Finally finished my Daichi & Lex vs. Thunder Spark duel... The challenge was making it interesting without resorting to broken cards to balance everything out.

[spoiler=The Finest Duelist? Part 1]

The fairground glowed in the afternoon sun, the many fairy lights slowly becoming more clear-cut as the solar light faded. However, from a nearby rooftop, none of that mattered to Daichi. His sight was focussed on one attraction beneath him. A glorious stand bathed in light under the stand ‘The Finest Duelist’. The energies pulsating from his Extra Deck told him that that duellist’s trump card was no ordinary monster. It was a ‘Number’, and an incredibly high one at that. It needed to be contained, and consumed. As the sun touched the horizon, he made his way to the stairs to descend.

Meanwhile, in the fairground itself, a second duellist was being drawn to the same stand. Lex continued to try to supress the voice in his mind urging him on, but as he came closer, the voice became louder. A similar energy emanated from his Extra Deck, alerting him to the ‘Number’. He made his way through the crowd to the stand itself. As he did, his attention was drawn to the far end, to a man dressed in a bizarre lightning-themed costume. With lightning and storm motives covering what appeared to be a bike-suit, he looked somewhat comical. A more mysterious sight was his eyes; completely blank, which most likely served to unnerve his opponents.

In front of him, another duellist was on his knees, clearly having just been given a total defeat. He struggled to his feet, and staggered off. Lex noticed he was bleeding, another sign of the devastating power of a ‘Number’. At that point, an announcer’s voice was heard over a loudspeaker.

“And another opponent has fallen at Thunder Spark’s hands!” The crowd cheered and applauded. “Can anyone here end this man, The Finest Duelist’s winning streak?! If so, step forward now!”

Lex stepped forward. Thunder Spark raised his hand, indicating him to stop. Lex, slightly surprised, looked around and saw a second duellist had accepted the challenge. He didn’t know him, but the energy surrounding his Extra Deck showed Lex he too was a ‘Number’ holder.

“Whoa! Hang on! Two hopefuls have both tried to challenge Thunder Spark! I think one will have to wait his turn!” The announcer seemed a little unsure as how to approach the situation. “So, who will be the-“ He was cut off by Thunder Spark once again raising his hand, looking over to Lex and the other duellist, and nodding. After a short pause, the voice returned. “He’s accepted both challenges at the same time! We have a two-on-one Royal Duel for you tonight folks! This should be incredible! Let’s start this!”

“Who are you?” Lex asked.

“I am Daichi. Our ‘Numbers’ have drawn us to this man, and to each other. He too knows what we hold, and that’s why he has accepted this duel. Any ‘Number’ holder can fall victim to the greed of their ‘Number’ to consume others. Hopefully, I will not have to use my ‘Numbers’ to defeat him. What about you?”

“I…don’t use my ‘Number’ anymore…”

“Good. If we can supress our own monsters, his ‘Number’ won’t attack with full ferocity, and that could give us the edge.”

“Duel!”

Turn 1

“For those of you who have just arrived, Thunder Spark does not talk during his duels. He acts out his grand design in silence, to make it perfect. I have the job of keeping you all up to speed with his duelling!” The announcer began. “And he draws! Oh, he’s opened by Summoning ‘Electrode Beast Cation’, whose effect Special Summons ‘Electrode Beast Anion’ from his Deck!” The lightning creature was quickly joined by a second, albeit alternately-coloured creature, which softly glowed. “When both ‘Electrode Beast’ monsters are on the field, Thunder Spark is allowed to draw an additional card!” Both monsters then formed into bright white streamers, flying into the sky. “He’s overlaying his two monsters! He’s Xyz Summoning ‘Paralysing Beast Semicon’!”

From the summoning vortex, a crack of lightning burst free, followed by the lion-like creature, loosing a synthetic roar. Two cannons were bolted to its back, one each aimed at Lex and Daichi. Thunder Spark reached down and removed both overlay units from beneath the card form of his monster.

“He’s activated ‘Semicon’s’ effect: By detaching an overlay unit, he can target a card in his opponent’s hand, and prevent his opponent from using it during their next turn! And…he’s chosen one from each of his opponents!” A pair of energy bolts lanced across the battlefield, striking Lex and Daichi. Both looked down at their hands to see the affected cards. ‘Phoenix Gearfried’…and ‘Gem-Knight Fusion’. Lex quietly cursed as he was forced to consider other opening moves.

“Of course, because this is the first turn of a Royale Duel, no player can attack, so Thunder Spark’s ending his turn by Setting one card face-down! Challengers! Now, show us what you can do!”

“Gladly.” Started Daichi. “I draw, and Normal Summon ‘Vulcan Princess’!” A blast of heat accompanied the monster’s appearance, the oversized weapon slamming into the ground. “Next, I activate the effect of ‘Phoenix Miko’ in my hand: by discarding her, my ‘Vulcan Princess’ gains her Gemini Effect! That effect now triggers: I reveal the top three cards of my Deck, and if there is an Equip Spell among them, I can add it to my hand! I reveal…’Searing Shield’, ‘Supervise’, ‘Phoenix Sword Mage’. I choose to add ‘Searing Shield’, and equip it to ‘Vulcan Princess’, increasing her Defense by 400. (Vulcan Princess DEF: 800 -> 1200) Since I cannot attack, I’ll Set one card and, end my turn.”

“I’ll draw then!” Announced Lex. Looking through his hand, he realised a fusion rush would have to wait until next turn. For this turn, he would try to use the biggest hitter his Main Deck could offer. “I Summon ‘Gem-Knight Alexandrite’, and activate its effect, Tributing it to Special Summon a ‘Gem-Knight’ Normal Monster from my Deck! I Special Summon ‘Gem-Knight Crystal’!” A rainbow mist flooded out of the ground, forming into the Summoned monster, who glinted in the golden light. “I end my turn with two cards face-down.”

[spoiler=The Finest Duelist? Part 2]

Turn 4

“In that case, it’s Thunder Spark’s turn once again, and now he’s free to attack! So brace yourselves challengers! He draws!” Thunder Spark swept his hand over his face-down card, and it activated. “That’s ‘Thunder Burst’! By destroying a Thunder-Type monster he controls and taking 500 damage, he inflicts 500 damage to his opponents for each Spell or Trap Card they control! Both the challengers have two Spells and/or Traps, so both will take 1000 damage from this!” The electrically-charged monster erupted into a sphere of energy, before lancing out in three directions, and striking all three duellists. (Thunder Spark LP: 4000 -> 3500) (Daichi LP: 4000 -> 3000) (Lex LP: 4000 -> 3000)

Thunder Spark revealed a card in his hand, before Summoning it.

“That’s ‘Otonari Thunder’, the key card of his Deck! Thunder Spark must be getting ready to show us his ultimate monster!” The bipedal monster sparked, and four golden silhouettes formed beside it. “He’s activated its effect, allowing him to Special Summon four ‘Thunder’ monsters from his Deck! And here come…’Oka Thunder’, ‘One Thunder’, ‘Oni Thunder’ and ‘Oto Thunder’!” The five monsters crackled with energy, before forming into streamers and vanishing into a galaxy-like Summoning vortex.

‘Five materials?!’ Thought Lex. ‘How destructive is this monster?’

From the black space rose the answer; a colossal, serpentine dragon, the ‘91’ on its body clear to see.

“And there it is! ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’! The finest duellist’s finest monster! Until now, no challenger has been able to stand up to it! It can’t be destroyed by battle, and it can wipe its opponent’s field clean! Our challengers will be lucky if they can survive more than one turn against this leviathan!”

‘So…they’ve kept people ignorant about the fact it is a ‘Number’, claiming that its inherent ability is just another effect. And, because it is a ‘Number’, holders are drawn to it.’ Daichi’s internal monologue continued. ‘They can hunt ‘Numbers’ in broad daylight and no-one is any the wiser, except the holders.’

Thunder Spark motioned with his hand, and his dragon’s materials became a sphere of electricity surrounding it.

“He has activated ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’s’ final effect! By detaching all five of its materials, it destroys everything his opponent-his opponents control!” The sphere erupted and consumed the battlefield, hurling Daichi and Lex away. When they picked themselves up, they saw the aftermath of the strike: there was nothing between them and the dragon, now readying an attack. Thunder Spark silently pointed at Lex, but was struck by a burst of flame from Daichi’s duel disk.

“When ‘Searing Shield’ is destroyed, my opponent loses 400 Life Points for it!” Explained Daichi. (Thunder Spark LP: 3500 -> 3100) Undeterred, Thunder Spark repeated his command, and the beast fired.

“I activate ‘Future’s Gambit’!” Declared Daichi, and a blue-white portal formed in front of him and Lex.

“How can he?!” Asked the announcer “His field is empty!”

“That may be, but ‘Future’s Gambit’ only works if it is destroyed while on the field! So, from my Graveyard, I use its effect! When my opponent attacks, I can discard a Spell or Trap, and ‘Future’s Gambit’ gains that effect as its own! I discard ‘Silent Doom’, which Special Summons ‘Phoenix Miko’ from my Graveyard to shield my ally!” A faint image of ‘Silent Doom’ appeared out of the portal, before Daichi’s monster was revived, and promptly destroyed by the blast.

“What an intelligent way to counter Thunder Spark’s strategy! This duel may not be over quite yet!” The announcer shouted, seemingly enthused at the prospect of an unpredictable duel. “Thunder Spark ends his turn by Setting three cards. Challengers go!”

“Why did you do that?” Asked Lex.

“Simple. Firstly, I need you to make this victory easier. And secondly, you hold a high-ranking ‘Number’, and there is no honour in using another enemy to weaken you enough to take it from you. I want our ‘Numbers’ to face each other directly, and see which is stronger.” Replied Daichi.

“I draw!” Daichi declared “I activate ‘Trade-In’, which by discarding a Level 8 monster, lets me draw two cards! I discard ‘Phoenix Gearfried’! Next, I activate the Spell ‘Phoenixian Feathers’! At a cost of 800 Life Points (Daichi LP: 3000 -> 2200), it revives a Gemini Monster from my Graveyard! Be reborn, ‘Phoenix Gearfried’!”A pair of halcyon wings parted to reveal the red-cloaked being, its weapons burning with incendiary energy. “Now, I Gemini Summon ‘Phoenix Gearfried’, unlocking his true effect!” Daichi’s monster was enveloped in a crimson aura as its power was unleashed. “’Phoenix Gearfried’; attack ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’!”

The knight leapt forward, bringing its sword to bear. Mid-swing, it was interrupted by Thunder Spark and the announcer.

“Thunder Spark activates ‘Dragon Booster’, a Trap that increases a Dragon-Type monster’s ATK by 500! ‘Phoenix Gearfried’ might be about to lose everything!”

“Not quite! I chain ‘Shrink’, a Quick-Play Spell that halves ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’s’ original ATK for the rest of this turn!” (Thunder Spark Dragon ATK: 2400 -> 1200 -> 1700) The sword came down, a trail of fire searing the air. Thunder Spark’s monster withstood it, but the heat wave forced him to take a step back. (Thunder Spark LP: 3100 -> 2000)

“Excellent duelling from the challenger!” Cried the announcer “Not only was he able to read Thunder Spark’s moves, but he’s brought his Life Points down to half!”

“That ends my turn!”

“This is becoming more and more like the challengers have the upper hand! Can our other hopeful continue this upward march?!”

“My turn!” Started Lex “And now that the card you paralysed last turn is free, I’ll use it! I activate ‘Gem-Knight Fusion’, using it to fuse ‘Gem-Knight Tourmaline’ and ‘Gem-Knight Sanyx’ together!

From Gaia’s bounty comes a new being! Shine through to victory! Fusion Summon! Terran light, Gem-Knight Prism Aura!

The monster was bathed in light as it descended, its crystalline spear refracting the rays into an eerie rainbow across the stands.

“And another monster with higher ATK than ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’! These challengers are going for broke!”

“I activate ‘Gem-Knight Fusion’s’ secondary effect! By banishing ‘Gem-Knight Tourmaline’ from my Graveyard, I return ‘Gem-Knight Fusion’ to my hand! Then, by sending ‘Gem-Knight Fusion’ back to the Graveyard, I can use it as fuel for ‘Prism Aura’s’ effect! An effect that destroys one face-up card on the field! I choose ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’!” Lex’s monster’s spear surged with light energy, and shot a glorious beam into Thunder Spark’s monster. The creature screeched briefly, before shattering.

“We haven’t seen this in a long time ladies and gentlemen! Thunder Spark is on the ropes! His best monster is gone, and if this attack goes through, it will be all over!”

“’Gem-Knight Prism Aura! Attack directly!” The monster charged, its spear building energy. Leaping up, it aimed and readied its lance. Thunder Spark simply swept his hand over one of his face-down cards. It activated, and revealed itself as ‘Xyz Reborn’.

“’Xyz Reborn’! What an incredible bluff by Thunder Spark! Drawing his opponents in to destroy ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’, only to have it come back at them!” The dragon rose from the ground, roaring as it faced its opponent.

“I continue my attack!” At that command, Lex’s monster drove its lance into ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’, the dragonic beast howling in pain. (Thunder Spark LP: 2000 -> 1950) “I’ll end my turn with one card face-down!”

“How can letting it get destroyed, then bringing it back with a revival card be a bluff?” Lex asked himself.

“Because ‘Xyz Reborn’ treats itself as an Xyz Material.” Replied Daichi. “Most likely, his Deck is focussed on quickly bringing out ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’, then once he’s used its effect, refuelling its cost to use it again. That move got him from zero to one Xyz Material, and it only cost him 50 Life Points.”

“Crap.”

“Indeed.”

[spoiler=The Finest Duelist? Part 3]

Turn 7

“It’s Thunder Spark’s turn! Can he regain the advantage?! Or is this the end of his winning streak?!” Thunder Spark quickly Summoned two monsters, and activated his last face-down card: ‘Judgment of Thunder’.

“’Judgment of Thunder’! It can only be used when you Summon a Thunder-Type monster, but it destroys any card on the field! What will he target?” With Thunder Spark pointing to ‘Gem-Knight Prism Aura’, a violent surge of lightning shot out of the Trap towards Lex’s monster.

“I activate ‘Phoenix Gearfried’s’ effect! When a monster is targeted by a card effect, I can send an Equip Card I control to the Graveyard to negate and destroy that effect! I send ‘Phoenixian Feathers’ to the Graveyard!”

The bolt of electricity was diverted away from Lex’s monster, and slammed into ‘Phoenix Gearfried’s’ shield, dissipating as it did. Daichi, Lex and the crowd then returned their attention to the two new monsters under Thunder Spark’s command.

“Those two are both ‘Lightning Bulker’! If you only control an Xyz Monster, you can Special Summon one from your hand. He’s Normal Summoned the other one.” At Thunder Spark’s gesture, the formed into small orbs, and began orbiting ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’. “Now you see ‘Lightning Bulker’s’ effect: If you have an Xyz Monster that was originally Xyz Summoned using Thunder-Type monsters, you can attach ‘Lightning Bulker’ to that monster. I think Thunder Spark is about to use ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’s’ second effect!”

Daichi and Lex braced themselves for another onslaught, but when it didn’t come, they looked over to Thunder Spark. He revealed, then activated a different card, ‘Cursed Bill’, equipping it to ‘Phoenix Gearfried’.

“This could be the turning point!” The announcer cried. “When the monster ‘Cursed Bill’ is equipped to is destroyed, its controller takes damage equal to that monster’s original DEF! ‘Phoenix Gearfried’s’ DEF and our challenger’s Life Points are equal! If this works, we’ll have lost a challenger, and the survivor will be all on his own!”

Again, Thunder Spark gestured, and the three Xyz Materials formed into a white sphere, consuming the battlefield. His monster was gone, but this time, Lex noticed his face-down card was still intact. However, he looked over to Daichi, expecting to see him without Life Points. Instead, he saw him protected by a deep red image of ‘Searing Shield’.

“’Searing Shield’ too has an additional effect.” Daichi started as the image faded. “When I would take effect damage, I can banish it in my Graveyard to negate that damage.”

“So they’ve managed to scrape through that! But, our challenger’s Life Points are still lower than ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’s’ ATK! And without any face-down cards, it could still be over!” At that, the dragon once again reared up and launched a ferocious bolt of lightning at Daichi.

“I activate ‘Lotus Invocation’! This Trap Special Summons a Normal Monster from my Banished Zone, but I can’t use it for a Summon during this turn! I Summon ‘Gem-Knight Tourmaline’ in Defense Position!” Like ‘Phoenix Miko’ before it, the newly Summoned monster was vaporised by the attack. Daichi looked at Lex with confusion.

“I don’t like having unpaid debts.” Lex responded bluntly.

“This is incredible! All three duellists are showing incredible skill and determination! Who will strike the killing blow!” The announcer continued, the excitement clear in his voice.

“My turn! And…I draw!” Daichi looked at his card, and smiled. “Lex, as much as it annoys me, it seems as though fate has determined you to finish this duel, but I will help you along. I activate ‘Soul of Fire’, which by skipping my Battle Phase and letting you draw one card, burns you for half the ATK of a Pyro-Type monster I banish from my Deck! I choose to banish my 2900 ATK ‘Phoenix Seraph’, meaning you take 1450 points of damage!” An orange vision of the monster appeared, and swept over the duelling ring, forcing Thunder Spark back. (Thunder Spark LP: 1950 -> 500) “That’s all I can do!”

“It’s my turn!” Lex also looked at his drawn card and smiled. “It looks like you were right, revealing the card. I activate ‘Dark Factory of Mass Production’, and with it I return ‘Gem-Knight Tourmaline’ and ‘Gem-Knight Crystal’ to my hand! Then, I can once again activate the second effect of ‘Gem-Knight Fusion’ by banishing ‘Gem-Knight Alexandrite’! Now, I use ‘Gem-Knight Fusion’ to fuse ‘Gem-Knight Crystal’ and ‘Gem-Knight Tourmaline’ together!”

From Gaia’s bounty comes her very embodiment! Smash through to victory! Fusion Summon! Terran earthquake, Gem-Knight Zirconia!

The gigantic rock warrior was equal in size to ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’, the two monsters now dwarfing all around them. “This will end it! ‘Gem-Knight Zirconia’! Attack ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’! Fissure Strike!”

The massive stone fist crashed down onto the dragon, crushing it. Thunder Spark was thrown backwards by the shock wave, being tossed around as he landed clumsily. (Thunder Spark LP: 500 -> 0) ‘Zirconia’ vanished as the duel systems deactivated.

“Ladies and gentlemen! We have witnessed something incredible here! For the first time since we started this, Thunder Spark has been defeated! I’d never thought I’d…” The announcer tailed off as he, like the crowd, saw that ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’ hadn’t faded along with the rest of the holograms.

It glared over to the two that had defeated it, and lunged. Cloaking itself in electrical energy, it flew straight at the duellists. Lex shielded himself and waited for the end. When it didn’t come however, he opened his eyes and saw a glowing ‘81’ on his right hand. Looking up, he saw both his ‘Number’, and another which he presumed to be ‘Daichi’s’ stopping ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’. Suddenly, the pair gained the advantage and tore the creature apart, the last of its energy depleted.

The two ‘Numbers’ slowly faded, and a card fluttered to the ground where ‘Thunder Spark Dragon’ had fallen. Daichi moved towards it and picked it up. Lex managed to notice that it was a blank, although Xyz-print card, before Daichi tore it in half. The two remnants simply dissolved into the air, leaving no trace of the card or the monster.

As the crowd sat motionless, and with the announcer silent, Daichi turned to Lex and said simply.

“When we duel, we will be forced to use the Decks that our ‘Numbers’ created. I hope for an interesting match. Until then…”

Cannot be Summoned except if there is a face-up "Staff of Divinity - Solaris" on the field. Each time the controller of this card would lose Life Points: They gain Life Points equal to the amount instead. If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can banish this card; Add 1 Equip Spell Card in your Graveyard to your hand.

I know I did this before, but I'd think I'd ask for help again.

You should make it so that "Solaris" only protects against either Battle or Effect Damage, since a Level 4 that can shield you against everything is pretty broken. And its Summoning Conditions don't offset it, since you'll be running two or three of "Staff of Divinity - Solaris" anyway. And it doesn't need that Equip Card to stay on the field. "Prime Material Dragon" is Level 6, and applies its effect to both players. Consider that.

As for the Equip Spell, I would say it has the potential to be a little overpowered (compare "Mask of Brutality"). OCG Fix is:

The equipped monster gains ATK equal to half its original ATK. During each of your Standby Phases: You lose 1000 Life Points.

@Max: Once again an excelent duel. First I thought it would mostly be a duel between Thunder Spark and Daichi, but you managed to give a good part in it aswell.

And I really hope Konami never ever releases "OToNaRiThunder". It's broken beond my imagination, I've seen people with no understanding of ballance make cards more ballanced then that. Just rediculous.

Thank you.

Well...they've just released "ESPer Star Robin"... So they can't really be trusted...

"ESPer Star Robin" wouldn't have been such a big deal, if they didn't boosted it's strenght. They litterally broke a slightly UP card. That's something only a few people can do.

They've probably got a new guy or two in the office, and they accidently left him alone with the DT14 card list.

Or they didn't fire the guy who made "Goyo Guardian" and left him alone with the DT14 card list.

Exactly. They've left someone who doesn't know what they're doing alone with the new cards.

EDIT: First new cards since new laptop and having to find all my old images again.

Effect: Cannot be Special Summoned except if you control a face-up Effect FIRE Gemini Monster. This card is treated as a Normal Monster while face-up on the field and in the Graveyard. While this card is face-up: You can Normal Summon this card; It is treated as an Effect Monster, and gains the following effect:

* When (exactly) 1 FIRE Gemini Monster you control is targeted by an opponent's card effect: You can negate that effect. When this card is destroyed: You can target 2 cards in your Graveyard that were equipped to a Gemini Monster(s) while on the field; Add 1 of those targets to your hand, and the other target to your Deck.

15n3atv.png

Effect: Equip only to a FIRE or Pyro-Type Gemini Monster. Any monster that attacks or is attacked by the equipped monster loses its effect, until the End Phase.
