The method I use, is first as Liam said, Duplicate layer. Well, let me just spell it out:

Thing you want glowed: Layer > Duplicate layer,

On bottom layer Layer > Transparency > Alpha to Selection

On that selected bottom layer, choose a color you want the glow to be and color that layer: Bucket Fill > Fill Whole Selection > *Click* (Or, just use a brush)

Then on the bottom layer: Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur > 10-15 or whatever.

Filters > Alpha to Logo > Alien Glow.

It'll create a weird black+white copy of the render, so delete that and move the glow behind.

Usually on a 284x288 image, aim for about 20-30px or so on the glow effect.

I tried to do it but all the Alpha to Logo options were disabled (unclickable grey letters). That happened both while having and not having selected the area I want to glow... What am I doing wrong??

You need to select the layer to apply glow (duplicate it because it will turn the selected layer black+white)

Sorry, but I am a gimp rookie still, so can you tell me exactly what to do once I've opened teh picture I want (file>open)?
If you help me to do this, I will give you 2 reps...

Paste in a test render or the thing you want to glow (just so you can work it out, doesn't have to be real thing, needs to be an image with no background, you could even use a Cirlce brush and just dot the Layer)

Duplicate that layer so you have 2.

On the first layered image (original not dupe) select Filter > Alpha to logo > Alien Glow.

Choose colour and about 20px (you can change this by pressing Ctrl+Z Then redoing it)

Look in the layers at the side, I think you would have about 5 now, (if you only had those 2) and find the weird black+white one ,delete that and move (if you have to) the glow behind the image etc.

Really easy process, should work if you just open a new document with transparent BG, and draw a random shape with a brush.
