Well I hope you do well! Fear Before is awesome, at least up to that album.

Just started listening to Ash Borer, gotta say that they are absolutely sick,

Yea, they shortened their name to Fear Before and released a self-titled album. It's got some cool parts but it's mostly pretty bad, and has some of the worst lyrics I've ever read. I'd still check it out but it's not nearly on par with anything before it.

Ash Borer is pretty awesome, I've known about them for awhile but haven't gotten around to listening.

Listening to Agalloch all this week put me in a really black metal mood, so I'm checking out stuff. I'm going to delve into Panopticon and Fell Voices next. Probably going to spin some of my favorite Drudkh albums as well.

you should try Xasthur out as well, Telepathic With the Deceased has to be one of the darkest Black Metal albums, Xasthur himself said that he doesnt like talking about that album in interviews because he wrote that album during a darker time of his life or so ive heard. you should also add this band to your list since theyre up youre alley:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uap0I9Mo2sY

if youre having trouble searching up the band name then you could just type in nic pilsen

and yeah im reading the lyrics to that Fear Before self-titled, it sounds like the lyrics to some really bad pretentious hipster band

Looks like I gotta put my Top 5:

1. Dethklok

2. Avenged Sevonfold

3. Ozzy

4. Disturbed

5. DragonForce

I think that about covers it :P

going by my 5 most played "straight-up metal" bands on my last.fm account:

1. Deftones

2. Between the Buried and Me

3. Isis

4. Boris

5. Darkest Hour

anyways i listened to some of the earlier Touche Amore stuff during last weekend, damn they had a nice dark sound before Parting the Sea came out, still like the newer stuff better

Thanks for the recs, will check them out soon.

Is Survived By is probably the best Touche Amore album but the older, darker stuff was great, listen to the demo too if you haven't.

I love Glassjaw. But I bought Pale Folklore and I've been spinning it for a day. Agalloch aren't really remarkable with their instruments but they sure know how to do an atmospheric album. Really love how it's not a single unit type of album where you need to listen to the album as a whole instead of individual tracks to make you appreciate it much more. Kinda like Isis, Palms, Neurosis, Trophy Scars, Red Sparowes..etc etc..

Just got my hands on The Mantle but I'm still spinning Pale Folklore.

Glad you're enjoying Agalloch, they're really great. You're right in that they are pretty subdued instrumentally but I think it suits their style very well. I saw them live a few nights ago and I have no doubt that they are great musicians.

I think each of their first three albums are better than the last so hopefully the experience gets better for you with each album! The fourth is where a lot of people's opinions start to diverge but I think they've always put out great stuff. I put up a brief description of all their albums on their last page haha.

Yeah. It's not stupefying instrumental but they you used that to their advantage and wrote around their core sound/tone. I was tempted to start with whatever album of theirs that's held as their best but your brief description swerve me to start from the very beginning.

Hey guys, there's another new United Nations song and it's expectedly badass.

I preordered my album two days ago, super stoked to hear the whole thing.

Already preordered mine. All the three song that they released are all beautiful.

Also Geoff is in a new project with the members of Lostprophet. Curious to hear that one too.

Agalloch definitely arent the most interesting band musically, but they are a refreshing listen for when youre in the mood for straight up atmospheric music

also just about everyone loves Glassjaw

yay new United Nations

New Cannibal Corpse song

this is probably the 100th time and the probably the last time i ever try a death metal song, i got bored of it less than a minute into the song, this sort of stuff really doesnt do much at all for me, a lot of my friends are into it but i doubt ill ever become a fan of it, though if you dig it then thats fine by me.

Well I'm glad you like them! I'm definitely interested in hearing your opinions on their albums when you've finished them.

Geoff/ex-Lostprohets new band No Devotion just released a couple of singles actually, it's very dreamy, atmospheric and poppy, definitely worth checking out.

That new CC song was glorious. They still have it.

Any other death metal band recommendations? I feel like my list is pretty sterile.

A lot of people like Decapitated, check their album Winds of Creation

I'm not huge on death metal to be honest but I do like Opeth and Gojira.

Decapitated was the first death metal band I've ever listened to, and Winds of Creation is one of my all time favorite death metal albums. I've listened to:

Decapitated

Cannibal Corpse

Job for a Cowboy

Nile

Behemoth

Whitechapel

I feel like there's more, and I feel like not all of these are actually death metal, but eh.
