Don't neg me if this sucks, it's my first fan fic.

[spoiler=Prologue]

Mario glared in hatred at his rival.

"Sonic the Hedgehog." He breathed, then jumped out of the way as Rolf and Septimus almost ran into him, playing a childish game of tag with Jenna, Tingle, Link, and Line Rider.

"Mario." Sonic muttered, then ran up to his lifelong rival.

"I see we meet again."

Mario rolled his eyes. "We've been running into each other all week. How many times are you going to say that?"

Sonic shrugged, grinning. "Until it makes you explode."

They both burst into laughter.

 

 

After defeating SubSpace, a bunch of the brave warriors, including Mario, Sonic, Link, Bowser, Ike, the Ice Climbers, Ganondorf, Samus, and several others, decided to take a relaxing break at Smash Beach, where they met up with several new people. But only a week into their trip, something began to go terribly wrong...

 

 

 

[spoiler=Chapter 1]

Bowser was the first to notice that something was amiss. He turned to look behind him, and thus recieved the full force of the attack. Bowser was knocked several feet back, severely injured. Up to him walked... Zelda. But it wasn't exactly her. Her entire form was pitch black, nothing more than a silhouette. Zelda drew her Bow of Light, and shot a pitch black arrow through Bowser's form. He jerked, and slowly stood up, as his form darkened to a silhouette. Shadow Bowser had risen. Shadow Zelda let out a cry, and a group of Shadow fighters instantly swarmed Smash Beach. Shadow Ice Climbers, Donkey Kong, and Marth began battling with the still-pure team of Septimus and Jenna. The two of them were by far better in battle, but slowly they collapsed to the combined might of three shadow fighters. Minutes later, Septimus and Jenna had been shadowed.

 

Yoshi was knocked back by Shadow Line Rider's sled. He fell to the ground, and slowly silhouetted. Mario cried out when he saw his faithful companion struck down, but there was nothing he could do, except fight for his life against Shadow Samus. Shadow Samus was blasted away by Sonic's smash orb, and returned to normal, along with DK and Pit. The battle was not hopeless, but it would be difficult. Shadow Luigi jumped onto Shadow Yoshi, and rode off to assist Shadow Septimus in his battle against Tingle, who was putting up a surprisingly good fight against Shadow Septimus, Kirby and Marth. Mario turned and fled into the forest, knowing that the remainder of the fighters would be completely obliterated any minute.

 

 

[spoiler=Chapter 2]

Mario ran deeper into the woods, until the sounds of fighting died behind him. Finally, he felt safe enough to slow down, and he stopped.

"What's going on?" He asked himself. "Shadows... It's like Subspace all over again."

 

Shadow Shinon looked around in satisfaction. Smash Beach was now well and truly destroyed. He called to Shadow Septimus, who ran over.

"Any survivors?" Shinon's voice pierced through the silence of the abandoned beach like a knife.

Septimus shook his head. "They're all taken. Except..."

"Except what!?" Shinon turned to Septimus angrily. "Nobody could have survived."

"Well," Septimus said slowly, unwillingly, "Mario's managed to escape. And Sonic's nowhere to be found."

Shinon nodded. "Very well. We expected that, anyway. They somehow always do. Position our soldiers throughout the lands. Mario, Sonic, whoever we face has no chance of survival."

Septimus nodded gratefully and ran off to do what he was told.

 

 

Mario froze as he heard something in the distance. He snuck up behind a tree, then jumped out to see Shadow Yoshi patrolling the forest. Mario immediately assumed a fighting stance, as did Yoshi.

 

After a brief, but fairly simple, brawl, Yoshi was defeated, and returned to normal.

"Yoshi!" It shouted, joyful to be freed from the shadows that had controlled it moments ago.

"Yes, I know." Mario said, looking around. "I don't understand it either, but... But we've got to rescue the others!"

 

 

Sonic sat down on an old tree stump, then jumped up as he saw something in the distance. Shadow Luigi and Jenna! Sonic got into a fighting stance, and the battle began.

 

 

[spoiler=Chapter 3]

Sonic collapsed on the ground. He had managed to fight off Shadow Jenna and Luigi, but had been unable to purify them. However, he had escaped with relatively minor injuries. I just don't get this. He thought to himself. I beat Luigi, but... But why didn't he purify? He was totally unconcious... But... maybe that girl, Jenna, had something to do with it. She uses some magic... healing magic? Maybe. I guess I'll have to get rid of her, first. Then I can move on to Luigi.

 

Mario hopped on Yoshi, glad to be back with his companion. Yoshi took off, before stopping suddenly in front of an arrow, shot into the ground not two feet from Yoshi. Mario hopped off Yoshi, and turned to face Shadow Rolf, who already had his bow drawn. Rolf glanced over Mario's shoulder, and let fly one arrow, which Mario easily dodged.

"Missed me!" Mario taunted, before throwing a fireball at Shadow Rolf.

Rolf grinned, blocking the fireball with his shield. "Wasn't aiming for you."

Mario spun around to see what Rolf had hit, and realized, with a growing dread, that Rolf had hit a smash orb. Shadow Rolf became enveloped in a black light, as Yoshi ran behind a tree.

"Final Smash!" He shouted, and then he took his quiver of arrows, and put it on his bow, except for a single arrow, which he tucked into his belt. Rolf shot his quiver high into the air, then ran the tip of the arrow he had taken along the bow, where it began to burn. Rolf shot the burning arrow into his quiver, still high in the air, and it exploded, raining arrows everywhere. Rolf jumped under a tree, out of the way, but Mario, in the middle of the clearing, had nowhere to go. Struck down by arrow after arrow, Mario collapsed, and became Shadowed.

Shadow Mario shot a fireball at the tree Yoshi was hiding behind, and it began to burn. Yoshi, desperate, began to battle Shadow Mario, as Shadow Rolf shot another burning arrow into the sky, signalling to all other Shadow fighters. Rolf grinned, as Yoshi narrowly avoided a fireball launched from Mario. But then... Yoshi shot his tongue out and ate Shadow Mario. Rolf took a step back, as Mario broke out of the egg, extremely weak. Yoshi whacked him in the head with his tongue again, and Mario reverted to normal form. They turned to Shadow Rolf.

 

Sonic saw the burning arrow and decided that it would be useful to know what was going on. He began running towards where the beacon had originated. But he would not go uninterrupted. Shadow Line Rider had been heading to the same place, and when he saw Sonic, he hopped off his sled and attacked.

 

The battle was fierce, as Line Rider was able to use his sled as a shield to block all of Sonic's attacks, but eventually, Sonic found a Fire Flower patch off to the side. He grabbed one, and ignited Line Rider's sled. Sonic grinned. Now this is more of a fair fight.

 

 

[spoiler=Chapter 4]

After purifying Line Rider, Sonic continued on his way to the place he had seen the burning arrow come from, Line Rider close behind. Their journey was fairly uneventful, until Shadows Link, Rolf, and Tingle cornered them. Line Rider and Sonic backed away slowly, until they came up against a tree. Nowhere else to go.

 

"Hey! Come back here!" Mario yelled, when Shadow Rolf had ran off. Sonic heard him, but payed no attention to it, too intent on avoiding Rolf and Link's attacks. Tingle was staying behind, for some reason. Mario and Yoshi finally caught up to the Shadow fighters, and, taken aback by how many there now were, attacked. And so the biggest battle yet began.

 

Yoshi and Line Rider managed fairly easily against Shadow Tingle, Yoshi eating him, Line Rider whacking him with the sled until he purified. But Link and Rolf were much stronger. Whenever Yoshi tried to eat one of them, Link tried to stab his tongue, and so Yoshi decided to try something else. Yoshi stood back, and let fly some eggs at Link, thinking that if Link was gone, eating Shadow Rolf would be easy. Yoshi was wrong. As Shadow Link was being pelted with eggs, Rolf took out his bow, and shot Yoshi with an arrow. Yoshi fell back, but the other fighters couldn't pay attention to that. Mario was struggling to dodge bombs Link was throwing at him, and Sonic was trying to get closer to Rolf, having Line Rider use his sled to shield both of them from Rolf's arrows. Tingle just stood off to the side and danced. Then he called out,

"Tingle, Tingle, kooloo, limpah!"

Something near Rolf exploded, and he was knocked twenty feet away into a large tree. Then he fell to the ground and slowly purified.

Yoshi looked at Tingle in amazement, and got hit by one of Link's bombs as a result. As Yoshi slowly silhouetted, Masrio, suddenly free from the onslant of bombs, threw a fireball at Shadow Link. Link turned in surprise, and Sonic rammed into his back. Line rider got to work on Yoshi, but after Yoshi ate his sled, he had no trouble silhouetting Line Rider.

 

Suddenly, everybody turned and stared at something. A Smash Orb! Whoever got that would surely be the winner of the battle. Rolf, now purified, let loose a string of arrows after it. Shadow Yoshi jumped up and swallowed it, but Link launched his boomerang, and snatched it away from Yoshi. Timgle grabbed the Orb randomly and it broke. Tingle filled with energy, and yelled,

"Tingle, Tingle, Kooloo, Limpah!!"

Nothing happened.

"Oh, yeah, that sometimes happens." Tingle tried to explain, but nobody cared.

Shadow Line rider jumped over Tingle, smashing him in the head with his sled, and Tingle went down. Yoshi began throwing eggs at Mario, and Link was battling with Sonic. Sonic got in a lucky kick, and Link fell to the ground. Then someone else appeared.

 

 

[spoiler=Chapter 5]

Everybody froze, even the Shadows, as they stared at the young boy who had entered the arena. Mario noticed three things about this boy. First of all, he wasn't shadowed. Secondly, he had very strange hair. But the most important thing he noticed last. This boy was-

 

The boy interrupted Mario's thoughts by running up and hitting Shadow Yoshi with a large wrench. After just a single attack, he jumped back and watched Yoshi's health drain, healing his own injuries. he looked on as Shadow Line Rider ran up to attack him. He pulled out his wrench, and then a wall appeared, separating him from Shadow Line Rider. Shadow Yoshi, very weak by now, could only look on at the three mechanisms on top of the wall, which were now pelting Line Rider's sled, which he had hidden underneath, with small shards. It was a flak cannon. Three of them. Yoshi gulped, and then purified. This boy was very strong.

 

The boy glanced at Shadow Line Rider hiding under his sled, avoiding the flak cannons' projectiles. The boy's eyes gleamed in the light, and the cannons reloaded, now launching hot magma. Line Rider's sled burst into flames, and Line Rider was knocked back, his clothing singed, as he purified. The boy grinned, and another flak cannon appeared, to blast a newly appeared Smash Orb to pieces. The boy grinned, as an aura of energy appeared around him.

'Final Smash!' He yelled, holding his arms out. Suddenly, acid began falling from the sky, and everybody fell to their knees. Mario gaped at the boy's power. His final smash was stronger than anything Mario had ever seen before. Except...

 

[spoiler=Five years ago...]

Mario grins at Bowser.

"Final Smash!" He yells, and launches a huge fireball at Bowser. Bowser jumps the huge blazing attack, with help from the bunny hood he had picked up some minutes ago. Bowser throws a Smart Bomb at Mario, who is hit dead-on. Mario is knocked out of the arena. Link finally defeats his own foe, Ganondorf, and turns to help Mario fight Bowser. Ganondorf and Mario respawn, as a fifth fighter appears from the depths of the cave they are fighting outside of. Pit shoots his bow, knocking Bowser away from Link. Then, he sees a Smash Orb. He launches his bow again, and the Orb shatters. Pit is enveloped in a golden light, much more than a normal Smash Orb would.

"Mega Smash!" He yells. He's not sure where the words come from, but he knows that they fit. Pit shoots his bow straight up, and then something far more powerful than a Final Smash happens. The customary angels appear, but instead of attacking Pit's foes, they swarm Pit. Pit falls back in surprise, but the Angels lift him up, keeping him on his feet. Pit looks at the Angels in amazement, then turns to the others. He draws his bow, and when he lets loose an arrow, all the angels lauch an arrow as well, at the same place. Mario, who was the one the arrows had been aimed at, swipes his cape, hoping to deflect the arrow back at Pit. The arrows shoot back at Pit, but the angels protect him again. Not a single arrow hits him. Pit grins, and shoots again. The barrage of arrows this time hits Link, knocking him off the battle arena with more force than a golden hammer. Mario, Bowser, and Gannondorf watch Link sailing through the sky, as Pit nocks another arrow in his bow. The angels around him do the same. Mario, Bowser, and Gannondorf, completely forgetting their previous battle, charge Pit, but the angelic guard around him has other ideas.

"Attack!" Pit yells, and he swipes his sword at Ganondorf. The angels assist him, and soon Ganondorf is covered in scratches and cuts. Ganondorf is unconcious moments later. Pit turns back to Mario and Bowser, smiling. Mario, in desperation, signals to Bowser. Bowser nods, and charges Pit, as Mario jumps over his head to the other side. Pit easily knocks Bowser to the other end of the arena, and turns to Mario. But Mario had broken a Smash Orb, and was smiling, as the usual glow aura shone around him.

"Final Smash!" He shouts, and he launches a huge fireball, easily enough to knock out Pit and kill all his angels. But Pit takes out his mirror shield, and his angels do the same. Mario's Ultimate Fireball reflects right back at him, and Mario is KOd. Pit turns back to Bowser, and launches another arrow. Bowser is defeated.

 

 

 

 

"Mega Smash..." Mario said to himself. "That has happened before. But again?"

"Not exactly, Mario." The boy bended down to Mario, lying on the ground in the acid rain, as the rain began to cease. "See, Mega Smash Orbs are one-in-a-million chances. That wasn't a Mega Smash."

"B-but..." Mario was very weak from the boy's Smash attack. "But how could it be so powerful?"

Lock shrugged and stood up. "Some people say I'm the strongest fighter ever. There's a hint for you." He turned and walked away, blending into the trees and disappearing as suddenly as he had come.

 

 

[spoiler=Chapter 6]

The strongest fighter ever... Mario's thoughts drifted as he and the others were healing from Lock's incredibly powerful attack. Lock had purified every single shadow fighter, but left everybody feeling extremely weak. Yoshi was still trying to recover from having his life force drained, and Sonic was treating Line Rider for burns with some herbs Rolf had found off of the clearing.

"As soon as we can, we have to go." Rolf said to Tingle and Mario. "That arrow I sent up is definitely going to be attracting some unwanted attention. Again, guys, I'm really sorry that I-"

Mario raised a hand to cut Rolf off. "You didn't have a choice. You were shadowed."

Rolf nodded sadly. "But still, I tried to kill you guys. I'll never forgive myself."

"Too bad." Sonic walked over. "Don't blame yourself, blame whichever idiot caused this horrible thing to happen! 'Cause it ain't your fault that some guy possessed you!"

Rolf nodded sadly. "But still, I'm so sorry. And now I've done something that means Shadows will be here any minute!"

 

Shadow Donkey Kong turned and ran. Shinon will not be happy to hear this. He thought to himself, sprinting away from the fighters' makeshift camp. DK had been the closest Shadow to Rolf's flare, and so he was the only one there yet. And he wasn't going to hang around. If they can even take out Rolf, there's no way I"ll be able to stop them. He stopped as he came across Shadow Zelda, striding towards the clearing intently, glowing with the power of the Smash Orb she had grabbed on her way.

"What!?" He voice was sharp in the silence of the thick forest. "Even Rolf?" She paused. But they're all weak and useless from that Smash Attack of Lock's. And my Bow of Light is instant death to anybody it hits. So I'll have any one helper from among them. Thanks for the help, Lock. Zelda discredited everything Shadow DK had told her, and continued on into the clearing, where the group was already in a battle with Shadow Olimar and his team of pikmin. Alone, none of them were any useful, but together, they were putting up a good fight. Nobody had been shadowed, but Zelda soon fixed that, by putting a black Arrow of Light through Sonic. And so, three on five, another battle began.

 

Shinon turned to Septimus angrily.

"What do you mean Rolf's been purified!?" He yelled angrily. "He was one of our strongest shadows!"

"I-I'm sorry, Shinon, but... but Lock came, and..."

"Ah, Lock." Shinon smiled slightly, in a way that made Septimus wish he was yelling. "I geuss we've got a new target, then."
