Episode 1: Duel for a School

???: I activate Celestial Transformation! | Celestial Transformation | Quick-Play Spell card | Special Summon 1 Fairy-Type monster from your hand. Halve the ATK of that monster and destroy it during the End Phase. | Bringing back my Airknight Parshath, who I’ll tribute to special summon Neo-Parshath, the Sky Paladin!

Roran: I’ll use Torrential Tribute! | Torrential Tribute | Trap Card | You can only activate this card when a monster is Normal Summoned, Flip Summoned or Special Summoned. Destroy all monsters on the field. | All monsters on the field are destroyed!

???: Then I’ll end my turn!

Roran: Ok! I can summon my Sea Drake Serpent | Sea Drake Serpent | WATER | Sea Serpent/Effect | ***** | 2000/1900 | During battle between this attacking card and a Defense Position monster whose DEF is lower than the ATK of this card, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your opponent. When "Umi" is face-up on the field, once per turn you can discard a card from your hand in order to destroy one card on the field. | without a tribute thanks to A Legendary Ocean! | A Legendary Ocean | Field-Spell | This card's name is treated as "Umi". Downgrade all WATER monsters in both player's hands and on the field by 1 Level. Increase the ATK and DEF of all WATER monsters by 200 points. | I’ll use his effect! By discarding a Water monster from my hand, your face-down card is destroyed! Direct Attack!

???: No!

Roran woke from the dream suddenly and jerked up his whole body like you do when you’ve had a nightmare. He groaned and looked at his watch on his bedside table. 3:00 am. He’d been having this recurring dream for a week now and it was really starting to annoy him. Every time he had it, he couldn’t get back to sleep. It had felt so real in the dream every time, though.

He got up and walked out of his room, heading to the kitchen. He caught himself in the mirror on the way and saw a slumped, tired looking person with massive bags under his eyes. He made a grunting noise and continued on to get a glass of milk.

*

It was the summer holidays. To be frank, Roran was actually quite bored. He’s been waiting for his friends at a cafe for 20 minutes, and was starting to get annoyed. The tinkling noise of the bell above the door was heard and Roran’s friends, Darius, Filho and James walked in.

Darius: Hey Roran.

Filho: If we go now, we still might make it.

Darius: Huh? Where?

James: Didn’t you hear? There’s a tag team tournament down at Darkard.

Roran: So that’s why there are so few people in town. Let’s go.

Darius: Wait, we need to decide on teams.

James: You go with Roran, Darius, it’s obvious you want to.

Darius: He IS the best out of us.

Filho: OK, I’ll go with James.

Roran: If we end up facing each other, duel your best and we’ll see who the strongest team really is!

Filho: I’d rather scoop than waste my time when I know I’ll lose.

James: Me too…

Roran: Hey, you’re taking the fun out of it!

James: No offense Roran, but losing to you isn’t my idea of fun.

Roran: Aww!

*

After running to get there and begging the organiser to let them play, Roran and his friends had entered the tournament. Roran and Darius were against Bonz and Zygor, two pale-faced duelists who used to be in the premier dueling tournaments.

All: Duel!

LP:

R&D: 8000

B&Z: 8000

Roran: I’ll start! I set a monster and I end my turn!

Bonz: I’ll summon my Black Drone! | Black Drone | DARK | Zombie/Effect | *** | 900/800 | Once per turn, you can Special Summon a "Black Drone Token" (Zombie-Type/DARK/Level 3/ATK 900/DEF 800). This card cannot attack during the turn you activate its effect. | And I’ll use his effect to summon a Black Drone Token! That’s it!

Darius: I’ll summon Guardian Fairy Eatos! | Guardian Fairy Eatos | LIGHT | Fairy/Effect | *** | 1000/700 | This card gains 300 ATK for each level 3 or lower monster in your graveyard. Once per turn, you can send a level 3 or lower Fairy type monster from your deck to your graveyard. | And I’ll use his effect to send a Mystical Shine Ball to my graveyard, which gives him a boost! (1000 > 1300) I end my turn.

Zygor: I summon Impenetrable Guard! | Impenetrable Guard | EARTH | Warrior/Effect | **** | 0/0 | If this card is in face-up defence mode, it is destroyed. By discarding 1 card, you can negate an attack. | That’s all, hehe…

Roran: Zygor’s monster is really weak, it must have some kind of effect. I should try to get rid of it. I activate the effect of my Warrior of Atlantis! | Warrior of Atlantis | WATER | Aqua/Effect | **** | 1900/1200 | You can discard this card to the Graveyard to add 1 "A Legendary Ocean" from your Deck to your hand. | By discarding him, I can get A Legendary Ocean from my deck! And I’ll activate it! | A Legendary Ocean | Field-Spell | This card's name is treated as "Umi". Downgrade all WATER monsters in both player’s hands and on the field by 1 Level. Increase the ATK and DEF of all WATER monsters by 200 points. | Then I’ll flip up my Nightmare Penguin! | Nightmare Penguin | WATER | Aqua/Effect | **** | 900/1800 | When this card is flipped face-up, return 1 card on your opponent's side of the field to the owner's hand. As long as this card remains face-up on the field, increase the ATK of all WATER monsters on your side of the field by 200 points. | And his effect lets me return your Black Drone to your hand! He also gets 200 ATK from my ocean and 200 from himself! (900 > 1300) Now I’ll attack Impenetrable Guard!

Zygor: Not so! By discarding a card, my monster can negate ANY attack on the field!

Roran: Fine! Then I’ll activate Monstrous Wave! | Monstrous Wave | Spell | Tribute WATER monsters that were Summoned this turn. Inflict 800 damage to your opponent for each monster tributed. | Now Nightmare Penguin is tributed and you take 800 damage!

LP:

R&D: 8000

B&Z: 7200

Roran: Now I’ll set one card and end my turn!

Hand:

R: 3

D: 6

B: 6

Z: 5

Bonz: My turn! I’ll activate the effect of my Black Drone again, so I get another token! I’ll also summon another Black Drone and use his effect as well! That’s all! (He now has 2 Black Drones and three tokens).

Darius: I activate the effect of my Guardian Fairy Eatos! Letting me send another Mystical Shine Ball from my deck to my graveyard! Now I’ll activate Fairy Spirit! | Fairy Spirit | Spell | Tribute a face-up Fairy monster on your field. Destroy one DARK attribute monster on your opponent's field. Your opponent then must destroy any cards with the same name as the destroyed monster on their field or in their hand. | By tributing Eatos, I can destroy both of your Black Drones!

Bonz: Hehehe… You’ll soon regret that!

Darius: I don’t think so! I’ll finish by summoning Guardian Fairy Shineman! | Guardian Fairy Shineman | LIGHT | Fairy/Effect | *** | 500/500 | This card gains 1000 ATK for every "Mystical Shine Ball" in your graveyard. Once per turn, when this card would be destroyed, you can remove a "Mystical Shine Ball" in your graveyard from play in order to negate its destruction. | And he gets 2000 ATK for the two Shine Balls in my graveyard! (500 > 2500) That’s all!

Zygor: I’ll switch my monster into defence mode, meaning he gets destroyed!

Roran: Why would he do that?

Zygor: And I’ll also activate Lend a Hand! | Lend a Hand | Spell | Activate only in a Tag-Duel. Shuffle 2 or more cards from your hand into your deck. Your partner draws the same amount of cards that you shuffled into your deck, from their deck. | So I’ll get rid of the four remaining cards in my hand and Bonz can draw four!

Bonz: Much appreciated Zy!

Zygor: And I’ll end my turn!

Hand:

R: 4

D: 4

B: 10

Z: 1

Roran: I’ll summon Warrior of Atlantis! And he gets a boost from my ocean! (1900 > 2100) Now attack his Black Drone Token!

Bonz: Not so! I’ll activate the effect of my Yami Kuriboh! | Yami Kuriboh | Trap | By discarding this and a DARK attribute monster from your hand, you can negate an opponent's attack and destroy the attacking monster. | Now I discard him and a DARK monster, and your warrior is destroyed!

Roran: Then I’ll end my turn!

Bonz: Hehehe! I’ll tribute my tokens, and summon my ultimate monster! Mummy King Droner! | Mummy King Droner | DARK | Zombie/Effect | ******* | 2700/2400 | This card can only be summoned by tributing 3 "Black Drone Tokens". When this card would be destroyed, negate its destruction and lower its ATK by 900 and its DEF by 800 and Special Summon a “Black Drone Token” (Zombie-Type/DARK/Level 3/ATK 900/DEF 800). After this card's effect has been used twice, destroy it (you cannot activate its effect to negate this) and Special Summon 1 "Black Drone Token". | Now attack his Shineman!

Roran: Not so fast! Didn’t you see? I activated my trap card Torrential Tribute! | Torrential Tribute | Trap | You can only activate this card when a monster is Normal Summoned, Flip Summoned or Special Summoned. Destroy all monsters on the field. | All monsters on the field are destroyed!

Bonz: Actually, my monster isn’t! When he would be destroyed, one of the monsters that formed him splits off! In other words, he loses 900 ATK and I get a Black Drone Token! (2700 > 1800) So Shineman gets destroyed anyway! And I can attack directly!

Roran: Uh-oh, sorry Darius!

Darius: Don’t worry, it could happen to anyone.

LP:

R&D: 6200

B&Z: 7200

Bonz: And I’ll finish by playing one face-down!

Darius: OK then! I’ll set a monster! That’s all!

Zygor: I’ll do nothing and end my turn!

Roran: Doing nothing. That’s a surprise, his part of their strategy is finished.

Hand:

R: 4

D: 4

B: 7

Z: 2

Roran: I’ll set one card and end my turn!

Bonz: Hehehe, you’ll regret doing nothing! Mummy King, attack!

Roran: Oh no you don’t! I’m activating The High Seas LV3! | The High Seas LV3 | Trap | Special Summon WATER monsters from your hand whose combined level(s) equal 3. You cannot Normal Summon or Set during the turn you activate this card. | Letting me summon Card Bearing Clam | Card Bearing Clam | WATER | Aqua/Effect | *** | 500/900 | When this card is Special Summoned from your hand, draw two cards. | and Electric Urchin, both in defence mode! | Electric Urchin | WATER | Thunder/Effect | ** | 200/400 | When this card is Special Summoned from your hand, destroy two cards on the field. | Remember, my ocean lowers their levels! Now I’ll use their effects! First, courtesy of my clam, I draw two cards! Now, my urchin zaps two cards on the field, namely your Mummy King and your Black Drone Token! I know your mummy isn’t destroyed, but it does change into just a regular Black Drone Token!

Bonz: Fine then! You may have killed my king, but I can still attack your urchin! And I’ll also use From Ashes to Destruction! | From Ashes to Destruction | Trap | Destroy all "Black Drone Tokens" you control. Destroy 1 card on the field for every "Black Drone Token" you destroyed. | My token may get destroyed, but so is your face-down monster Darius! So I’ll set one card and end my turn!

Darius: OK, I’ll remove my two Mystical Shine Balls and my Shineman in my graveyard from play in order to summon Guardian Angel Gabrious! | Guardian Angel Garbrious | LIGHT | Fairy/Effect | ******** | 2800/2400 | This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card can be Special Summoned by removing 3 Level 3 or lower Fairy Type monsters on your field or graveyard from play. Once per turn, you can Special Summon a Level 3 or lower Fairy Type monster from your hand. If "The Sanctuary in the Sky" is face-up on the field, this card can attack twice in the same battle phase. | And I’ll use his effect to summon Herald of Purple Light! | Herald of Purple Light | LIGHT | Fairy/Effect | ** | 300/500 | Send this card and 1 other Fairy-Type monster from your hand to the Graveyard to activate this effect. Negate the activation of your opponent's Trap Card and destroy it. This effect can be activated during either player's turn. | Hey Roran, how about a change of scenery?

Roran: My thoughts exactly.

Darius: All right then! I’ll play The Sanctuary in the Sky! | The Sanctuary in the Sky | Field-Spell | Battle Damage to the controller of a Fairy-Type monster from a battle involving that Fairy-Type monster becomes 0. | It may get rid of Roran’s ocean, but it makes up for it because it lets my Gabrious attack twice!

Bonz: Go ahead then! Attack!

Darius: Gabrious, attack!

Bonz: I’ll destroy your monster with my Sakuretsu Armour!

Darius: Haha! I prepared for that! By sending my Herald from my field, and Freya, the Spirit of Victory from my hand to the graveyard, I can stop your trap!

Bonz: WHAT!?

Darius: And I think I’ll have my monster attack you twice!

LP:

R&D: 6200

B&Z: 1600

Darius: And I think I’ll give you a break and stop there.

Zygor: Don’t worry Bonz, I’ll stop ‘em! Uhhhh… I have nothing in my hand to stop them… maybe Bonz has a plan?

Bonz: What’s your plan doofus!?

Zygor: I end my turn!

Bonz: WHAT!?!?!? Now they’re gonna win!

Zygor: I thought you had a backup plan!

Roran: Uh, sorry to break up this argument, but I’m about to win! I remove 3 WATER monsters in my graveyard from play in order to summon The Water Avatar! | The Water Avatar | WATER | Aqua/Effect | ****** | ?/1000 | This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card can only be Special Summoned by removing a number of WATER monsters from your field and graveyard from play. This card's original ATK is equal to the amount of monsters removed from play in order to summon it X600. All other face-up WATER monsters on your field gain 600 ATK. By discarding a card from your hand, you can take an "Umi" from your hand, deck, field or graveyard and add it to your hand. Your opponent must pay 700 life points per card in order to activate Spell or Trap cards during your turn. | Because I removed 3 monsters, his ATK is 1600! Direct attack, end this game!

Bonz: We were so close!

Zygor: Duh, boss, what we gonna do now we lost?

Darius: Yeah! Great going Roran! We kicked but!

The two boys high-fived as someone from the side of the store who was watching walked over and Bonz and Zygor disappeared in shame.

?: Hi, boys. My name is Frederick. I’ve been looking for young duelists such as yourselves to join Duel Academy, and you and your friends have what it takes!

Filho and James walked up from behind.

Fred: You’d be leaving tonight and starting tomorrow, so I suggest you go home and start packing.

Roran could barely remember what happened after that. All he knew was that he walked home in a stupefied smiling expression, and couldn’t wait to get to Duel Academy.

Cyber-Style Combination!

The sun rose high in the sky over Duel Academy. Roran and his friends had arrived, and were thoroughly tired from their overnight trip. Roran practically flopped onto his bed in the Slifer Red dorm but only managed a few hours sleep as he was woke up by James shaking him at 9:00. Darius and Filho were standing behind James.

James: Wake up Roran!

Roran: Why? It’s 9, and I’m tiiiireeeed!

James: We’re going to complain to the headmaster!

Roran: Why?

Darius stepped forward.

Darius: James thinks us being put in Slifer Red is an injustice.

James: We were accepted because of our elite dueling skills! And we’re younger and better than the other first-years!

Filho: It’s because we’re transfer students.

All except Filho: Huh?

Filho: Technically, we transferred into the school and all transfer students go into Slifer Red, there are very few exceptions.

James: Well we should be one of those exceptions! Let’s go!

James practically dragged the others out of the dorm and they grudgingly made their way to the headmaster’s office.

*

Secretary: Excuse me? Do you have an appointment?

James: Like hell we do! Let us in!

They had arrived at the headmaster’s office, but his secretary wouldn’t let them in.

Secretary: I’m sorry, you’ll have to leave, or I’ll call security.

Filho: C’mon, let’s go Roran.

Secretary: Wait a minute, are you the new transfer students?

Roran: Sure are.

Secretary: Roran Kyte, you may enter. Everyone else has to go.

James: Grr! Give him a piece of your mind Roran.

Roran: Calm down.

Roran walked into the office and was greeted with dank, dry air. Clearly, the windows hadn’t been opened for a long time. The headmaster rose from his seat.

Roran: Hey… are you the guy from the card shop?

Fred: Haha! I guess you recognised me! You truly did duel well my boy!

Roran: Uh… why did you call me in here sir?

Fred: Roran, I’m not going to lie to you, but what I can tell you is limited. I was sent to find you, and get you into this academy. For there are much greater forces at work here, and you are no ordinary person. All I can tell you is to search for the angel’s harp. You may leave.

Roran left the room completely puzzled, and felt slightly strange. His friends had gone.

Roran: Where did they go?

Secretary: Their first lesson has started, and it’s your lesson too. Here, take this timetable. It’s your only lesson today.

Roran grabbed the presented timetable and ran to his lesson, hoping the teacher would understand.

*

Fortunately for Roran, he did. He was a nice teacher called Mr. Korvin. The class was Decktypes & Creative Dueling, which was an easy subject. They spent the lesson going over flip-effect monsters, but Roran couldn’t tell his friends what had happened because he was late and therefore couldn’t sit next to them. He wasn’t sure that he wanted to tell them either. Eventually, the end of the lesson rolled round, and the bell rang.

James: That was the easiest lesson I’ve ever had.

Darius: That’s because you’re the teacher’s favourite, it was obvious.

James: No way! Back me up here Roran!

Roran: I didn’t know because I was sitting halfway across the classroom.

Darius: Oh yeah, sorry about that, the secretary practically kicked us out.

They continued walking down the corridor when suddenly an Obelisk Blue student stepped in their way.

Obelisk Blue: Excuse me, are you Roran? It’s a pleasure to meet you, I’m Marcus.

Roran: Uh, ok…

Marcus: I’m interested in you because you got into the school through pure dueling skill, which is quite lacking around here. I’m sure that together we would make great dueling partners.

Darius: Just who the hell do you think you are? You come in here all smarmy and try and take away our friend!

Marcus: Hmm. I don’t care much for this ragamuffin bunch. Everyone knows the only reason they got in is because they are friends with you.

James: Alright, now you better shut up!

Roran: Cool it, James. I’ll make you a deal, Marcus. We duel. If I win, you leave us alone. If you win, I’ll… leave the academy.

Roran’s friends: ARE YOU CRAZY!?

Darius: We just got here!

Marcus: Ahahaha! I like it, I like it a lot. You may not have the intelligence to join me, but you are a surely feisty duelist! I shall enjoy this!

*

Roran and Marcus were both standing at both ends of one of the dueling arenas. There were none free, but Marcus, who incidentally is very rich, bribed some of the people in one of the arenas.

Marcus: Before we duel Roran, there’s one thing. Strapped to my arm now is the latest hi-tech duel disk. It is the most compact of all the designs, and has a built in radar which can detect other duelists nearby, and relay me their dueling history via online satellite link. I am all for fair play, so I’ll even the stakes a little. If you win, you also get this duel disk.

Roran: That sounds good enough for me!

Both: DUEL!

Marcus: Billionaires first! I’ll activate Searchlights! | Searchlights | Continuous Spell | Set monsters are immediatedly flipped into face-up defence position. Pay 500 life points during each of your Standby Phases, if you do not, this card is destroyed. | Now whenever we set monsters, they get flipped up straight away! So I’ll set a monster and it gets flipped up! Cyber-Style Ni! | Cyber-Style Ni | EARTH | Machine/Effect | ** | 0/600 | You can Normal Summon this card by tributing "Cyber-Style" monsters from your hand or field whose total levels equal 2. Now I’ll activate Big Wave Small Wave! | Big Wave Small Wave | Spell | Destroy all face-up WATER monsters on your side of the field. Then you can Special Summon WATER monsters from your hand, up to the same number of monsters destroyed by this effect. | Now my penguin is destroyed and I can summon Mother Grizzly! | Mother Grizzly | WATER | Beast-Warrior/Effect | **** | 1400/1000 | When this card is sent to the Graveyard by battle, you can Special Summon 1 WATER monster with 1500 or less ATK from your Deck in face-up Attack Position. | Attack his monster!

Marcus: When my face-up defence position monster is attack, both our monsters are destroyed!

Roran: Then I’ll end my turn by setting one card!

Roran: Surprise! My Surprise Wave trap to be precise! | Surprise Wave | Trap | Activate when your opponent attacks you directly. Switch the attacking monster to defence mode and end the Battle Phase. | Your monster goes to defence and your battle phase finishes!

Marcus: Then I’ll end my turn!

Roran: I’ll start by activating A Legendary Ocean! | A Legendary Ocean | Field-Spell | This card's name is treated as "Umi". Downgrade all WATER monsters in both players’ hands and on the field by 1 Level. Increase the ATK and DEF of all WATER monsters by 200 points. | And by its effect I can summon Sea Drake Serpent without a tribute! | Sea Drake Serpent | WATER | Sea Serpent/Effect | ***** | 2000/1900 | During battle between this attacking card and a Defense Position monster whose DEF is lower than the ATK of this card, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your opponent. When "Umi" is face-up on the field, once per turn you can discard a card from your hand in order to destroy one card on the field. | And he gets a boost! (2000 > 2200) Now attack his monster! And don’t you forget he does piercing damage!

LP:

R: 8000

M: 6000

Roran: That’s all!

Hand:

R: 3

M: 4

Marcus: I admit! You’re doing quite well, but that will soon change! I still need to bide more time until I draw the right card… But I can’t defend because of his Serpent. Looks like I’ll have to use a trap. I’ll set a monster and a card and end my turn!

Roran: Finished already? Serpent, attack!

Marcus: You fell right into my trap! I’m activating Mirror Force! | Mirror Force | Trap | You can only activate this card when your opponent's monster declares an attack. Destroy all Attack Position monsters on your opponent's side of the field. | Now your monster is destroyed!

If you do this, this card can attack twice in the same battle phase. Double Style Strike!

LP:

R: 1800

M: 6000

Marcus: Now I end my turn!

Roran: But first, I activate The High Seas LV3! | The High Seas LV3 | Trap | Special Summon WATER monsters from your hand whose combined level(s) equal 3. You cannot Normal Summon or Set during the turn you activate this card. | Letting me summon Warrior of Atlantis from my hand because of my ocean!

R: 1800

M: 0

Darius: Yeah! Awesome Roran!

Roran: You said it!

 • 2 weeks later...

Rain spattered continuously on the dark tarmac of the back alley. The two pale-faced boys sat there shivering, with a blanket shared between them. “How did we get ourselves into this mess, Zygor?” asked the shorter of the boys, “It seems since we escaped the shadow realm we’ve just gone downhill.” As the boy said this he stared into space, his eyes growing wide in remembrance of the dark dimension where they had once been. “If it wasn’t for Sid protecting us from that monster, we would have never escaped. But he’s still trapped there…” Zygor was the speaker this time.

A shadow heavily lengthened by the moonlight appeared at the entrance to the alley. The two boys looked up to see a cloaked man whose hands were adorned with black markings, which looked like tattoos. “You are Bonz and Zygor, correct?”

“That’s us.” Bonz said wearily, he didn’t care much what happened, his life couldn’t get much worse. “I’d like to make a proposition with you. My name is Empreneg. I could get you back to being high class duelists, and give you a home.”

“Yeah right. You’ll probably just murder us and throw us in a dumpster.” Zygor said defensively. “Hmm. You don’t think much of yourselves…” It almost seemed as if the man was about to leave, “Anyway. My proposition is simple. You will both duel me in a triangle duel. If you win, you may leave. But if I win, I will grant you the dreams I told you about before. Sound good enough?”

“What have we got to lose?” Bonz said to Zygor, who merely nodded.

The two boys got to their feet and walked into position to make a triangle shape with the man, which was hindered slightly by the narrow alley. All four activated their duel disks and shouted “Duel!” in unison.

Episode 3: Familiar Pale Faces

Episode 3: Familiar Pale Faces

Roran stared drearily though to wet window. It was a stormy night and he was in his dorm in his pyjamas. For one reason or another, he couldn’t sleep. Frederick’s words danced around his mind, making him feel anxious and confused. Thankfully, his friends had seemed to forget to ask him what he talked to the headmaster about.

Suddenly, there was a brilliant crash of light from a huge strike of lightning, which made Roran jump. He looked out the window and saw a patch in the grass not too far off where the strike had hit. He hurriedly dressed into his uniform, grabbed his umbrella and went to check it out.

When he reached the scorched patch, he found a card. It had a blank picture and no text on it. Roran looked around confusedly before putting it in his pocket. Although the mysterious card intrigued him, he was also very tired and getting wetter by the second. He began to trudge back to his dorm when he was suddenly stopped by a cloaked figure jumping out at him. “Who the hell…?” Unfortunately, he did not finish his sentence as the figure jumped on him, covering his mouth with a chloroform-soaked rag. Roran didn’t have the energy to fight back.

Roran awoke on a hard surface, groaning from grogginess and general aches. The rain had seemingly stopped, and a dark purple mist floated around. As Roran rose, he realised he was on top of the academy roof. At the other end he spotted the cloaked figure, behind him there was another cloaked person. What caught Roran’s eye the most though, was Darius who was trapped in a relatively small rusted cage next to the furthest captor.

“So you’re finally awake!” The nearest figure called, his voice seeming to be carried by the dark mist that surrounded the roof. Both cloaked figures removed their hoods in unison, revealing the closest to be Bonz, and the furthest next to the cage to be Zygor. “Why are you…? What’s going on?” Roran wearily asked, barely believing what was happening. Bonz did not answer. “Wake him up.” He grunted to Zygor, and Roran realised Darius had been asleep.

Zygor shook the cage and it swung from side to side, as if suspended by some invisible string. It was only now Roran saw that it, strangely, was floating. Darius groaned as he looked up, opening his eyes. Bruises streaked his face. “What have you done, you bastards!” Roran shouted.

“I’m not going to waste time here Roran,” Bonz said calmly, clearly enjoying Roran’s panic, “we are going to duel. It will be a Shadow Game where the winner loses their soul. As my life points get lower, the age will rise higher, and drop if I am defeated. So if you do win, you’ll risk Darius’ life, and me and Bonz will return to the Shadow Realm.” Roran was unnerved by the word ‘return’; he knew he had no choice. He looked into Darius’ scared and panicked eyes. “I accept.” Roran said with an air of confidence. He was going to save his friend. “Then let us begin!” Bonz called smiling. “DUEL!” They shouted in unison.

Bonz: I’ll start!

Bonz drew a card. After looking at his hand quickly, he spoke.

Bonz: I end my turn!

Roran: That’s weird… Why didn’t he do anything?

Roran: My go then! I’ll summon Mother Grizzly! | Mother Grizzly | WATER | Beast-Warrior/Effect | **** | 1400/1000 | When this card is sent to the Graveyard by battle, you can Special Summon 1 WATER monster with 1500 or less ATK from your Deck in face-up Attack Position. |

A blue-furred bear appeared on the field, slobbering and bearing its claws, ready to attack.

Roran: Direct Attack!

The bear lumber towards Bonz, lifting its arm in preparation to strike. Suddenly, a dark flash stopped it.

Bonz: Sorry! My Target Zombie stops your attack! | Target Zombie | DARK | Zombie/Effect | * | 0/0 | When your opponent directly attacks you, you can Special Summon this card from your hand in face-up attack position and negate the attack. If this card is still face-up on your field during your next Standby Phase, take 1000 damage. | He gets special summoned and stops your monster!

A dark zombie with crosshair symbols tattooed on its body guarded Bonz with a lopsided and demented smile.

Roran: Then I’ll end my turn!

Hand:

R: 6

B: 6

Bonz: Unfortunately, I now have to pay 1000 life points because my zombie survived.

The purple mist wrapped itself around Bonz’s legs, and some of him seemed to fade away entirely. Neither player spoke, they had both heard of the legendary Shadow Games, and knew how they worked.

LP:

R: 8000

B: 7000

Bonz: I’ll now tribute my zombie to summon Grand Gold Dragon! | Grand Gold Dragon | LIGHT | Dragon/Effect | ****** | 2000/1400 | When this card is destroyed in battle and sent to the graveyard, you can Special Summon one "Festering Zombie Dragon" or a Level 4 or lower Dragon type monster from your Deck. |

In a bright flash of light a majestic dragon appeared and triumphantly roared.

Roran: A dragon? I thought Bonz only used zombies…

Bonz: I know it’s not my usual style, but you’ll soon see why I chose such a creature. Now attack his monster!

The dragon roared and its skin emanated golden light. The grizzly bear lit up like a Christmas decoration before exploding. Roran grunted, as the mist seemed to cut through his body.

LP:

R: 7400

B: 7000

Roran: Now my bear’s effect activates! Allowing me to summon another Mother Grizzly from my deck!

The shattered pieces of the bear’s hologram reformed to bring back the creature.

Bonz: I’ll set one card and end my turn then!

Roran: First off, I’ll tribute my grizzly to summon Sea Drake Serpent! |

A sea serpent appeared, floating in the air. Its skin crusted from the lack of water.

Roran: Then I’ll add Kishido Spirit! | Kishido Spirit | Continuous Spell | Monsters on your side of the field cannot be destroyed in a battle if the monster's ATK are equal. | Now attack my serpent!

Bonz: Your monster will just get destroyed too!

Roran: Oh really?

The serpent dove viciously into attack. As it did, a white mist surrounded it, and it struck down the dragon without a scratch.

Bonz: What?

Roran: My Kishido Spirit protected my monster because its ATK was equal to your monster’s ATK!

Bonz: Well I’ve got a little surprise of my own! Witness my dragon’s true form!

The dragon’s corpse had been quickly decaying the whole time, its skin had turned mouldy brown. Suddenly, its eyes opened and it got up.

Bonz: Meet my Festering Zombie Dragon! | Festering Zombie Dragon | DARK | Zombie/Effect | ******* | 2300/1100 | This card's type is also treated as Dragon. When this card is destroyed, by paying 800 life points, Special Summon it during your next Standby Phase. |

The dragon let out a roar that was rife with the stench of dead flesh.

Zygor: Haha! This is Bonz’s ultimate monster, you don’t stand a chance!

Darius: Roran, you can do it! You’re the best duelist I know!

Roran: Fine! I end my turn!

Hand:

R: 5

B: 5

Bonz: I’ll summon Ash Zombie! | Ash Zombie | DARK | Zombie/Effect | ** | 500/100 | When this card is tributed to tribute summon a Fiend or Zombie type monster, Special Summon it during your opponent's next Standby Phase. |

A grey, fragile-looking zombie appeared.

Bonz: Next I’ll activate my face-down card, Enveloping Stare! | Enveloping Stare | Continuous Trap | Select the face-up monster on your field with the highest ATK of all the face-up monsters on the field. As long as it remains the face-up monster on the field with the highest ATK of all the face-up monsters on the field, it is the only monster your opponent can select as an attack target. | Now my dragon is the only monster that can be attacked because he’s the strongest on the field! Now my dragon, attack his serpent!

The dragon fire miasmic gas out of its mouth, destroying Roran’s monster.

Bonz: And now my zombie will attack you directly!

The monster held out its arm and shot out some flakes of ash, which burned Roran’s skin.

LP:

R: 6600

B: 7000

Bonz: I’ll end my turn by setting a card.

Darius: I know you can do it Roran…

Roran: I activate Hammer Shot! | Hammer Shot | Spell | Destroy 1 face-up Attack Position monster with the highest ATK on the field. (If it's a tie, you get to choose.) | Which destroys your dragon!

Bonz: Not so! I activate Pole Position! | Pole Position | Continuous Trap | The face-up monster(s) with the highest ATK on the field is unaffected by the effects of Spell Cards. When "Pole Position" is removed from the field, destroy the face-up monster(s) with the highest ATK on the field. | Because my monster is the strongest on the field, he’s unaffected by spells!

Roran: Fine! I’ll summon Aqua-Bomb Fish instead! | Aqua-Bomb Fish | WATER | Fish/Effect | *** | 1000/300 | When you Normal summon this card, pay life points in multiples of 100. Increase this card's ATK by an amount equal to the life points paid. This card is destroyed during the end phase. |

A spherical fish with a timer on its side appeared.

Roran: Now by paying 1400 life points, its ATK becomes 2400! (1000 > 2400)

LP:

R: 5200

B: 7000

Roran: Now attack his dragon!

The fish opened its mouth and shot out a high-pressure stream of water, which exploded on contact with the dragon.

Bonz: I’ll activate my dragon’s effect! I pay 800 life points, you’ll see what happens later, hehe…

LP

R: 5200

B: 6100

Roran: I’ll end my turn by setting a card, and now my fish is destroyed.

The fish swelled up and exploded in a burst of water.

Hand:

R: 3

B: 4

Bonz: Now my dragon’s true power activates! He is revived!

The corpse opened its eyes and got back up.

Bonz: Now my Ash Zombie and my dragon, attack him directly!

The zombie began to shoot out ash at Roran while the dragon shot out more miasmic breath. The blow caused Roran great pain as the purple mist took more flesh away.

LP:

R: 2600

B: 6100

Bonz: I’ll leave it at that.

Roran closed his eyes and put all his thought into the draw. It could change the duel completely.

Darius: Roran! Don’t give up now!

Roran drew.

Roran: OK! I’ll start by discarding my Warrior of Atlantis to get A Legendary Ocean from my deck! | Warrior of Atlantis | WATER | Aqua/Effect | **** | 1900/1200 | You can discard this card to the Graveyard to add 1 "A Legendary Ocean" from your Deck to your hand. | Which I’ll now activate! | A Legendary Ocean | Field-Spell | This card's name is treated as "Umi". Downgrade all WATER monsters in both players' hands and on the field by 1 Level. Increase the ATK and DEF of all WATER monsters by 200 points. |

An ocean darkened by the Shadow Game surrounded the players.

Roran: Now for my face-down card! The High Seas LV3! | The High Seas LV3 | Trap | Special Summon WATER monsters from your hand whose combined level(s) equal 3. You cannot Normal Summon or Set during the turn you activate this card. | It lets me summon my Card Bearing Clam, | Card Bearing Clam | WATER | Aqua/Effect | *** | 500/900 | When this card is Special Summoned from your hand, draw two cards. | and my Electric Urchin! | Electric Urchin | WATER | Thunder/Effect | ** | 200/400 | When this card is Special Summoned from your hand, destroy two cards on the field. | So I draw two cards and both your monsters are destroyed!

The two sea creatures appeared and both dragon and zombie were destroyed. Roran drew two cards

Bonz: I’ll pay 800 life points to get my dragon back next turn!

LP:

R: 2600

B: 5300

Roran: Big mistake Bonz!

Bonz: Huh?

Roran: I’m removing all my monsters in my graveyard from play to summon The Water Avatar! | Which gives him 3000 ATK! Direct attack!

Bonz screamed as he was engulfed by a wave of water. The cage holding Darius rose high in the air.

LP:

B: 2300

Roran: Now to finish this! I activate Monstrous Wave! | Monstrous Wave | Spell | Tribute WATER monsters that were Summoned this turn. Inflict 800 damage to your opponent for each monster tributed. | By tributing my three monsters, you take 2400 damage!

Bonz: No! I can’t go back to the Shadow Realm!

Another wave engulfed both Bonz and Zygor, after which they disappeared into thin air. The cage rose high into the air before dropping fast. “Darius!” Roran cried as the holograms disappeared and he ran. The cage melted away in mid-air and Roran caught Darius. “You’re still the best duelist I know.” Darius said, smiling.

A voice suddenly boomed through the air, “You may have defeated them Roran, but I assure you this is not over.” Then the purple mist cleared away and the sun began to rise over the roof of Duel Academy. It was Roran who spoke first, “I don’t have a clue what that was, but let’s just go.” Darius replied with a “Yeah.”
