because LATER, he went to help Ed & pals back into it, and he died THEN.

But I thought that the fifth laboratory was destroyed the first time around? Or am I mixing up the manga with the rewritten anime?

IDK HOW or WHERE it happened, I just know #66 led Ed and friends over to someplace, and while Mustang and Havok fought Lust, *which caused Havok his legs) a nit later on, ¨#66 tried intervening, and died.
