The Video Game Card Tournament! *Lock please*

Recommended Posts

Hello there, fellow Card Makers,

I'm your host, Spoon, and I'll accompany you in this tournament. This is my first contest, so if I did anything wrong, feel free to inform me about it. I want to keep it short, so here we go:
Setup!]

You'll be making cards from video games. What cards exactly, that'll be decided once we're enough to get this thing started. Since I want to keep this contest as accessable as possible, everybody can join and there won't be an entry fee, only lots and lots of prizes ;) As I already mentioned, it'll be a tournament-style contest, meaning I'll pair you up once we've reached a certain number of contestants (random.org ftw!), and your cards will battle it out, 1 on 1, until the Grande Finale, where we'll name the greatest Video Game Card Maker on YCM... or something like that
What am I looking for?]

Since the only judge of this contest will be me (unless somebody begs me to become a judge... but I guess nobody will, because all you'll get is cake), I'll make the decisions on who stays and who leaves. Period. And the way I judge may be a little different from what you're used to: I don't have a certain scale I lay on, I just decide. Of course I'll give a detailed reason for my decision. Some things that won't be considered in my ratings: OCG. Unless it really affects the comprehension of that cards effect, I don't care for it. I don't care if you capitalize Special Summon and I don't care if you type "Piercing damage" or the whole friggin term. Also not part of the rating are additional alterations of the cards such as customized templates or bright and shiny effects. That would be unfair to those who aren't as skilled in the use of Photoshop or whatever, and it's not what makes a great card great.

What I will rate, heavily, is originality. Screw the rules as much as you want, use fake types (if they fit in), do whatever is necessary to make the card stand out. Since this is a Pop Culture contest, I'll also rate how much the card fits the actual characters they belong to. I know a lot of games, so this will be a doable thing... if you're not using underground Danmaku shooters, it'll be fine. More on that topic in the rules. And even if I said I won't care for OCG, grammar itself is an important topic. I won't give you a bad rating because you misspelled "courageously", hell I'm not a native speaker myself, but please try to take care of the words... because words can hurt if used wrong.
The Rules!]

- All YCM rules apply

- No Spamming, Flaming and so on... you know the deal.

- 8 or 16 contestants (Since we're already more than 8, we'll go for the 16!).

- K.O. system. The winner of one round will get to the next, the loser will be out (except for the match for the 3rd place).

- Every card must be from a commonly known video game. No japanese underground danmaku shooters (that includes Touhou... I can't really respect those as games). The exact specifications for the cards will be posted when the round begins.

- Cards that were already posted on this site (for a contest, in a set or whatever) are not allowed.

- I have the last word (or a mod if necessary). You can talk to me if some decision doesn't suit you, but be polite.

- Once a round starts, you have 48 hours to turn the card in. If you should fail to do so, your opponent wins by default.

- At the end, there will be cake.
The Prizes!]

1st Place: 3 Reps + 400 Points

2nd Place: 2 Reps + 200 Points

3rd Place: 1 Rep + 100 Points

Everyone: Cake!
Every game needs a hero. You can't save the world without one after all. So your first task is to take a game of your choice and create a card for one of the main protagonists. Some things that I should mention:

- The Card has to an Effect Monster Card. No Synchros, Fusions or Rituals! No "Vanillas" (Cards without an effect) or written cards (Cards without a picture).

- Please give me the exact name of the game you're choosing your card from, in case I have to look something up.

- The game and protagonist you're choosing now does NOT need to be your choice for the second round as well, you're free to switch games as much as you like. However, if you want to choose the same, you can, of course, do so.

- It would be nice if the 2 competing with each other would not choose the same game/protagonist. It's not necessary though.

- I repeat: You have 48 hours to turn your card in. If you should fail to do so, your opponent wins by default. If all cards should be in before that time limit, we'll still wait for the 48 hours to elapse. You can still do minor changes to your card within that limit, but please do not abuse this possibility.

- Your card doesn't necessary have to be THE main protagonist of the game. It can also be any major AND controllable character in that game.
After warming up and seperating the wheat from the chaff, we're now heading for round 2. The first task was easy and predictable, I can guarantee you, that this one is not. If the graphics of a game symbolize it's outer beauty, and if the gameplay symbolizes the physical strength of a game, the Soundtrack is its very soul. Your task is to create a Spell or Trap Card based of a track of a video game soundtrack. Some additional things for this task:

- Please provide me not only with the name of the track and the game, but also with a Youtube link (or any other source where I can listen to it) to said song. If possible, also tell me when this track is played in the game.

- The card can be any kind of Spell or Trap Cards except Ritual Spell Cards.

- The Song must be an original track for that video game (or that series). The song can be of any kind, with singing or without, a character theme, a battle theme, a stage theme or full fledged song written only for this game.

- Pay attention to the song itself. Because I will too. I'll rate how well the card fits not only the situation it is played in, but also if it fits the tune itself. I know that this is highly a matter of opinion, but when you signed up for this, you knew that. I'll, of course, also rate the creativity of the effect, but not as much as I did with the hero cards.

- Remember: You don't need to choose the same game you chose in round 1 for your protagonist. However, you can do so if you want to.

- And remember once more: You have 48 hours to turn the card in. It will get more difficult ;)

"I guess I want to add just one thing: You can, of course, provide additional info material with your cards and what you've thought of when you created them. It actually really helps me :) It's not necessary, and it doesn't need to be that long, but if you have the time and think your card is not self-explanatory (especially if you haven't played the game, like it's the case for me with Majora's Mask), it definitely wouldn't hurt :)" - from post #112
For those who made it this far: Congratulations! You are either really lucky or very skilled... pick your poison ;) For the third round I'll provide you with another horrible task. We now know that you can come up with good Effect Monsters and Trap/Spell Cards alike. But what about cards without an effect? That's right, I'm talking about „Vanillas“, those cute little cards that don't seem to serve much purpose. You will have to create 2 cards for this round: Number 1 is a „Vanilla“ based on a minor character in a game, that you think should get more attention. Number 2 is a card that supports the first. Some additional information, as always:

- The first card must be a Normal Monster Card without an effect. No Fusions, Synchros or Rituals!

- The second card can be anything: an Effect Monster, an Equip Spell, a Trap or whatever you can come up with. The only cards not allowed are Ritual Spell Cards and other „Vanillas“. It must mention the name, the type, the attribute or anything that is related to the first card in it's description, so it's clear that this card supports the other one.

- The first card must be a minor character. If you're unsure about your character being a minor one, PM me your idea first. Minor characters are most of the time not playable, but are at least noticable.

- Still 48 hours.

- The losers of this round will battle each other for the 3rd place, so please stay tuned. They'll get another task than the participants of the Grande Finale and can still win a formidable prize (and cake).

- This time, the focus lies on the lore of a card. Since there is no effect, you can only be creative with the picture and name you choose and the lore you provide for your card. Wikipedia is nice and colorful, but please, don't try to cheat and just copy a description from there! I won't control that because I trust you that far. Be creative with the description, maybe alternate it a bit, let it sound funny, intimidating or something, I don't know. The other point you can get is for creating a unique and creative support card... there I want you to go all out!
For those who came in late: Those 2 are the greatest Video Game Card Makers on YCM. They made it this far, and they won't give up now. Just like real heroes. This is the final decision. Who claims the crown, and who falls deep? However...

At the end of each journey, at the end of each heart-breaking path, their lurks evil. Show me this Evil!

Make a Monster Card for the main villain of a video game. No movie adaptations or such crap, just pure video game devilishness!

This Monster Card can be anything, as long as it's a monster. If it requires a certain card to be summoned (Ritual Spell Card, Fusion or Synchro Materials), post those as well!

Still 48 hours to complete your task. If both cards are ready earlier and both players agree, I'll start judging earlier as well.

Bring it!

You, of course, are all accepted. We already have 7 contestants, let's see if we can get 16 till tomorrow :)

can i post my card now?

Nope, I state the specifications for each round when the round starts... not one tick earlier

You don't even know if I want a Spell, Trap or Monster Card, so you can't post it now ;)

Could i join.

Don't know, can you? If you're not, I don't know, dead, then I guess you can... though there is no rule that forbids the dead to participate... I should think about that

When are we starting this thing

We'll start when we have 16 participants (currently 13).

Eh, of course everyone who "applied" for this contest is accepted and listed ;) And as I can see we have a whole lot of new members in here as well, this could get rather interesting... let's see who's really talented and who could be an enrichment to the Pop Culture section :)

So long,
