Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron Review

In my review of the previous game in the series, Renegade Squadron, I stated that the PSP Battlefront games were "somewhat underrated". Well, I take back that statement. Now I say they're SEVERELY underrated. I mean, seriously: If you can get past the camera issues and framerate slowdown you find a solid action game. With that said, let's delve into Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron.

STORY: A

At first, I was a bit skeptical about the story. I mean seriously, a Force-sensitive Clone?! But as I got into the campaign mode, I was suprised to discover that the story was worthy of one of the movies, but I wouldn't be suprised if it got the same lukewarm response the prequels got (Which I also think are underrated, except for Episode 1), but I digress. In fact, they actuallt gave a better explanation of the character's origins. It's still a bit nonsensical, but better than last time.

GAMEPLAY: A

One of the complaints that I had on Renegade Squadron was that battles were too short. Well, I can safely say that the issue has been resolved. Instead of simply reducing enemy reinforcements to 0, you must reach a set points target (Not unlike Assault from Battlefront 2). There's also the highly-anticipated vertical battlefront that connects ground to space. I do, however, find gameplay to be repetitive: Capture the Ion Cannon, shoot down the enemy shields, blow up reactor, escape pod. Other than that, though, the gameplay is great.

DIFFICULTY: B

In Renegade Squadron there were 2 difficulty modes, but here there's 3- Padawan, Knight, and Master. So that makes the range more diverse. The reason I gave this a B is simple: The story mode. IT'S TOO. FRAKIN'. HARD. Every time you die, you have to go back to the last checkpoint, which makes sense, considering you play as a hero, but still.

PRESENTATION: B

There's one thing in particular that remains intact from Renegade Squadron: The graphics. Once again, sorta polygonal, but somewhat detailed. The scenery, however, is more convincing.

SOUND: A

Most people think that the only thing worthwhile about this game is the sound. While I don't agree with them, you gotta admit that this game really nails the sound. Great music and great sound effects are, in fact, not really noticable when you enjoy the gameplay itself, like I have.

FINAL OPINION: A

If you had to choose between this and Renegade Squadron, go with this game. That's not to say Renegade is terrible, but Elite is better. Like I said, the handheld Battlefront games are extremely underrated. If you don't agree with me, then fine.
