I want to give a card the effect that does this: it attacks the opponents monster, but the target monster is destroyed by the effect instead of battle.

This is what I have right now: "When this card attacks an opponent's monster, destroy it with this effect".

I know that that doesnt sound right, so I was wondering how someone else would write it.

When this card attacks an opponent's monster, destroy the monster with this effect.(Damage calculation is applied normally).

If you destroy a monster before the Damage Step, the attack does not officially go through, and thus, damage is not yet calculated.

 

I think you're talking about "...before damage calculation." But in that case, applying damage calculation is just redundant.
