But first, one must take into account that the armies are sometimes the ones who win the battles regardless of command. Though Rome often lost legions not due to poor training or soldiers, but do to inexperienced, proud generals. Alexander the Great of Macedonia was a man who thought on his toes, if a challenge was presented in battle, he instantly thought up a solution (though sometimes bold) to it which often resulted in a decisive victory. But... one must keep in mind that the army Alexander was first created by of Phillip II (Alexander's father) in the first place and Phillip used its pikemen to destroy the Athenians and conquer Greece. Plus, Persian armies were NOTHING in comparison to armored pikemen each with a sarissa (pike) about twenty feet long. though Darius (king of Persia) could rally hundreds of thousands of men to his wars, he would be lucky to have more than an fifth of them in armor. Taking persia was cake for Alexander due to the superier army, ability for Alexander to leave Macedonia while providing food and water for his marching army, and becuase there was always a place to go back to (like the cities Alexander conquered along the way). Though Alexander's brilliant thinking most likely was why his armies were so successful, not to mention the fact that he'd ride in the front line of battle. If that doesn't make you feel like the general's with you, I don't know what will.

Yet another example of how an army can surpass its leadership may be in the form of humanity. Though Julius Caesar conquered the Guals, one of Rome's greatest enemies, he was noted for killing retreating troops with his own sword in his earlier days. I suppose a general is made, not born. He learned to treat his men differently and not as a general was "supposed" to.

In any event, History is far to riddeled with great men that pin pointing the best is hard to do. But as far as all aspects go, Alexander the Great must be the greatest conquerer of all time. Mostly becuase he conquered more land in one lifetime than any other man in history while topling one the greatest empires on earth while expanding his empire farther than any man had done in so short a time.

I would also think Genghis Khan would be one of the greatest conquerers of all time.

You actually forgot Ivan the Terrible because he was the one who brought Russia to it's great size as it's now today.

Timur Lane

I used his nickname I guess.

Also you know how many Williams are out there?

Personally I would vote for Napoleon' date=' he is a really crazy dude during his time.

Also tied with Alexander, a person who destroyed the Persian deserves to be known.

Alexander planned on conquering Europe, Arabia, and even more. Dude would've done it too if it weren't for those crazy kids and their meddling dog.

Ceasar by far.

Ceasar conquered France. Hitler did that in 2 days.

Alexander' date=' if it's the one you're talking about, was a great leader for Rome.

[/quote']

No. Greece, or even more specifically, Macedonia.
