Let's just say that one thing is "p" and it's exact opposite is "q" (I know they aren't, but w/e) So "p" exists because of something, and that same thing causes "q" to exist. So in order to cancel out "q", you have to take out the source causing "p". So they are forced to exist together. If one thing exists without an opposite, then it either can't exist or we don't know what it's opposite is.
