Prologue]

A frightened nurse scrambled around the hospital room.

"I don't have the experience to birth a baby!" she cried.

"YOU HAVE NO CHOICE!" screamed a woman from her hospital bed, grasping the rails to ease her pain. The nurse whimpered in frustration.

"OH!" screamed the woman as another contraction struck. The nurse hurried to her bedside, and looked at the different products left in the delivery room.

"I'm going to try numbing your pain; maybe we can hold him in until the doctor comes!" assured the nurse. The woman looked at her with contempt. The nurse knocked over a bunch of products on a cart beside the bed, not finding what she was looking for. She had seen the deliverer do this more than once.

The nurse found a silvery syringe next to the sink in the room. It appeared to be the numbing agent that she wanted. Presently, she snatched it up and ran to the woman's bedside.

"I'm going to put an IV into your arm. It will only hurt for a second," said the nurse calmly.

"I'M ALREADY IN ENOUGH PAIN, JUST NUMB ME!" screamed the woman in reply so loudly that the nurse dropped the syringe under the woman's bed.

Quickly, the nurse bent down and saw the shiny object under the woman's bed. That rolled far, she thought to herself.

The nurse jammed the IV needle into the woman's arm, and carefully distributed the numbing agent into the drip bag. The woman remained in pain.

"IT DIDN'T WORK!" screamed the woman.

"I need you to calm down!" replied the nurse in a choked up voice. The woman grabbed the nurse's hand and squeezed it so hard that the nurse fell to her knees.

The nurse gasped. She looked down, and the silvery object was on the floor. It was also on the bedside cart. She injected the wrong substance into the woman!

She bent down and grabbed it. I thought these rooms were cleaned out all the time! thought the nurse to herself. pi[under the bed was a small, empty space where an extension for taller persons could go. Maybe it was in there.

The nurse decided not to say anything, and swiftly switched the two syringes, pocketing the unknown one. Still, the nurse abruptly removed the IV, noticing that only a few drops had made it into the woman's system.

"WHY ARE YOU JUST STANDING THERE? DO SOMETHING!" screamed the woman at the nurse, spitting in her face slightly.

"I'm sorry, I'm not sure what to do."

"YOU'D BETTER DO SOMETHING SOON, NURSE-" the woman looked at a name tag the nurse was wearing, "BROOKLYN THAMES!"

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Kruekner, but I can't do anything, really!"

Suddenly, the door to the room burst open and Dr. Lieberman plowed into the room to deliver the child.
Chapter 1]

That night, Brooke returned to her apartment, in which she shared with two cats. She sat at her dining table, with the only light coming from the dim overhead lamp. Retrieving it from her pocket, Brooke exhaled, and turned it over and over in her hands. It looked exactly the same as the other syringe. After studying it, she found a small engraved printing that ran from three fourths away from the top end, to near the needle. It appeared to be a serial number, but studying it more closely, she realized it was the name for whatever was in the syringe.

It read "ACC0-G63." Brooke thought for a moment. What could be in there?

Finally, Brooke decided to release some onto a microscope slide she found. The liquid was red, but turned white when it was exposed to the air. It was a good thing she'd bought a microscope for a gift for a relative, and ended up having to get a new one for him. She turned the light on, and peered through the top lens. Carefully, she focused on the specimen, and finally found it. It was a bright white color. Swimming in it were small particles of some sort. They seemed to move in sync. Every once in a while, one would turn from black to white, and disappear. Then another black one would rise to the surface.

Brooke took her eye away from the lens, and looked at the white puddle on her microscope slide. She gasped at the sight. It had frozen onto her slide! Peering through the lens again, she noticed fine lines that hinted that the specimen was frozen. The small creatures continued their movement. This is what she injected into Mrs. Kruekner. She stood up and grabbed the slide. Walking to the sink nervously, she scraped off the specimen and washed it down the drain.

...

"Congratulations, Mrs. Kruekner, you are now the mother of a beautiful baby boy," announced Dr. Lieberman. "Time of birth, 11:11 PM; date of birth, November eleventh, 2011."

"Are you serious?" asked Mrs. Kruekner softly. "Eleven, eleven, eleven, at eleven eleven?"

"Lucky time, if you ask me. You're going to be staying here for one or two more nights, so rest peacefully."

"Can I hold my baby first?"

"Of course."

Dr. Lieberman carefully handed the baby to Mrs. Kruekner. When she held him she felt a sudden surge of cold. Thinking none of it, she smiled at her irritated-looking baby boy, and handed him back to Dr. Lieberman.

"Your anesthetic should wear off by the time you awaken. Right now, you won't be able to walk. Goodnight, Ma'am," closed Dr. Lieberman, leaving the room, taking the baby with him. Mrs. Kruekner knew why, and didn't fret.
