Maybe they just realized they sucked at making calendars or because they were EXTERMINATED before they could make more? There are alot of reasons why the calendar ends. Maybe they ran out of special rock. Maybe they found a different hobby. Maybe the guy who knew how to make them died abruptly and nobody knew how to make more. Or perhaps...

...they were trolls who wanted to f*** with the people who found their calendars and make them think the world was going to end?

Well one of the theories surrounding that calender, is that it's ending it's cycle. It has a begining, and an end. So far, we are currently about to approach it's end. But that is the part that allures many people. As they think it means the end of this period of humanity, or if it just means the end of the calender's cycle.

For once I can't be bothered to go through all of these posts so I don't know if this has already been said.

In response to the above quote and somebody who said Mayans thought the end of the cycle was a good thing, at that time something will destroy the sun, previously it has been (hurricanes or floods (Noah's Ark)) and everybody dies apart from one man and one woman (Noah's Ark) and they start the human race again.

So the Mayans do consider it the end for most of humanity.

I don't get why people are putting so much effort into discussing this if only like, 2 people get on the Debate section anymore.

It's just as easy as saying no, and explaining why not in a sentence, and leaving.

Example:

I do not believe the world will end in 2012 because the Mayans do not possess the technology to predict the end of the world. Morbid little kids flock to this just so they have a morbid reason to be morbid. nothing more.

You're obviously saying this because you're an atheist, and therefore have no morals and worship Satan.

So, there seems to be some confusion as to exactly what it means that the Mayan calendar "ends", so I'll explain. Calendar units have meaning associated with them. It takes 23 hours and 56 minutes for the Earth to rotate once - that's a day. It takes roughly 28 days for the moon to go through all of its phases - that's a month. It takes 365.25 days for the Earth to complete 1 rotation around the sun - that's 1 year.

Now, some ancient calendars used the additional Great Month and Great Year. The Earth has a very slight wobble in its orbit, causing the sun's apparent position to move through the signs of a zodiac in the reverse direction as the zodiac signs themselves process. It takes 2160 years for the sun to "pass" through one zodiac - one Great Month. It takes 25,920 years for the sun to return to a previous position - one Great Year. The Mayans divided the Great Year into five "suns" - each one-fifth of a Great Year in length. Each Sun was said to end in disaster. As it happens, we are now coming to the close of the Fifth Sun - so we are not merely ending a Sun, we're ending a full Great Year.

I suppose we should count ourselves lucky - living through the dawn of a new millennium is surprise enough - we're going to live through the commencement of a new Great Year. The last time people were present for that, they hadn't even invented the wheel. This is rarer than a solar eclipse! As a sort of trade, I suppose, I will probably never get to see an eclipse, which really would probably be much more interesting.

I believed the 5th had already ended, but that's an opinion, dates are so confusing ;_;

World will end at 31th December 2199, because Windows calendar ends there. But more seriously, world will end in 2012. Why? Because most people actually believe it (in Nexus XD) and they will start killing/stealing/etc. because they think that there will be no consequences for it. Seriously, just because Mayan calendar end there, it doesn't mean end of the world.

The thing is that people really don't believe it. It's the same as the people who are certain that Jesus is coming back tomorrow - for all their talk, they're still making long-term investments and setting aside money for retirement and their infant kids' college funds.

to answer your question its yes it will end by my hands *insert evil laugh*

OT.
Imo I don't don't think it's going to end but I do thinks that it's going to change in a big way (Ex: first alien contact, a polar shift, ect). But it just ending is just kinda hard to believe. Another thing i've been thinking is what if the Mayan Calendar is just a part of an Galactic calendar?

The world won't end....yet. All the hype this concept is recieving is all false. If you think about it, scientists and other thinkers are always saying that a world is going to end in the year 2000 because of some virus that will crash all computers in the world. Then they said it was going to end on June 6th 2006 (6/6/06/) because the date is the devil's number. Now their saying that the world will end because the Mayan Calander will end. I agree with Dr. Cakey. The end of the Mayan Calander means the end of the "Great Year" and nothing more.
