The Video Game Card Tournament! *Lock please*

Hey there :)

Before I announce the results for this round, I had a bit of time and wanted to try myself:

I guess it turned out okay. But that doesn't matter :P Here we go (again in random order):

Frozenblade (Still Alive, Portal) vs. Gorbor25 (Sanctuary, Kingdom Hearts)

Alright, we have two very famous tunes right there. Let's start with Sanctuary, Kingdom Hearts 2's opening. It's starts out light-hearted, with a slow pace, full of memories and hope for the future. Later it picks up the pace a bit and gets into a more rocky tune, but that doesn't hold up too long. Memories are key here. When this song is played, we get a revision of the first Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. We have good and bad memories shown in this opening, represented by the song as well. The name of the card contributes to that very well, you could talk about good old times with this song, sometimes rough, sometimes nice. This of course, strengthens the people around you. But I, personally wished for a bit more. To interact with the past (Graveyard), a bit about hope for the future (Deck), maybe something more character specific. Sanctuary was a difficult choice, because it's long and there's a lot related with it. The picture fits it nicely, though there is writing in it at the corner, and the effect is a bit bland, as is the rest of the card (no details).

On the other hand we the relatively new, but nontheless classic song by GlaDOS, Still Alive. She sings about how you „killed“ her and that she isn't mad at you at all. She sings about cake and about science, what lies in the future, and that she'll be there, and you... probably not. The first part of the effect could refer to the test situation she put Chell (Protagonist of Portal) in when you start the game. For my idea though, the overall effect is too destructive. Yeah, you revive Machine-Type monsters, but basically, that's what GlaDOS does in Portal 2, and they're made for an eternity, not for just 1 turn. Also the song is a rather sad one, and to be honest, you didn't contribute to that at all. But the overall effect is nice, and since it also makes sense in the context of the game (here referring to YGO), it has a good balance between what could've been done for the song and what was done for the game.

Therefor, Frozenblade takes the win in this round. Congratulations, you're in round 3!

Serenity (Revived Power, Shadow of the Colossus) vs. rochster (Green Greens, Kirby's Dream Land)

Green Greens is the starting area of the first Kirby's Dream Land, an area where you learn about the sucking mechanics (god, that sounds awful), the enemies and the controls. It's an upbeat, friendly song, that introduces you to the world and it's characters. On the highnote, it get's a little intense, but that's about it. The Tokens are a nice idea to bring in, but, yeah, they are too violent for this song (yes, apples are violent). Maybe something with summoning a low level monster (first level of the game) or a slight ATK/DEF boost for the newbies. However, if you would've referred to the Super Smash Brothers Stage with this card, you could've made a lot of points right there because of the violence. The picture is alright, but it's the wrong game after all, and the name is not very creative. The effect itself is pretty good though, making a Field Spell was apt and overall, it's not a bad card.

The other tune goes into the epic department of this contest. If you want to describe this game in just one word, it would've been epic. The effect contributes to that by having a lot of impact on the game. You can turn the tides with it, as you did by revealing the weak spots on the colossus, making it vulnerable and therefor beatable. Maybe reviving many monsters isn't the best idea, you're on your own, it's you vs. those huge piles of massive stone. The song gets really intense at times, but I don't see any battle involved in the card itself. It has a hopeful tune, which, again, shows that you might have a chance after all, and that's pointed out quite well via the cards effect. The picture is really nice, showing of the scale of the game and the difference between you and those huge colossus.

Therefor, Serenity takes the win in this round. Congratulations, you're in round 3!

king of dyspraxia (Trainer Battle, Pokémon Red/Blue) vs. chedbonlahor (Oath to Order, The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask)

We begin with the Trainer Battle, an intense theme that shows a lot of fighting spirits (yeah, even for a Gameboy game). Fast paced and sometimes rough, exactly as the fights themself. By introducing it in the Battle Phase, you have covered that up. It's all about battling, tactics and the right monsters to choose. In this case, you did everything just right with your card. On the other hand however, there's a lot to do. Please, proofread it before you send me the card. The picture is taken directly from the game, and that's, in this case, a bad thing. Pokémon didn't look very good back then, it doesn't look very good till now. There's text in it, it's mostly black and white... not very appealing. The effect itself is alright, but hard to understand because of the spelling errors and the wrong or non-existand puctuation. You have potential, but you're lacking some of the real basics.

The other card: Majora's Mask is an epic game, and the name of your card is as well. The tune is a rather slow and steady one, with fear and hope involved. There's no real highnote in this one, but it doesn't really need it either. In the context of the game, it's literally the last call for hope. And you get a respond. You need to be desperate to use this song in this exact situation, and same goes for the card. What you get out of it is a total wipe, and there's where my critic starts: I didn't play the game, but after seeing the scene, there isn't much of a „wipe out“ going on after the giants are summoned. I would've gone with a summoning or reviving effect after tributing the cards. You triumph after all, but this song isn't played in the final battle (if I'm correct) but before that, it builds up to it, so you should try „build up“ the hero. But that are just minor complains: The overall card is great.

Therefor, chedbonlahor takes the win in this round. Congratulations, you're in round 3!

DHeroDogma (Sand Canyon 1, Kirby's Dream Land 3) vs. mammoth (Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious: Tokio Drift)

Easy decision for once: The Sand Canyon shows a lot of creativity, not only in the effect itself, but also in the translation from the game to the card. The song is catchy and upbeat, and the effect catches that by changing the rules to a more soft-hearted way. You have some kind of „crumple zone“ between you and the inavoidable destruction. The returning from graveyard is nice and fits the theme. A very good card overall, and a very fitting card as well. On the other hand, we have Tokyo Drift. I can't still accept that this is original, but oh well, let's get onto it. Next to no punctuation, the grammar is a mess, a picture that says nothing at all and an effect that is, in itself, pretty interesting, but has nothing to do with the game, at least as far as I can see it.

Therefor, DHeroDogma takes the win in this round. Congratulations, you're in round 3!

And that's it. For all those who did it: Great, cake awaits you. For all those who didn't: Too bad, but cake awaits you anyway.

The pairing for the third round:

Frozenblade vs. DHeroDogma

Serenity vs. chedbonlahor

Edited the trees (yeah, hell I don't know how to call it) in the first post.

The task will be posted in about 24 hours. Take a rest and... maybe think about your choice of character for the next round. I'll say that much: You'll need a minor one.

So long,

Spoon

PS: If you want to complain about the results... do it, but do it quietly ;)

Alright, I hope you relaxed, now it's time for buisness!

Your Task for Round 3

For those who made it this far: Congratulations! You are either really lucky or very skilled... pick your poison ;) For the third round I'll provide you with another horrible task. We now know that you can come up with good Effect Monsters and Trap/Spell Cards alike. But what about cards without an effect? That's right, I'm talking about „Vanillas“, those cute little cards that don't seem to serve much purpose. You will have to create 2 cards for this round: Number 1 is a „Vanilla“ based on a minor character in a game, that you think should get more attention. Number 2 is a card that supports the first. Some additional information, as always:

- The first card must be a Normal Monster Card without an effect. No Fusions, Synchros or Rituals!

- The second card can be anything: an Effect Monster, an Equip Spell, a Trap or whatever you can come up with. The only cards not allowed are Ritual Spell Cards and other „Vanillas“. It must mention the name, the type, the attribute or anything that is related to the first card in it's description, so it's clear that this card supports the other one.

- The first card must be a minor character. If you're unsure about your character being a minor one, PM me your idea first. Minor characters are most of the time not playable, but are at least noticable.

- Still 48 hours.

- The losers of this round will battle each other for the 3rd place, so please stay tuned. They'll get another task than the participants of the Grande Finale and can still win a formidable prize (and cake).

- This time, the focus lies on the lore of a card. Since there is no effect, you can only be creative with the picture and name you choose and the lore you provide for your card. Wikipedia is nice and colorful, but please, don't try to cheat and just copy a description from there! I won't control that because I trust you that far. Be creative with the description, maybe alternate it a bit, let it sound funny, intimidating or something, I don't know. The other point you can get is for creating a unique and creative support card... there I want you to go all out!

And that's it. I hope you have fun with this task, and I can't wait to see the results ;) Oh, and I raised the point prizes a bit... because I like ya a lot :D

So long,

Spoon

I'm sorry to inform you, but the Master Chief is no minor character. He is the main protagonist...

Haha yes lol I just realised, i'm already working on another card. Sorry!!!

**I REMOVED MY LAST SUBMISSION (AGAIN LOL) AND CHANGED IT***

Here is my submission, I decided to make my cards based around Epona, Link's steed. The support card indicates their teamwork and love for eachother:

217615.jpg

A majestic and wonderful steed, this powerful animal is the great hero's most noble and tusted friend. It is said that if you listen carefully you can still hear the faint trotting of its elegant hooves around Hyrule field.

217615.jpg

You can anly equip this card to "Epona Steed To The Hero". As long as you control a card with "Link" in its name, your opponent may not select "Epona Steed To The Hero" as an attack target. Once per turn during your Main Phase, you can discard 1 card from your hand to the Graveyard to destroy 1 Spell or Trap Card on your opponent's side of the field.

My turn! My turn!

Another entry for the fans

[spoiler=the weighted companion cube]

268739j.jpg

Lore: "The Enrichment Center reminds you that the Weighted Companion Cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak."

[spoiler=absolute measures]

268739.jpg

Lore: Destroy all "Weighted Companion Cube"(s) on the field. Then, Draw 1 card for each destroyed monster.

Hope it's good enough  .

Hm... This is alot harder than I thought

I don't play much Video Games, so thinking of a minor character is getting pretty difficult for me...

Well, you kinda got dropped into this... so if you need any advice, I can provide you with some character choices :) Only if you want of course. What games did you play?

Borderlands...

Ding, ding, ding! There are a lot of NPCs you could use, like T.K., Athena (Knoxx DLC), Dr. Ned, Tannis, or Marcus. Or Tekken... there you could go basically with every character that has not Mishima, Kazuya or Alexandersson in its name. Those stupid little things you always kill first from Halo (I didn't play that game, so I have no idea)... or why not just take Toad from Mario, everybody knows Toad :D

Just some examples, try something ;)

I've made a last-minute substitution, so i've changed my cards completely.

Well... I usually allow minor changes... not substituting a whole card... but alright, it's from the same game, and I can't start judging anyways since I don't have DHeroDogma's card.

As a reminder: 6 hours remaining, judging will come in later this time.

Up until now, there's no card from DHeroDogma and 48 hours have elapsed. Therefor, Frozenblade reaches the finals. Congratulations.

I'll edit the other winner in this post, I'll now start judging it, should only take 10 minutes.

Edit: Decision canceled!

I'll announce the last tasks in 24 hours. Our heroes may rest now, the last one won't be easier ;)

Edit:

Serenity (Metroids, Metroid) vs. chedbonlahor (Epona, Zelda)

Let me say this straight: all 4 cards are really good and would deserve to reach the finals. Sadly, I have to decide. The support cards are equally strong, and on their own, I don't prefer one over the other. What makes the difference is the Vanilla. Ched tried the „epic“ way, Epona as a trusted companion and friend to Link, and maybe something like a mystic creature with that last sentence. This is great... but it was also predictable. Serenity on the other hand tried something completely different: Humour and sarcasm. A great way to get attention, and in this case with success. But not only that, the support card fits this humouristic tone, and that's a great plus.

It was a tough decision, but by making me laugh, Serenity won this round. Congratulations, you're in the finals.

I don't understand, Where is the sarcasm and humour in his card, i must have missed it. It just seems like a generic lore to me. This is what Serenity wrote:

"Harmless, jelly-like creatures capable of siphoning an undetectable life energy from any life form. They are instead used to re energise Samus as she continues to save mankind."

-"harmless jelly-like creatures" - This is the only thing that could be considered as humerous because of the jelly-like.

-"capable of siphoning an undetectable life energy from any life form" - This is a serious description, where is the humour or sarcasm?? also life-energy and life-form both need a hyphon. He also spelt Siphon wrong its "syphon.

-"They are instead used to re energise samus" - again no humour of sarcasm, its simply a generic description. Re-energuse also needs a hyphon.

-"as she continues to save mankind" - again no humour or sarcasm.

:( I am truly stumped as to you arrived at your result and i am ever more perpelxed at how you found this humerous and sarcastic. The only thing I can think of is the fact you thought that in his description he was lying and making up what the metroids do. However that is exactly what they do, in the game the syphon energy and restore samus's health, so i cant find any humour. What I am also upset about is the fact that it is riddled with spelling mistakes, which he would have spotted if he took more care on his card. I spent a long time on mine making sure it was good.

You say that he won because of the humour and sarcasm however there was none as his description was 100% accurate.

I also feel that this was unfair because of his bad spelling.

I loved this comp and I wanted to win it, i feel that I have been kicked out at the semi-final stage unfairly, I am quite upest :(
