Simple/Advanced Sprite Animating (Part 2: Advanced Animating now up!)

[align=center]I am going to make a tut on how to animate. I am using GIMP but it is also easy to follow with any other GFX program (eg. Photoshop).

Part 1: Simple AnimatingI am going to animate a Pikachu. Pokemon are probably the best thing to animate. Firstly go to http://www.pokestadium.com/sprites/ (IF Pokemon), and choose a few frames of your sprite. 3 frames should be about right.

Here are the frames I will use:

Also make sure you avoid using Shinies and Emerald game Pokemon, unless all of the sprites are Shiny/Emerald game of course!

Bad example:

You can see that here I used Diamond/Pearl Charizard, A Shiny Diamond/Pearl Charizard and an Ruby/Saphire Charizard. Try to avoid this.

When you are happy with your sprites, make a new file on GIMP. Make it around 80x80 pixels and make sure it has a transparent Background. Duplicate the layer by the amount of sprite frames you have. In my case, 3.

Open all of the sprites on the different layers and anchor them as you go along.

Now go to file>Save as. Save as .gif. When the pop up comes up, make sure you tick save as animation. Then press export. When the other pop up comes, set it to 295 milliseconds and frame disposal to One frame per layer (replace). This is very important, if you want to have your animation work well.

You should end up with something like this:

As you can see it didnt work well, as I put the frames in the wrong places :P

Part 2: Advanced Animating

Now that you have some idea of how to animate, it's time to get more advanced. If followed correctly, the result will turn out like this:

27zyq9x.gif ( As you can see I left some black in there :P )

Right, lets start. Firstly, you need a sprite sheet with some effects go with your Pokemon. As you notice, in my example I didn't, but you still should include effects. [spoiler=Here's the Sheet i used]picachu%20sprites.bmp

As usual, open GIMP with a file around 80x80. Again, make sure it's has a Transparent BG. Again, as usual, duplicate the layer as many times as frames you will use. This time it's slightly different, as we are not using Sprites but a Sprite Sheet.

Now position the different parts of the sheet where the sprite is, and anchor them as always.

I know what you're gonna say now, they have other stuff in the BG. So now, we need to go to Layer>Transparency>Add Alpha Channel If not already added. Now pick the fuzzy select tool, click the BG and push Delete. Erase any left over parts.

Remember to position your sprites well, so they flow.
