Yu-Gi-Oh!

Ultimate Tournament

-1-

The dark alleyway was the perfect place for Brad Johnson to think. Everything that he needed to ensure he could think properly was right there in the darkness. It was kind of like a sanctuary to him – peaceful, quiet, and most of all, dark.

Brad couldn’t stand bright lights. It had been that way since he was born. He cried and cried, looking up into the light of the maternity ward, and didn’t stop until later that day when the light was finally extinguished.

Brad shuffled his deck idly, but although he seemed to be daydreaming, he was deep in thought. He had almost finished setting up the prizes for the Ultimate Tournament, which he hoped would inveigle his archrival, Serre Nox, into entering. You see, although Serre was a good man who wouldn’t dream of causing anyone harm, he had one flaw, and that was greed. The grand prize of $1000 and the coveted Swordsman Eagle card was sure to entice him.

Brad smiled, a rare occurrence in his life. This was perfect. Nothing could go wrong. Because although Serre had never lost a single duel, Brad had the card that would stop him dead in his tracks…

“Take this!” shouted Serre, as he dealt out the final blow with his Dark Death Dragon card. With 2700 Attack points and 2400 Defence points, it was one of his best cards.

Once again, Serre’s deck had won. It was no surprise. Serre had spent hour upon hour improving his deck, thinking of all the possible ways it could lose, and altering it to make defeat virtually impossible. He had never lost a single duel or a single life point. He had even duelled with Maximillion Pegasus, Seto Kaiba and Yugi Moto, three of the best duelists in history. He had triumphed over them all.

Some people called it the luck of the draw, some people called it the heart of the cards, but whatever it was, Serre had it. He seemed to always save himself in any situation. Of course, a ‘situation’ to Serre was the possibility of losing a life point. If Serre even lost one point, it would erase him from the record books. After all, what was so interesting about someone who always won, but only just?

There was a lot of debate about Serre’s duelling style. Many people believed that Serre was a cheater, a liar and a worthless duellist. Serre ignored those people. He knew that he was duelling legally, and he had the hours of training to prove it. People who didn’t believe him weren’t worth knowing.
