This is probably a stupid suggestion that will cause even more havoc if somehow implemented but...

 

What about a members-only backup server? We have lurkers flooding this place.

With the backup server, guests can stay on their own server and not block access for the members that use the forums.

Since the rumor about non-activated members have been part of the problem, I support. Best to let members become registered then sign up for nothing.

Where do people get all these ideas about what causes the server trouble?

"No, it was obviously the guests, because about three-quarters of the people who view the site are guests, and pages taking hours to load and the entire site becoming inaccessible obviously indicates that there's only about four times as much lag as there should be!" "No, I'm pretty sure I'm right because everybody knows I'm right!" "No way, I must be right because there's a rumour, and the people spreading the rumour obviously heard from YCMaker directly!"

 

The bugs have been taken care of, and - surprise! - we still have guests and accounts that people don't use. Now, intelligent people might take that as a sign that maybe the guests and accounts that people don't use were never the problem, but this is YCM.
