The Amazing Avian
What the hell, I hope Sony doesn't do this. The PSPgo was bad enough, I don't think people want to be playing Peace Walker while receiving texts on the same system.
fenrir
The only way Sony can make me spend my money on anything related to a PsP is by mentioning one word. Monster Hunter. But on a more serious note, this is stupid. I mean, unless they actually bother to keep up their end on the 'you'll be able to change your UMDs to play them on this', this will probably fail. Catterjune
So basically, everyone who bought the previous PSP (and bought UMDs, or legally bought games from the PSN store and legally put them on their USB stick) got royal shafted by the PSPhone and it's utter lack of backwards compatibility? Phantom Roxas
Changing this topic to also talk about the PSP2, with another link for that system. So now it's a good thing that the PSP2 is dropping the UMD slot?

The UMD is dated technology; I would consider the memory sticks a better choice.
Phantom Roxas
True, the DSi didn't need the GBA slot by that point. If the memory sticks are fine and I don't need the UMDs for my games, then I'll be satisfied.
The Amazing Avian
I think that using memory sticks for games works better, but I prefer the UMD because they don't eat up a whole gig of memory.

I mean that it would be a bit tough to play a game while you're getting texts and calls on the same system.
Phantom Roxas
Well, they could probably just have the system pause the game while you get your call.
Actually that would be brilliant for on the go RPG Players. Since it would also have an ability to freeze the game (albeit draining more battery-life doing so) and allow you to pick up the scene at a later time. Effectively making there mini-save states. TAG
Not to be a stick in the mud, but if the rumors about the PSP2's capabilities are true, the price for the system will be horrifying.
jecobroy7
The authenticity of these photos from Engadget are being questioned in some quarters, but I doubt that they are false, since the sources are usually in the Engadget site when it comes to be months before a launch of new hardware. The idea of a possible new Android phone with slide controls Pan 3.0 out Play Station is obviously tempting, but what about the PSP2? I am still not convinced that there are two separate devices - as the market for Sony at a time? Or just out of Sony Ericsson to manage this new device, while the Sony PlayStation division focused solely on the PSP2.
Phantom Roxas
Between the PSP2 and the PSPhone, I'm leaning more towards the PSPhone. I might as well get a phone upgrade anyway, and I need something on the PSP2 to wow me or be a game I really want that would convince me to get one. Phantom Roxas
Kotaku has a vague picture of the developer's kit of the PSP2. http://kotaku.com/5692606/rumor-first-pics-of-the-psp2?skyline=true&s=i Keep in mind that it's very likely that this will not be the final product, but it at least gives us an idea of what kind of look Sony is going for. Hopefully the reports about it lacking the UMD slot turn out to be false. This isn't like the DSi, since we really need the UMD slot to come back if Sony expects us to buy it.
Yes, I was pissed when I found out the DSi didn't have a GBA slot, I won't even buy the thing if it doesn't have a UMD slot, mostly because I already have a few physical PSP games and I'm not upgrading to a system where they'll be obsolete.
Phantom Roxas
While the DSi lacked a GBA slot, you could still use physical games you already had for the DS with it. Games like Birth by Sleep aren't downloadable yet, and no one wants to pay even more money for a game they already, unless it's something like the Virtual Console or PS1 Classics. Didn't Sony learn how unpopular the PSPgo was? The DSi and the PSPgo were just iterations of the console, but this is a completely new console meant to follow up on the original PSP, and it should be designed as such. The Amazing Avian
Yes, you had physical media for the DSi, but the lack of the GBA slot is what got me, besides, the main reason the DSi sold was because of the camera. I have a phone with a camera and web capabilities and a DS Lite, so basically have a two part DSi with a GBA. now on the PSP2, lack of physical media on the PSPgo is what doomed it from the start, without a UMD slot, owners of the older PSP models won't likely buy the PSP2. I do think that the two stick thing would be a good addition to the PSP and would make it more suited for shooting games.
Toffee.
Lol@Nekoyashacomic Quick, someone find an image of that SNL skit in which Jimmy Fallen has a cell phone glued to a PS2. It would be so fitting for this topic.
