definitely showed off their softer sound better than the newer album did, but i still dont think that the new record is all that horrible

The new one is probably not as horrible as I made it out to be but I don't think it's anywhere close to anything the did before.

I also have to say that the new In Flames album has grown on me a bit. Still probably their weakest album overall but I do enjoy most of the songs for what they are. Just anther case of being underwhelmed due to high expectations.

i agree that Kindly Bent to Free Us is nowheres near as good as Traced In Air or Carbon-Based Anatomy (still prefer the new one way more than Focus).

ill give that new In Flames album a second try sometime, and i probably only feel disappointed with the new Darkest Hour album because after hearing The Human Romance i was expecting more atmospheric songs like Love As A Weapon, but instead i ended up getting an even more poppier and watered-down sounding record.

I'm probably not going to listen to the new Darkest Hour anytime soon, I haven't been into them for years.

As for In Flames, I think Come Clarity might be my favorite.

Come Clarity is a great one but i think i still prefer Reroute to Remain and Sounds of A Playground Fading

I dig the new In Flames album now. It just took some getting used to.

I'm not a letlive. fan. I think they're very good at what they do, but I don't really enjoy it. And the Glassjaw comparisons drive me crazy.

upon listening to it a second time its better than my first listen, but its still their worst

i love letlive. but we all have opinions, their sound does have a lot of Glassjaw influence in it, but i still think that theyre different enough to have their own sound.

I rediscovered my love for Opeth the other day.

i prefer the newer stuff over the older stuff, id probably say that Watershed, Blackwater Park and Damnation are my top picks for Opeth albums

also the new Finch album is a masterpiece, easily beats the hell out of WIITB and SHTS.

I don't like Watershed as much as I used to to, but "Heir Apparent" is a sick song. I think My Arms Your Hearse might be my favorite album of theirs, and Orchid and Morningrise are also awesome, though very different than what they did after that. I also think Deliverance is quite unique among their discography and is probably one of their more underrated albums.
