@Faun: Alright, saw it.

 

@Robo Warrior: At least we can see it now :) That would be Mario vs. Mario... well that's at least easier to judge, but not what I was aiming for... oh well, let's see which plumber has more mushrooms... or something like that :D

 

@mammoth: Yep, no hard feelings *hug*

 

Edit: Now the only card that's missing is the one from yessoan... I guess I'll PM him to remind him about it...

Alright, here we go, the deadline is reached, the results for round 1 (faster than expected, huh? :P):

 

 

Gorbor25 (Sora, Kingdom Hearts) vs. yessoan (nothing)

 

Gorbor wins by default, because yessoan didn't turn in his card and did not respond to my PM. Congratulations Gorbor, you're in round 2!

 

Now for the harder decisions :D Remember: this is my point of view. You can discuss with me, but please stay polite. I won't change my choice though, I can only admit a mistake. Since I made the decisions in the order the cards came in (yeah, I prepared them even though you still had time, if you made any changes and I noticed them, I, of course, included them in this little review), you may have to search a bit for your pairing.

 

Well then, here we goooooo!

 

 

abethedemon (Ryu, Street Fighter) vs. Serenity (Simon Belmont, Castlevania)

 

A hard one: Both have a really nice pictures which add to the atmosphere, while the effect isn't very creative. Both already existed in one or the other way. They're balanced as far as I can see it. What makes the point in the end are minor things. Simon Belmont is the Vanquisher of all things evil and zombie-ish. I can clearly see that from looking at that cards effect. Ryu on the other hand... I can't see his Hadouken having anything to do with destroying Spells and/or Traps. Another thing in Serenity's favor: He added details like "Castlevania Edition" and "VGS-EN002", which add up to the overall flavor of the card.

 

Therefor, I'm sorry abe, but this rounds winner is: Serenity with Simon Belmont, from the Castlevania series. Congratulations, you're in round 2!

 

 

rochster (Kirby, various) vs. merlinrocks11 (Batman, Batman: Arkham Asylum)

 

Another really hard decision. Kirby can turn your opponents card into Union monsters, which not only fits him very well, but is a neat idea. Since it's the „SSBB Edition“, it makes sense to make him a Warrior-Type, but nontheless, Kirby isn't only a fighting fluffy ball. He's a kind guy and should be treated that way... he's not that great of a fighter, which you contributed to by lowering his initial ATK, but not in his effect itself. The picture is generic, his typical SSBB picture.

Batman on the other hand has a very nice action-picture, but it could have been more focussed. His effect is okay, but I don't think it fits the Dark Knight very well. He would never betray his comrads and leech them out like water ice. Also I'm missing his various gadgets in this effect, like the Batarang (it's even shown in the picture, you could've done a Stun-like effect with that), which he heavily relies on when he's fighting bad guys.

Even though Batman is the way more original choice, the translation wasn't made very well. Kirby's conversion is traditional, but solid.

 

Therefor, I'm sorry merlin, I really liked your choice of character, but this rounds winner is: rochster with Kirby, from Kirby's Dream Land, Super Smash Brothers and more. Congratulations, you're in round 2!

 

 

king of dyspraxia (Yosuke Hanamura, Persona 4) vs. Mako109 (Samus Aran, Metroid)

 

This wasn't that hard for once. Sorry Mako, but this Samus just doesn't make any sense to me. The effect is just... it could very well also be non existant, because 400 DEF is nothing. Nothing is creative about it, and the card is heavily, heavily underpowered for its level. The picture is okay, but I would've expected more.

Yosuke on the other hand isn't very creative as well, but the effect is at least useful. Though the picture is just... no. It should be widely known by now that writing on a picture is a no-go. But it's still the better card from those 2.

 

Therefor, this rounds winner is: king of dyspraxia with Yosuke Hanamura from Persona 4. Congratulations, you're in round 2!

 

 

Faun (Robyn Hudson, Sims 2) vs. Frozenblade (Ryo Akiyama, Digimon Tamers)

 

Okay, this is another rather easy one. Faun, your card doesn't make sense. Maybe there's some major comprehension problem, but that's what I meant with „I don't care for OCG as long as it doesn't influent the comprehension of that cards effect“. In this case, it does. You place 1 counter on this card (THIS always refers to the card this phrase is printed upon) when it is attacked. Why should anybody attack this card 3 times and not succeed with destroying it? And then, when there are 3 counters on it, it even gives this card a drawback? It should benefit from from that effect... and if it does, I really don't get the point. I also don't get the point of Annoyance Counters on Sims... they are annyong sometimes, yeah, but then those counters should be placed on the opponents cards... or maybe not... I don't know. I like the picture, it's better than expected from a Sims-character, and I like that you tried to do something different, but that's about it. The idea is great, the execution... not so much.

I guess I don't need to discuss Frozenblade's card after that, it's solid, the effect is pretty good, gemini monsters are rare. Picture is... more meh than really good, but it's acceptable.

 

Therefor, this rounds winner is: Frozenblade with Ryo Akiyama from the Digimon Tamers Series. Congratulations, you're in round 2.

 

 

Lightning (Squall Leonhart, Final Fantasy VIII) vs. mammoth (Ghost Rider, Ghost Rider the Game)

 

Guys, guys, guys... where should I begin? Let's start with Lightnings Squall: Since Final Fantasy is my specialty, I know a bit about the characters. This guys name is Squall Leonhart! I just wanted to express that very clearly. His effect has nothing to do with his character, his abilities or his weapons. It's randomly chosen, as it seems. The picture is okay, he's a bit weak for his level and even if his effect would make sense, it's not very useful in any shape or form.

On the other hand we have the Ghost Rider, and I have to admit, this card is pretty good. Nice picture (though I would've prefered one where you can actually see his burning face) and a really nice and creative effect, with unique summoning conditions. That's what I wanted to see... but it hurts my eyes nontheless. I have to get harsh again, and I'm terribly sorry for it, but: USE PUNCTUATION!. What do we have this little dots and commas for? To eat them like cake? They serve a f****** PURPOSE!. After that's said, the card is still good.

 

Therefor, this rounds winner is: mammoth with his Ghost Rider interpretation. Congratulations, you're in round 2.

 

 

chedbonlahor (Kirby, stuff) vs. sirbobbert (Silver the Hedgehog, Sonic 2006 stuff)

 

Alright, two pretty good cards battling it out. Very promising fight for once, let's see who'll win it. Let's start with chedbonlahors Kirby. To say it straight: it's a very good Kirby. The effect is useful and fits him, even more than rochsters interpretation because it also inherits the effect of the „absorbed“ monster, and not the ATK and DEF values. It's pretty sad that he has no „own“ abilities, such as „cuddle the opponent till he can't attack“, but that's just my personal opinion :) The picture is really nice, makes him look cute and showcases his abilities, because it seems like his sucking (sounds stupid) right now. The only thing you could have improved would've been the OCG. Just a little hint for next time: a „non-effect Monster“ is just a „Normal Monster“.

Silver on the other hand is a pretty decent card by himself. The picture is cool, the effect is nice, though I wished for something more „autonomic“ if you know what I mean. Most of his effects depend on other, very special cards, and without knowing those, it's pretty hard to judge the overall effect. His first effect is okay and pretty much fits him (I saw the game in a Let's Play once) and showcases his abilities pretty nice, but in the end I wished for a more creative and self-explanatory effect.

 

Therefor, this rounds winner is: chedbonlahor with another Kirby. I really wanted to let you both pass, but since this is a K.O.-tournament, theres no room for such decisions :( Congratulations chedbonlahor, you're in round 2.

 

 

Robo Warrior (Mario) vs. NeosWiseman (Maweeeeeeoh)

 

Another easy one. For your first try Robo Warrior, this wasn't half bad. The picture is decent, the grammar okay, but after all, you can see where more effort was put into and where not. Neos' card is, as expected, good, but I miss the relation between the character and the effect itself. Maybe something with mushrooms and fireflowers would've been nice, but for now, it wins this round.

 

Therefor, this rounds winner is: NeosWiseman with Maweeeeeeeeeeeeeoh. Congratulations, you're in round 2.

For all of those who, in fact, made it: Congratulations once more! You're pretty good making it this far... but now we weill pick up the pace. This task was easy, the next one is going to be insanely hard. Trust me. You have 24 hours to relax. Then, I'll announce the task for round 2.

 

If you're not happy with one of my decisions, tell me about it. I can't change anything now, but I can admit a mistake and give a piece of cake for participating... which, of course, all will get after this contest is over ;)

You still get cake... but unfortunately after the tournament is over... and sorry to say it, but you're out. It was one of the closer battles though, as you can see in my "review"... sort of.

They just never do what you want. Everytime you want them to do something useful they're much too tired, too hungry, too annoyed. That's it.

Yeah, you had by far the strongest opponent. You did well for your first time, but you had no real chance to begin with :(

I doubt there will be one in the near future. After this one is finished, I already have another idea for a contest in mind. And since I can only make 1 contest at a time, this has to wait :(

I have to make an announcement before we start this round: NeosWiseman unfortunately has to leave the tournament. DHeroDogma will take over from here. If anybody has complaints about that... keep them ;)
