Rydia was feeling uncomfortable in the Fairy Tail guild. She'd been a member for a week now, but she just couldn't find it in her to get in the festivities like the rest of the guild members. I mean, she was happy to see that everyone was having so much fun, but she felt especially dismayed to see that there was another Summoner in the guild that basically had seniority over her. And yet, in spite of that, she felt cheated. She was certain that she was the original whip-wielding Summoner, although the girl, Lucy, didn't really use hers that much. She mostly relied on her summons, or as Lucy referred to them as, her Celestial Spirits. But Rydia, she used her whip just as much as her Eidolons, and she was a master of fire and ice, the wielders of those elements being used by a bickering duo that reminded Rydia a lot about Edge.

In fact, she was kind of beginning to miss Edge. He was really annoying, but he was - and though Rydia hated to admit it - kind of cute. But he had a kingdom to handle, he couldn't be bothered with a pretty girl like Rydia. Well, at least that's what Rydia was trying to convince herself, even though she knew Edge was irresponsible enough to do it anyway.

"Something wrong?" said a voice, breaking Rydia's train of thought. It was Erza Scarlet, who was probably one of the more responsible members of the guild she'd met so far. Rydia admired her already.

"Huh? Oh, nothing. It's just - I don't think I really stick out as much. Natsu, Gray, Lucy, I'm just like them with what I can do."

Erza smiled. "You sure about that?"

"What do you mean?"

"You said it yourself, you're just like those three." She pointed to Natsu, Gray, and Lucy, the former being in a typical fight and the latter trying in vain to find a new shirt, since Natsu had set her old one on fire moments ago. "Well, in terms of what you can do, at least. But that does make you stick out. Remember that mission last week with those thugs? You showed a lot of your power there."

"Thanks, Erza."

"I mean it. Natsu, Gray, Lucy, it might be fun doing a 3-on-1 against them, but I wonder if you would be able to be just as good."

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying: How about we have a fight? A friendly one, no strings attached."

Out in the courtyard, people had gathered to watch Erza fight Rydia. Rydia noticed a board tallying bets between Erza and "Newbie". Judging by the tally marks, everyone in the guild must have bet on Erza, save for one person. The one person that actually did bet on Rydia was Kana Alberona, who had only done so in fit of drunkenness, though she had bet "negative blue fishes on the Newbie," which had earned her a scolding from a blue cat, Happy, who said that blue fishes don't taste nearly as good as red fishes, and a negative blue fish would taste even worse.

At the sound of the bell, Erza used her Requip magic to don a black suit of armor, with wings attached for flight. However, Rydia held her whip ready and began to charge a Fire spell.
