I am more Hermetic than anything else.

Considers humanity to be on a spiritual journey to return to a state of unity with the Divine; this is the Great Work of humankind.

Holds that if we would attain to the Divine, we must aspire to the Divine; spiritual growth cannot be achieved without human effort

Teaches that when we seek the Divine, we may best begin with the Mysteries of Nature

Encourages spiritual curiosity

Understands that human beings can access the Subtle Realms through technique and aspiration; to this end, it embraces theurgy, meditation, ritual, and other spiritual and magical practices

Is a poetic rather than an ascetic worldview

Is what makes me more Hermetic than anything else.

I find Gnosticism to be rather sensible to be honest.

Just, it holds that the True God is good. Which makes no sense. Because any change to its essence must have been enacted by A. Itself or B. something outside its scope. Meaning it's not the True God after all.

So religiously-founded morality basically goes out the window. God is evil.

This is, of course, overlooking my belief that the very concept of a god is rather ridiculous. ;)

It is a sensible ideology.

At least it's a way to explain the existence of evil in the world and they put up a real complicated background story to support it. Tough stuff.

And yeah I'm having trouble with that god and goodness/evilness perception too, aside from the fact that morality isn't a main aspect of Gnosticism. It's considered good if it comes from that divine spark inside of you (not sure how you can pull that out though :?) but not if it's about ready-made rules that are thought to bring salvation like in some other religions.

The way I got it, the demiurge/creator is an antagonistic force (kinda like Satan) mostly because Sophia emanated without her male counterpart (Jesus (not as the human Jesus but he's a higher force here)). So without the divine. Or the "receipt of divine assent", whatever that means.

He would have been a rightful Aeon like the others if she hadn't tried to get past the way everyone else uses. Also, since that demiurge is not a primary force, but created via an emanation it's automatically lower than the real, highest god. That doesn't imply that the real god can't be perfect or that it's enacted by something outside its scope. Everytime an aeon or other force emanates it contains less divine part of god.

I guess that plus the nature of Sophia's emanation are what made the demiurge a flawed and lesser force.

...somehow like that :?

All things are derived from the first reality or perfect god by steps of degradation to lesser degrees of the first reality or God, and at every step the emanating beings are less pure, less perfect, less divine. Emanationism is a transcendent principle from which everything is derived, and is opposed to both Creationism (wherein the universe is created by a sentient God who is separate from creation) and materialism (which posits no underlying subjective and/or ontological nature behind phenomena, being immanent).
