Judging

Recommended Posts

Alright, I have been asked to start this, but I agree with the ideas behind it so here's what I think. In contests, we need better people to be judges. There are quite a few card judges there who cannot make a good card themselves, so how can they really be a good judge? The fact is that bad judges often let bad cards win out of nepotism or out of spite for other members. I'm not saying that they should be outlawed entirely from judging, what I'm saying is that there needs to be more proactive judges who everyone knows make good cards. For example, I'm pretty new to the Contest circuit, but I judge as often as I can. Granted, I'm not the best in the world but I try to do a good job. I also see the same names judging. What I want to try to do as well is get a list of people who would be willing to do some judging off and on. You wouldn't have to be a permanent judge, just judge every now and then.
N/A
I would like to mention before a discussion of this that this is by no means a list of only people allowed to judge. This is merely a suggestion list of people who should judge. Also, I would prefer that no fights break out on this thread because I don't really want it locked. Everyone has their own judging style with their own merits, and there are bound to be disagreements. If you are in disagreement, have a PM rap session about it. If you have someone you wish to "nominate" into this, I will PM them about it to find out if they are truly interested. Until then, peace.

There should be a Official "Pool" of judges that can volunteer to Judge a Contest. People who know how to design cards should obviously be applicable.

Also Specific sections should be set out for each Judge. Myself for example is more of a PC Judge but can Judge RC when needed.

To be honest this is a pretty bad idea.
Just let the person running the contest pick the judges.
If they pick bad judges it's their fault and w/e.

Understandable but picking someone just because they happen to be their Friend just seems iffy to be honest. Better for a more experienced member to walk in and ask to be a guest judge.

Problem: You cannot expect these judges to be online all the time, and be willing or able to look and post on all these one on one's.

Solution: Let the public vote. Just because you aren't a card making God doesn't mean you lose the right to voicing your opinion.

Oh look, I've just given YCM 1,000,000 + votes, instead of a group that would amount to much less than 100.

I think that you both missed the point. Or perhaps I didn't clarify, I'll stick with that option. The idea isn't to make this a list of people allowed to judge and they are the only ones who can. This is supposed to be a list of people nominated to judge from time to time. Believe me, I understand that people can't be on all the time, I'm starting to get a little strapped for time myself. The problem though is that people who are judging right now aren't always qualified to judge. I would give names, but I'd rather not go down that road. Besides, all you would have to do is look into a few threads in the contest forum to get the idea. The idea behind this is to perhaps gain some volunteers to rate every now and then. Like perhaps once or twice a day if they happen to be on. Members who are reliable and qualified to do so.

Edit: Also, I don't want this to seem as if it is the only option. Of course anyone should be free to judge. I just also feel that this would help keep the judging balanced. After all, how can you expect a completely fair judgment based off of a 1-Star 9yr old who can't even spell most of the words on the text of cards? I just feel that adding more judges of higher levels/skills would keep the judging balanced.

^ Again, you're saying we should get rid of people that we don't deem worthy enough the right to vote.
When you make a 1 on 1, it's a completely public event, and as such, is open to public vote. People vote based on their opinions. If a n00bs opinions are wrong, that sucks, but it doesn't take away the fact that it is still their opinion, and they have the right to present it.

Mind you, I was one of those noobs ;)
So I speak these things from experience. Just because we're not good to start with doesn't mean we're stupid. ^_\\\

Of course, but at the moment they're not very good, so why should actual good cardmakers lose to the inexperienced?

I was there too :P

No (not happening- unless you can somehow remove the reasons I and Yankee state). All the reasons Yankee has stated and it creates a superiority atmosphere that is less about respect and more about who's better at what.

Easily solved. Everyone should and is encouraged to vote. However, not everyone is a very good judge. For example, I'm not the best when it comes to OCG. But I am very good at card balance. I think the problem is that people have misconstrued this to be that "I think that there should be a list of people to judge and no one else can". That isn't what this is about at all. This is about how can we improve the judges that already exist and add new people to judge so that people don't have to continuously beg for a month to get a vote or get a poor vote based off of just the picture (which happened to me tonight) or even to find a challenger. Although challenges are usually accepted pretty quickly. This is more of a brainstorming session everyone, no voting. I'm sorry I haven't made that clear, it was because I hadn't thought about people making this an all or nothing campaign. The goal here is to improve what is already there and add to it if possible. That is, was and shall be my reasoning for ever saying/responding to anything about a list. So, forget anything about a list.
