Substitoad Confusion???

Recommended Posts

Okay it's like this today at my Locals there was a Kid who was playing a Frog Deck and i was playing a Version of the Quickdraw Plants and the Kid mainly Confused me because of this:

1-He was playing a Deck that a lot of people at my Locals Don't get.

2-He pulled off an OTK in almost every Game.

I don't get it.Why?Because of this.He played like in every Deck their Ace Card Substitoad and this is the weird Part unlike other Decks his Main Strategy was to bring out 3 copies of Unifrog. If you don't remember who that is it's the Little 400 ATK Monster that Attacks directly and the other Part of his Strategy was that Pesky Little Spell Card called Wetlands. That was the one that gave Unifrog and the other Frogs 1200 ATK. He managed in every Duel to take out Substitoad to the field and then take out 2 more Copies of it with Inferno Reckless Summon. He also managed to Summon the Dupe Frog in Defense Position but this is what i do not get.

Is Substitoad really allowed to activate it's Effect more than once?

Now i don't know that and one more thing before i go.Was he able to win with an OTK because:

1-He is a very Skilled Player and has utilized Unifrog to it's Maximum Capabilities?

Or more Preferably...

2-The main reason he managed to Summon 3 of those Frogs is because when he Tributed Poison Draw Frog with Substitoad he activated the Effect and drew 1 Card which lead to drawing Inferno Reckless Summon?

Please tell me this i need to know the Rulings for these Frog Monsters.

Illegal play. You cannot draw. It misses timing. Commonly known ruling. How did a whole tourney miss it?

Yes, Substitoad can activate its effect any number of times per turn. Its effect is not very powerful in its summoning ability - it's often abused to thin your deck infinitely.

I don't understand, though - he summoned 3 Unifrogs with Wetlands in play - that gives him 3 1600 ATK monsters. That's not an OTK, that 4800 damage, and requires 3 cards to start.

No it's like this it wasn't an OTK every time but it was often. The whole Tourney missed it i don't see how but there is only one Man at our Tourneys who knows good Card Rulings. But the main reason i think he kept winning is because of 2 things:

1-He kept drawing Cards with Poison Draw Frog.

2-When he attacked with Unifrog even though it was the only Frog Monster on the field he destroyed Trap Cards that could save players a lot.He destroyed Torrential Tribute and such Cards.

Anyway it really confuses me how Substitoad could keep Tributing Monsters. It doesn't say Once per turn but it makes me think why would Konami make a Card that could bring your Deck to such a Little amount that you could then use a Card that takes Advantage of it.Anyway he pulled several OTK moves by using some other Cards as well yes something like Mass Driver.Anyway if Substitoad's Effect is like you say Infinite, then all of us at the Locals are Screwed.

And he brought out Substitoad really easily with one for one which really helped him.

Wait, you're using Quickdraw Plants - and YOU'RE screwed?

Yes, the Substitoad loop of death is problematic - Mind Master has a weaker version of the effect and it's Limited (I think). But that's only when you're using the massively thinned deck and/or overflowing graveyard as a weapon (see also Exchange of the Spirit, Blasting the Ruins, etc.). In straight Frogs (and it sounds like that's what he's using), the only abuse is thinning of useless cards and comboing with Dupe Frog.

Anyway, it looks like people need to get hit over the head with some serious rulings / reading of cards. If his deck gets hit with that, I think the deck will be much easier to deal with.

EDIT: And 141 is Limited - is he only using one copy?

Well i am only playing a very Basic Version of Quickdraw Plants. For God's Sake i don't even have Drill Warrior the Card that saves the Deck. And What do you mean by 141-If you mean One for One yes he plays 1 Copy. And next time at Locals i will tell him that he misses the Timing of Poison Draw Frog because obviously that is how he obtains Inferno Reckless Summon and Wetlands in his Hand all the Time.
