I'd find this tolerable in a slower, more thought-out game in which every LP counted and games were drawn out.

Really? So you wouldn't mind a format with a searchable Brain Control? IDK I don't think the fact that a slow format would be able to make this card any less bannable. The game would be slower and duels would be more drawn out, yes, Life Points would matter more, yes, but this is just an easy topdeck that can win you the game like Brain Control. Factor into the equation Arms Hole and you turn that into an easy topdeck that could win you the game too. Oh and don't forget about Synchros although I guess how you would deal with them would be something else to consider. Brionac, Stardust, Dark Strike Fighter, Goyo Guardian and possibly Black Rose Dragon I'd assume would be the least that are banned in that area.

I was thinking of a game with huge power cards such as this that were easily negated with preventive cards that in turn slowed the pace of the game. Yugioh will never become anything like that so my musings were little more than that. Back when the cards were random ass pulls and you had cards like Gate Guardian yet a card like Raigeki the game really had to potential to mold into anything. So while you can easily say now that banning this card is a no brainer, it's really because of what the game turned into after its creation.

Yeah, while we had a lot of broken stuff back then, it was difficult to actually capitalize on the advantage you gained because easy to summon beatsticks with 3000 ATK and whatnot didn't exist until the Invasion of Chaos which was a set that took brokeness to a new level. Before IOC, you didn't have to main Solemn because there was nothing worth paying half your Life Points to stop until that era. You can't stop Exodia with it so yeah, you didn't need to use it although when going for game, the multi-purpose negation was quite helpful at times since it costs you half your Life Points as opposed to Seven Tools of the Bandit which costs you a fixed 1000. If you have 900 Life Points and are going for game, which would've been the better one to use?
