DroutTrigger
Sony’s PlayStation Network may not be free of subscription fees much longer, according to oblique remarks by its CTO. SCE’s Chief Technical Officer Masayuki Chatani has this to say about Sony’s PSN plans in a recent interview, where he also explains how the slimlined PS3 and failed PSP Go were intended to appeal more to non-gamers: Maintaining service will mean continuing cost. This is a major issue for a home electronics manufacturer, isn’t it? Servers and the like have running costs, and we would face difficulties if our business depended solely on the sell-and-forget model. After we sell the hardware, though, we continue to sell products such as content and services. We expect to see considerable growth in digital content, such as game download services, avatar items and the like. We can also accept payment in a growing number of ways. In addition to single-payment packaged software, there are also schemes like monthly fees or per-item charges. I think this variety of payment methods will bring about a diverse range of playing methods, too. Presumably making the entire PSN service require paid subscriptions, as with Xbox Live, would be a last resort, but it certainly sounds as though free access to online gaming services may in part give way at some point to a subscription based model… source can be provided, but it has some adult material contend that forbid me to do so. anyway discuss. edit:Do not put any kind of crap about LOOLWOLS 360 BETTRER TAHNS PZ3!! or PZ3 OWNZ 360!! or any kind of argument that could start a flame war unnecessarily. this is to express our opinion of the matter. if you don't have anything to say about it, don't post at all. DroutTrigger
for the looks of it, Sony will stop making its Network been free so everyone will have to start paying. howerver this could be a good thing since they could make there servers much more stable and not to mention more stuff would be available. besides it was bound to happened one way or another. i guess they didn't wanted to make there customers pay for the network since the console was expensive to begin with and now that it has lower its price i guess there trying to get another way around for the loss of money they had. Cyber Altair
Now they're real, they won't charge people but rather ask for a fee if you're interested in a premium subscription. You wont lose any feature you currently have, rather you will find new features available if you subscribe. Sony itself said online play will stay free. I'm relieved. basically think of Runescape. Of course you can play free, but there's also premium. Also you guys are acting like you're going to have to pay 200$ a month for it. It's only probably gonna be 5-15$ a month. Anybody over the age 10 can manage to get that money in a month.

shatteredfox
if anything, you can do what xbox players that don't want to play online(because sony will most likely do this.) you can buy membership cards from gaming store for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year.
