But the anime does have a plot. It's quite simple really.

You start off with a cliffhanger from the previous series. Then you have a certain Pokemon fry a certain girl's bike. Then you have a certain trainer beat all the gym leaders. Then you have the same certain trainer lose in the MOST IMPORTANT TOURNAMENT OF HIS LIFE.

Seems like the entire show is just filler.

 

Red is the best (some might also say craftiest) NPC in the entire game. Ash is a slightly better-than-average Trainer with a buttload of luck on his side. Red wins forever.
