Lily blinked. "Uh...okay, no, I'll stick with...'Number 91'," she said. "It's much faster to say than an enormously long serial number that I won't remember any of," she added while muttering. She shook her head. "I know what the reasoning behind your comment was, and I take no offense, if you're concerned about that. Even so, the answer is no. I am very much alive and well."

She smiled slightly. "Now if we are to duel, would you rather start or may I?"

Number Ninety-One took a step back, and her arm transformed into a sort of Duel Disk. She decided to save the puzzle of how this strange woman was able to be alive when she was clearly dead for later. However, she still thought about it during her spare CPU cycles. It was...intriguing...She felt like she had something to do other than concentrate on her mission. "I do not know. My previous opponent let me go first." She shuffled her Deck and drew five cards. "How do you humans, living, deceased, or otherwise, usually go about this social maneuver?"

"Some flip a coin, some play rock-paper-scissors, some roll a dice, some say challenger starts, some say challenged starts, some just decide regardless of their opponent, and some ASK," Lily responded in a complete deadpan. "Some even do more complicated ways. I have no preference, but you seem to have even less of a preference."

As she spoke, she retreated a few paces and activated the Duel Disk on her arm, casually flicking her deck into the slot and drawing five cards of her own. "Since you seem so unconcerned, then I may as well take the first move, so you have experience going first and second," Lily mused, drawing a sixth card casually.

LP: 8000

She glanced at the cards and nodded. "I'll begin with my Slate Warrior!" A humanoid fiend with blue skin, orange suit, and a staff materialized on the field. (Lvl 4, 1900/400)

Lily slipped a card into the rear slot of the disk. "I'll set this and call it quits for this turn. Your turn."

Number 91 draws her card. "I draw, and I activate Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying your face-down card."
(If no response, this happens:)
"Next I will activate Instant Fusion, Special Summoning Cyber Saurus from my Extra Deck in Attack Position by paying 1000 Life Points."
A tin of something called "Instant Fusion" appeared on her side of the field, and opened up, causing purple smoke to spew out onto her side of the field. When the smoke cleared, a green-scaled dinosaur with a cannon for an arm roared and made its presence known. (1800 ATK, LV5)
"I will now Normal Summon Karakuri Strategist mdl 248 'Nishipachi' in Attack Position."
A mechanical nobleman with a map appeared on Number 91's field. (500 ATK, LV3)
"And now I will activate Machine Duplication, Special Summoning two more mdl 248s in Attack Position from my Deck."
Two duplicates of the robot strategist appeared. (500 ATK, LV3 x2)
"Now I will Synchro Summon."
Nishipachi quivers, and turns into three rings, which Cyber Saurus enters, becoming 5 stars.
"Calculating success of Synchro Summon. Success at 94.8% and holding. Synchro Summon, Appear now: Karakuri Great Shogun Bureido."
The array erupts into a horizontal beam of light, and a giant robot with spiky armor and a pair of huge swords appears in front of Number 91. (2800 ATK)
"Now I will Special Summon Karakuri Bushi mdl 6318 'Muzanichiha' in Attack Position from my Deck."
A robotic samurai with a straw hat appeared. (1800 ATK, LV4)
"Now I will Syncho Summon again."
The second Nishipachi quivers again, becoming three rings, while Muzanichiha turns into 4 stars upon entering the rings.
"Calculating success of Synchro Summon. Success at 97.2% and holding. Synchro Summon, Appear now: Karakuri Shogun mdl 00 'Burei'."
The second array erupts, and a smaller, yet still deadly-looking, shogun appears. (2600 ATK)
"Now I will repeat the process by Special Summoning another mdl 6318, and Synchro Summoning again."
Within a minute, another Burei was on the field from another Synchro Summoning involving a Muzanichiha and the final Nishipachi. (2600 ATK)
"Finally, I will Special Summon a final mdl 6318 in Attack Position from my Deck."
The third copy of the straw hat-clad robot samurai appeared. (1800 ATK)
"I will now activate Solidarity, increasing the ATK of all of my Machine-Type monsters by 800 points as long as all of the monsters in my Graveyard are Machine-Types."
All of Number 91's monsters seemed to become more powerful. (2800 ATK ->3600 ATK) (2600 ATK -> 3400 ATK x2) (1800 ATK -> 2600 ATK)
"Now, I will enter my Battle Phase. mdl 6318, attack Slate Warrior."
Muzanichiha does so, slashing at the blue-skinned figure. (Lily: 7300 LP)
"mdl 6318's ATK and DEF are decreased from Slate Warrior's effect, but that is irrelevant. mdl 00s, attack her directly."
Both Bureis whacked Lily with their oversized fans. (Lily: 500 LP)
"Bureido, attack Lily directly."
The giant sliced at Lily, finishing her off in yet another One-Turn Kill. (Lily: 0 LP)

Lily's facedown card shattered with no resistance, yet the Dark Signer was unfazed. She then calmly observed the remainder of Number 91's move with little more than a small smile. Did she really believe that it would be so easy to defeat one such as her?

"Quite the impressive maneuver," she noted with a small smirk. "You have assembled all the resources required to defeat me in one turn. An impressive feat to be sure, but only if you make the error of thinking you have what it takes to finish the match in one turn."

Slate Warrior groaned when struck and shattered, light emanating from its body and engulfing the monster that defeated it. As the first monster lunged towards her, Lily calmly took a card from her hand and placed it on her disk. "But you don't have what it takes! When I am attacked directly, I can Special Summon Battle Fader to the field from my hand, and end the Battle Phase on the spot!"

A fiendish pendulum appeared on the field, and Number 91's monsters halted in place. Lily smirked. "Too bad." (Lvl 1, 0/0)

Number 91 is taken aback. She wasn't planning on this sudden turn of events. Her processors quickly calculated that the chances of her victory dropped from 99.9999-repeating% to 71.58226808%, plus or minus 5.604848501%, depending on her opponent's next move. "You are very observant. However, you clearly have the disadvantage. I have 4 monsters with over 2500 ATK each. You have one monster with 0 ATK. Clearly, the odds are in my favor. I set a face-down and end my turn." Number 91 readied herself for whatever this strange creature might throw at her.

"I am aware of the disadvantage," Lily said, drawing her card and observing her hand thoughtfully. Now this is a fun little card. This duelist has no cards in her hand, so the time is right for this card. "I Tribute my Battle Fader, which gets removed from play due to its effect..." A rift appeared behind the pendulum, sucking it inside. "And Normal Summon my Ambitious Gofer!" (Lvl 6, 2400/100)

Words could not adequately describe the disturbing appearance of this new monster, as it had a bird-like beak and a giant, brain-like body. "I activate Ambitious Gofer's effect! Once per turn, I can choose up to two monsters on my opponent's field, and unless you show me a monster in your hand, those chosen monsters are destroyed. I choose your Great Shogun, and one of your not-as-great Shoguns!"

The eyes of the fiendish monster glimmered and the chosen monsters were surrounded with a white aura. "You have no cards in your hand, so I very much doubt you can do a thing to stop this effect."

(Response? If not...)

"I will then attack your Bushi, for even though its effect gives it more ATK, its effect also switches it to DEF position when I attack!"

Number 91 flipped her Trap Card up in response to her monster's destruction.

Karakuri Shogun's Body Double
Trap/Counter
Activate only when a "Karakuri" Synchro Monster is destroyed. Special Summon a "Karakuri" Synchro Monster of an equal or lower Level then the Level of the destroyed Synchro Monster from your Extra Deck in face-up Defense Position, and treat it as if it was a Synchro Summon. Then change the Battle Position of a face-up monster.

Bureido collapsed, but another Bureido appeared out of the ground, crossing his swords in a defensive stance. (1700 DEF)
"Due to the effect of my Trap Card, my second Bureido's effect activates, Special Summoning Karakuri Ninja mdl 919 'Kuikku' in Attack Position."
A robotic ninja with feminine qualities appeared next to the defending Bureido. (1700 ATK -> 2500 ATK)
"Also, my Body Double's second effect activates, switching your Gofer to Defense Position."
Previously-invisible wires laid down by the destruction of the first Bureido suddenly twisted Gofer into a defensive posture. (100 DEF)
"Furthermore, whenever a Karakuri monster is destroyed, my mdl 6318's effect activates, increasing his ATK by 400."
Muzanichiha did some swordplay, and his ATK rose. (2100 ATK -> 2900 ATK)

Lily frowned at the turn of events and studied the cards in her hand. This opponent was far trickier than she had expected, and she was still playing defensively. "I throw one card facedown," she replied, the hologram of another card image appearing behind her monstrosity. "That ends my turn."

The odds were clearly not in her favor, but she would not submit to this duelist. She had come so far in this tournament so far and did not intend to lose. The only way for her to acheive her goals was to win...she needed to win, and keep winning. The Spider Mark on her arm burned and she winced. The pain was far greater now than it usually was, yet Lily forced herself to remain focused.

Number 91 drew her card silently. She knew that she had the upper hand, as she had maintained in this duel, but this turn was crucial. She had her opponent in a corner, and she could easily win if she played her cards right. Normally, a duelist would be excited to be winning, or have some sort of expression if not anticipating their victory, but Number 91 was completely expressionless, since she did not have emotions. She was built to win, and she was going to do that. "I change Bureido to Attack Position, and activate his effect, allowing me to draw a card."
Number 91 drew another card as Bureido went back into Attack Position, and activated the card she drew earlier. "I now activate Bait Doll." A strange hammer and a voodoo doll appeared on her side of the field. "Bait Doll forces the activation of your face-down. If it is a Trap Card, and it cannot be activated at this time, it is destroyed. If it is not a Trap Card, however, it is returned face-down." Bait Doll's hammer pounded the doll, causing the face-down to quiver and rise up, revealing what it was.

Lily's Trap flipped up at the prompting, displaying a tornado swirling. "You forced the activation of my Dust Tornado," Lily noted. "This destroys one Spell or Trap card on my opponent's field, such as your Solidarity." A dusty-wind tornado emerged from the card and approached Number 91's Solidarity card, engulfing the Spell with the dusty wind. Lily continued, "And if I so desire, I may then Set one Spell or Trap from my hand, but I'll give that effect a pass."

She merely gave a small smile to her opponent. If her monster had not been forced into Defense, Dust Tornado may have been able to turn the tides of Battle once her monsters were weaker. Unfortunately, it hadn't worked the way she wanted.

Lily didn't respond as her Gofer shattered apart, leaving her wide open. She merely cast a tiny glance at her hand. As Number 91's first monster slashed her, she hunched over from the blow, but then she smirked coldly and the Mark of the Spider glowed intensely on her arm.

Yet she did nothing, until mdl 00 hit her and sent her recoiling a pace.

"At this moment, I activate the effect of Gorz, the Emissary of Darkness!" she announced, slapping the card from her hand onto her disk. "If I have no cards on my field when I take Battle Damage, I Special Summon it!" A rather handsome fiend appeared on the field, in between Lily and the remaining Karakuri. (Lvl 7, 2700/2500)

"Since Gorz was Special Summoned due to me taking Battle Damage, I Special Summon an Emissary Token, and its stats are equal to the damage I took. Your Karakuri had 2600 ATK, so my token has 2600 DEF!" (Lvl 7, 2600/2600)

Gorz shattered and Lily shrugged. She had known that might happen, but now she had to figure out a way to get back into the duel...or else she'd lose.

"It's my turn!" she announced, drawing with vigor. She looked at her drawn card. "I summon Grave Squirmer!" A bandaged mummy monster appeared. (Lvl 1, 0/0) She gazed at the opposing field, her eyes pausing on the facedown card.

I have a hunch I know what that card is. Karakuri Guard switches to ATK position when it is attacked, and it cannot be destroyed in battle while in ATK position. Grave Squirmer could attack it, and I'll take 600 damage, and then destroy one of his other cards. Then, my token can attack his Bushi, forcing it to defense and destroy it. It will still leave me open next turn, however.

"Grave Squirmer, attack Karakuri Guard!"

The mummy launched itself forward, preparing to strike the opposing canine.

Ah, Trick House. I expected Klock, but that was my second guess, Lily thought to herself. "I will simply have my token attack your Guard, switching it to Defense position and allowing it to be destroyed in Battle!" The fiendish token struck the canine monster and it shattered.

"I will then go to Main Phase 2, and activate Allure of Darkness! This lets me draw 2 cards, but in exchange I must remove one DARK monster from my hand, else I lose my entire hand," Lily said, reaching for her deck and flicking two cards from it. She glanced at the cards.

Number 91 quickly tried to figure out a way around the Trap Card as she drew her card. She analyzed the card in her hand, and crunched figures. She ran simulations on every single possible card she could have, and Number 91 could only see one possible path.
"I switch mdl 919 into Defense Position, then use Bureido's effect to draw a card."

As soon as Number 91 turned her mdl 919 to defense, Lily acted.

"I activate my Trap!" Lily all but snarled. Her card flipped up, displaying of monsters frozen in ice. "Grave of the Super Ancient Organism! As long as this card is in play, Special Summoned monsters of level 6 or more on my opponent's field cannot use their effects or attack! Number 91 is completely stunned. She stands there, trying to figure out what to do. For the first time in her existence, she feels like she will be unable to complete her mission. She feels incredible despair and sadness, wanting so badly to make her Master happy. Finally, something happens in her systems. New mechanisms activate around her visual sensors to secrete a lubricant to clean her eyes, but it overloads, sending transparent lubricant down her face. Her software that mimics breathing becomes corrupted, making her heave in sorrow. And her facial servos reconfigure her face to look depressed.
Number 91 has learned how to be sad.

The sudden shift in her normally emotionless opponent's demeanor caught Lily by surprise. Even with the Trap sealing the effects and attacks of her opponent's Synchros, as well as Lily's token, the duel was still heavily in her opponent's favor. Nevertheless, she drew and blinked at the card she received. What help would this be?

With a scowl, Lily threw a card into one of the rear slots of her disk. "I set a card, and switch my Token to defense. Turn End."

She clenched her fist. This wasn't fair. She was the leader of the Dark Signers, capable of defeating two of the known Signers...and here she was, clinging to under 3000 LP while her opponent sat safely behind no less than three Synchro monsters and 7000 LP. This should not be happening to her.

Lily clicked the button for her trap, a slightly wistful look on her face. "I activate Trap of Darkness. When my Lifepoints are 3000 or less, I pay 1000 of them and select a Normal Trap from my Graveyard. Trap of Darkness' effect then becomes the selected Trap's, and the Trap gets removed from play."

From the ground emerged a card displaying the Dark Ruler Ha Des and another fiend. "I activate the effect of the Hate Buster Trap in my Graveyard. When a fiend on my field is attacked, I destroy both monsters, and my opponent takes damage equal to his or her destroyed monster's original ATK. So the attacking Bureido is destroyed, as is my Token, and you take Bureido's original ATK as damage," she explained dryly. Kaien and the Karakuri shattered, leaving Lily completely defenseless.

Naturally, the next attack dropped her LP to 0.

Her Duel Calculator clicked her remaining losses from 2 to 1. And she just stood there with a blank look.

Number 91 knew the attack would work, but she still felt sad. She actually felt like she wasn't good enough to complete her mission, and it had moved her. She had no idea what to do about it, though. However, her constantly adapting and evolving programming though of something. She slowly stepped forward, one step at a time, her Duel Disk folding back into her arm, until she was less than a foot in front of Lily. Then, she slowly wrapped her arms around the Dark Signer's, and held the resurrected duelist against her.
Then Number 91, while hugging Lily, did something unexpected by whispering. "I am sorry."

Lily was stunned. Even Uru was quiet, brooding...scheming. How could she have lost so easily? Sure, there had been tough opponents before, but her deck had pulled through then, but couldn't this time. The odd woman had used those Karakuri monsters so smoothly and easily, forced out every defensive trump card Lily had, and foiled every aggressive maneuver.

This loss was not the end of her ambitions, however. She could still win this tournament, and ascend the ranks of respect...become the best duelist in the world at the end of the road. She wanted it. She needed it. There was nothing she craved more at this stage of her life. Her eyes stung with bitter anger, yet she had no outlet for it. Nothing to scapegoat, but her own failure.

She was then abruptly aware her opponent had made her way over to her, and she blinked when Number 91 embraced her. At first she wanted to recoil, to shun her with anger or contempt, but her words startled her. She was apologizing for winning? What kind of person did that?
