Zimiri of the Muse
this is a report I wrote on "Hamlet" it is due tomorrow and am looking for immediate review.[spoiler=essay]Zach Kula Language Arts4-26-10 Hamlet Persuasive Essay Even though it was written four centuries ago, William Shakespeare's “Hamlet” was remains one of the greatest literary masterpieces of all time. Set at the castle at Elsinore in Denmark, tis the tragic tale of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark trying to get revenge on his uncle Claudius the new king, because Hamlet discovered that Claudius murdered his father. These are the reasons why this book shouldn't be included in the middle school curriculum: because many parts of this book are very confusing and hard to understand, secondly is because the main theme of this book is revenge, and lastly this book contains a lot of violence. This book has many parts that are hard to understand. If the reader is reading an unannotated version of this book he/she will be extremely confused and misinterpret important parts of the book. If the reader has an annotated version of the book, he/she will be constantly looking down to the bottom of the page and find out the meaning of the passage you are confused about. That makes the reading of the book a much longer process. On page 67 is a perfect example: “Lord Hamlet is a prince out of thy star.” Most readers would be completely confused and misinterpret that passage. It means, “Prince Hamlet is beyond his rank/social sphere.” Another reason why this book should not be in the middle school curriculum is because the main theme of this book s revenge. Hamlet wants revenge on his uncle, (king Claudius) Laertes wants revenge on Hamlet because he blames him for Ophelia's (Laertes's sister) death. In act I scene V hamlet states “Haste me to know't, that I, with wings as swift as meditation or the thoughts of love, may sweep to my revenge.” Which means Hamlet swears that he shall get revenge on his uncle no matter what. Television and video games are filled with revenge. So why shouldn't we have books that have revenge in them? Video games and television while though watched and played by many people are not mandatory and not taught. If this book became part of the curriculum the theme of revenge will become mandatory. The third and final reason why this book should not be included in the middle school curriculum is because it has a lot of violence in it. Towards the end of the book eight of the major characters die leaving only one major character alive. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are beheaded in England, Hamlet kills Claudius and Laertes, Claudius poisons Queen Gertrude, (Hamlet's mother) Laertes kills Hamlet, and Ophelia drowns herself. Most of this violence occurs on pages two-hundred-seventeen to page two-hundred-twenty-five. The reason for this not being in the curriculum is the same as the last point. Violence is seen everywhere, on T.V., on the internet, and in video games. But, video games, T.V., and the internet is used by almost everyone is not required. If Hamlet was introduced into the curriculum it would make violence mandatory for kids to read. The why “Hamlet” should not be included into the middle school curriculum are that it contains a lot of violence, has a main theme of revenge, and is very hard to understand. But, this is a great piece of literature and should be read. It remains and always will remain one of the greatest literary works of all time, but should not be made mandatory for middle school children. Just say that, but in a different way. But, this is a great piece of literature and should be read.
