Skippy Canoe
On another forum, I have a series of Dæmon Days Fan Fics. If you want the link to them, feel free to pm me, but I will never advertise. This is the third of the series, and is posted on both forums. It's partly based on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. What is a Dæmon?
Dæmon Days Volume III - Casey's Regrets]
Prologue] Dæmon Days - Casey's Regrets Casey Asner was a simple sixteen year old girl. All she wanted was friends, and to be happy wherever she was. This all began to change when she went to Bayview High. Casey lived in Miami, Florida, a very dangerous city. Bayview High was a beautiful boarding school, and her room overlooked the ocean. Now, Casey is haunted by her memories from this school. Casey had dark, long, straight hair. She had hazel eyes, and a beautiful smile. Being average height and body weight, she didn't have much to be made fun of for. She had a friendly, but not corky, personality. Her Dæmon was a black and bright cyan Six Plumed Bird of Paradise named Ellenia, Elle for short. Casey was one of those rare people having a Dæmon with the same gender as herself. Casey was sent to Bayview High after her mother passed away and her father joined the Navy, followed by her nanny retiring. Casey was overjoyed at being at this school, but she didn't know what horrorful things would happen to her here. Casey's roomate was a girl named Michelle Olivia. Michelle had a bubbly personality. She had blonde hair and blue eyes. Like Casey, Michelle was average height and weight. Her Dæmon was an energetic red fox named Mintleaf, or Mint for short. Her Dæmon was male, which was usual in female humans. ... After transferring to Bayview High School, Casey made many new friends, and was in a cheerful environment. This all changed suddenly when Mandy Yorkshire mysteriously drowned during swim class. Casey was in this class also, and has been haunted by Mandy's spectre ever since. Ever since this event, Casey has felt isolated among others; even Michelle. Rumors have gone around that Casey did this, since she was the only person that was enemies with Mandy. Bayview High has been a living hell for Casey, and not just because of this unfortunate tragedy.
Chapter 1 - Spectre of Mandy] "Students, this examination will count for thirty percent of your overall grade. Read the questions throughly, double-check your answers, and write in number two pencil," announced Ms. Hagedorn, Casey's geometry professor, in a monotone drone, her owl Dæmon eyeing every student suspiciously. "Hey, Michelle, got a pencil I could use?" whispered Casey to her roommate, whom was sitting one row ahead of her. Michelle began replying, but was interrupted. "Miss Asner, is there something you'd like to share with the rest of the class?" interrogated Ms. Hagedorn menacingly. "Actually, my pencil isn't number two, and I was asking M-Michelle for one," replied Casey shakily. Michelle nodded quickly. "Come prepared next time!" finished Ms. Hagedorn. Casey nodded. "Alright then. I need two volunteers to help pass out test and answer documents," shouted Ms. Hagedorn coarsely. No one volunteered. "Perhaps Miss Asner and Olivia would like to help?" Ms. Hagedorn proposed abruptly. Students giggled, muffled by their cupped hands over their mouths. Casey and Michelle knew not to defy Ms. Hagedorn, so they both rose, followed by their Dæmons. Soon, the documents were passed out, and Ms. Hagedorn rang her irritating bell to begin the test. Casey stared at her document. She had always received high marks in this class, so she didn't have much trouble While Casey struggled on a particularly difficult exercise, she heard a whisper in her ear, and looked up. There stood Mandy, a soaked figure with a menacing expression. Her saturated hair was long and dark, but was styled differently than usual. She had dark brown eyes, and no Dæmon, since she was dead. Mandy didn't say anything, except inaudible mumbles under her steady breath. Casey was used to these visits by now, and simply resumed her exam. "Casey..." Mandy whispered. Normally not being understandable, it was surprising to Casey that she could at the moment. She stared up at Mandy again. "What?" whispered Casey impatiently. "MISS ASNER!" shouted Ms. Hagedorn, nostrils flared. She stomped over to Casey's desk and swiped her test. "GET OUT OF MY CLASSROOM! I WILL SEE YOU TOMORROW!" she screamed. Mandy disappeared. Giggles could be heard in the background as Casey gathered her possessions, and left the room, legs shaking. ... As Casey strolled on her way back to her dormroom, the wind picked up. The wind made noises as if singing. It was a dark, gloomy autumn morning. Suddenly, footsteps echoed through the empty campus. Casey turned around, but saw no one or nothing.
Chapter 2 - Ellena Kroft] Casey rushed to her dormroom very quickly to get ready for her next class. As she gathered her books for her new class starting today, Celestial Studies 101, Casey felt as if she was being watched. As she was about to leave, Michelle opened the door. "What happened?" she asked, concerned. "Oh, nothing. I w-was just talking to Jeff Buler a few rows up," Casey lied. "You're lying. What really happened?" Michelle queried. Michelle could tell when a person was lying as easily as she could tell if it was cold in a room. "Uh, you'll think I'm crazy if I tell you." "Tell me anyway." "Mandy's ghost keeps visiting me, and she was talking to me when we were taking the exam." "You have to be kidding me. You didn't kill her. Why would she cling to you?" "I don't know. I do know that I have to get to class," Casey stated and rushed from the room, leaving Michelle with a confused look. ... Casey had trouble finding her class. Apparently, it was on the roof of the A Building, which was the tallest on campus. Figuring out finally where to go, Casey rushed up several flights of stairs, and nearly ran into a thin woman on the way. The woman turned around, and when she did, it seemed as if everything else had blurred away. The woman had long, white blonde hair, and wore a shimmering navy blue gown. Her Dæmon was a gold finch. Casey interpreted the meaning of her Dæmon, and concluded that the woman was beautiful, and shy but playful. "Excuse me, are you in a hurry?" asked the woman. "Yes, yes, I'm late for my celestial studies class. I gotta go," replied Casey quickly. "Oh? So am I," the woman said. This must be Mrs. Kroft, the professor, Casey thought. "I'm Ellena Kroft, the proffesor for your class, miss. No worries, you won't be marked tardy." Abby smiled, and continued walking with her, exchanging small bits of information, such as her background, family, and age. In what seemed like seconds, they were at the roof of the building, and several students were gathered around Mrs. Kroft. "Settle down, kids. Settle down. Settle!" Mrs. Kroft instructed. Everyone obeyed after her third trial. "Welcome to Celestial Studies 101. Here, you will learn about several astronomical topics. We will study the Auroras, constellations, and Seer Devices. Much more will be covered. This course is very enjoyable, and I hope you agree. Well, let's begin." Casey listened through her lessons. All of it seemed boring, until she introduced Seer Devices. "Seer Devices are devices that can measure paranormal occurences, intercranial activity, or even more. In English, ghostly stuff and stuff in your brain. There ae many that have been made, all having different abilities. A few examples are the Verometer, which measures truth, the Anteometer, which measure the past, the Locometer, which can give locations of people or other Seer Devices on the globe, and can teleport you to them..." Casey was intrigued in these devices, especially the Locometer. She continued listening. "I have one Seer Device in my possession; the Corometer. The Corometer, made in Russia, I have learned, can detect paranormal activity in the area, and find the source. It will give you information in a way I cannot describe. You have to think about it working to activate it, and through your open mind will you only get the information you seek. Does anyone want to try?" Casey eagerly raised her hand first, and was chosen. The Corometer looked like a chain watch, but instead of numbers, there were engraved Cyrillic characters, all representing different paranormal figures. Casey held it open and thought of activating the Corometer. Soon, it started glowing, and Casey looked down. It pointed to a symbol she didn't understand. Mrs. Kroft examined it. "It appears we have a spectre in the area. The soul of a dead person roaming free without passing over," announced Mrs. Kroft. Casey saw Mandy near the fire escape on the rooftop. She was a spectre, according to Mrs. Kroft.
Chapter 3 - Seer Devices] Casey enjoyed the week, and forgot about all the taunting due to Celestial Studies 101. She learned more about the Seer Devices, and the Auroras, and paranormal stuff. Mrs. Kroft had been a great teacher to her. Presently, Casey was in her dormroom with Michelle, researching Seer Devices. "What's the big deal?" asked Michelle. Casey ignored her. Linked to an informational page, she had found a blog by a woman named Abby Moonstone from New Bedford, Massachusetts, whom had quite a following. She read the most recent post. Posted October 24, 2011 (Today was October 29) At home with Miracle. Roger's at work. As you may know, I am in possession of three rare Seer Device, which I found at the Ariolus Dolus Tablinum. That's Latin for "Seer Device Archive," or so my dead companion claimed. : ( There were tons of them in the room. I have the Verometer, a device in which measures truth. Click here to learn about the Verometer. I also have the Anteometer, which tells you about the past, which is kind of like the Alethiometer, which I am not in possession. I also have the Locometer, which can do many things. I once used it to save me from a burning bus. You can locate people or other Seer Devices with it, and teleport to them. If you are extremely close to what you're tracking, it reforms and leads you to it somehow! Amazing, I say. Well, that's all I have to say for now. Bye! Abby Moonstone These Seer Devices fascinated Casey as she read about each one. It reminded her of a children's trading card game, where she would have to collect them all. After several moments of thought and ignorance of Michelle's voice, Casey decided to ask Abby a question. This was the question she posted. Posted October 29, 2011 Dear Mrs. Moonstone, I understand that you're in possession of rare Seer Devices. I am very interested in them, and would like to see them. I would also like to go to the Ariolus Dolus Tablinum. Is there any way I could buy the Seer Devices from you, if you please? Thanks,Casey Asner,Miami, FL,16 yrs. old "That sounds sincere enough!" thought Casey aloud, followed by a groan and rolled eyes from Michelle. ... Later that evening, Abby posted a reply to Casey's message. Posted October 29, 2011 Hello, Casey. Yes, I do possess these. What do you have in mind? I would like to give them to you, since I haven't had any use for them in over a year, since the whole bus thing. Though I am still constantly haunted by my dead friend, Sarah's spectre, I manage to keep sane. ; ) Let's continue this by phone. My cell is listed at the top of this page. You know where to call me to continue this conversation! Now what really intrigued Casey was the fact that Abby is haunted by a spectre, too. She quickly dialed the phone number at the top of the page into her pink cell phone. After two rings, someone picked up. "Hello? Is this Casey?" asked Abby. Her voice was as soft and smooth as velvet. "Y-yes, Mrs. Moonstone. I, I'd really like to have the devices. My Celestial Studies professor has the Corometer, and I was very fascinated by it. I was hoping that you could also lead me to the Ariolus Dolus Tablinum," explained Casey. "Hm, I'm afraid that the Ariolus Dolus Tablinum will be near impossible to find. It's in the ruins of terror-struck Boston, Massachusetts. I stumbled upon it when the ground above it sank in partly." "Oh. Maybe I'll try to find it." "I wouldn't if I were you. Although, I'd be happy to meet you and give you the Seer Devices. Uh, you live in Miami? I've got my hands tied with my children right now. I'm afraid you'd have to come here." "Yes, yes, that's fine!" "Alright then, do get a pen and paper out. My address is 384 Ebner Drive, 29493, New Bedford, Massachusetts. You can find a map online. Please email me when you leave, so I know when to expect you! Bye now!" "Bye, Mrs. Moonstone!" Casey finished and hung up. "Who was that?" Michelle asked while laying on her bed. "Oh, just an old friend from summer camp. She was going to come visit, but she can't now."
Chapter 4 - Massachusetts] "You sure seemed excited, and you aren't on first name terms with your friend?" queried Michelle awkwardly. Casey had to think a bit, and then voiced her reply. "No, I had to talk to her mom, and she gave me the bad news." "Oh really? What's all this about the Corometer and the Ariolus Dolus Tablinum then?" Michelle retorted. Casey shuttered, forgetting that she had said that out loud. "It's none of your business, Michelle." "Yes it is." Casey exhaled nervously. "Tell me now!" "Michelle, it's between me and Abby Moonstone. I just want a closer look at Seer Devices, and she had some. I wanted more information from her about them, and she couldn't meet with me, but was willing to teach me a few things." "Was that so hard?" Michelle taunted. Out of nowhere, Casey punched Michelle in the nose. "I'm so sorry, Michelle!" Casey shouted with her hands over her cheeks. Michelle looked at her, nose bleeding. "No, no, it was m-my fault. I can be annoying sometimes!" Michelle replied awkwardly. She almost seemed forgiving. "No, I'm so sorry! Please forgive me!" Casey cried. "Okay then, I forgive you." Casey exhaled. ... Casey woke up at 4 A.M. from her phone alarm, which didn't stir Michelle. She quickly emailed Abby that she was leaving, and grabbed her already packed backpack. Casey had a plane ticket she purchased online, and was on her way. She had borrowed the Corometer from a trusting Mrs. Kroft. ... Finally, Casey was on her way to Abby's home. It was now 7:42 P.M. Luckily, it was Saturday, so Casey wasn;t missing any school. She took a bus, since she didn't know how to drive. As she approached the Moonstone home with Elle on her shoulder, the door opened, and the barking of a small dog drowned out Abby's voice. "Are you sure about this?" whispered Elle nervously. Casey nodded, and walked up to Abby's porch. "Hey, Casey, you made it! Come on in!" spoke Abby cheerfully. She was introduced to Abby's husband and children, and then taken upstairs to talk in private. They sat on the edge of Abby's bed. "So, I hear you want the Verometer, Anteometer, and Locometer? First, let me show them to you," said Abby sweetly. She pulled three dark-colored velvet pouches from the top drawer of her dresser, one being a dark maroon, one being a dark teal, and one being a dark navy blue. "Which would you like to see first, Casey?" asked Abby. "The Verometer," replied Abby surely. Abby pulled the Verometer from the dark teal pouch. ... After about two hours, Abby had learned all about these devices. "So, Casey, I'd be happy to give these to you. Though, I have a favor to request of you. Let's face it. We both know you plan on going to Boston today," said Abby grimly. Casey had planned on this. "I need you to find the ruins of a burnt bus. If you can do so, call this number and say to call Abby Moonstone at my cell phone number." "Why?" "Don't ask. Just please do so. I trust you, so please take these now. I have to ask you to leave now." Casey was a bit unnerved by her strange behavior, but bade her goodbye, and set off by chartered plane, provided by Abby's husband, to Boston.
Chapter 5 - Terrorstruck] In all the excitement, Casey forgot to ask about Sarah's spectre, whom bothered Abby. ... Finally, Casey was dropped off in the terrorstruck Boston. It seemed as if no one was here, and there was no effort to reconstruct the city. The pilot of the plane circled above Boston, and Casey would give a signal by phone to tell him to land. She didn't expect to be there long. Casey and Elle roamed the streets, but there was no evidence of a burnt bus that they could find. Casey clutched her large shoulderbag to her side, which contained her Seer Devices. She grabbed the Corometer, which was in a dark gold velvet pouch. Wondering what the colors meant, she opened up the Corometer. She then thought of activating it, and the hand began circling around uncontrollably, and landed on no one symbol. It was stupid to have taken this anyway, because she barely knew what the symbols meant. She could only read a few of them, courtesy of Mrs. Kroft. "Casey, I don't think this is a good idea," suggested Elle nervously, digging into Casey's neck with her plumed head. "You're supposed to agree with me. You're my soul. So shut up," retorted Casey dimwittedly. Elle looked away in disdain. Nonetheless, they continued roaming the streets, until they reached the outskirts of Boston. They were roaming down a freeway, and stumbled upon a hubcap for a car-or a bus. Casey's eyes followed a burnt trail of pavement to the remains of what appeared to be a bus. Suddenly, Mandy's spectre appeared in front of them. "C-see,gwabsnw!" she warned. Casey couldn't understand. "What?" she asked Mandy. "Gwabsn. NAO!" she warned again. Casey sounded it out aloud. "Gwa-go away. Go away bissun, no, go away Boston! Now! Why?" "Dinjer! Dinjer head!" "What did you call me?" "Dinjer, HEAD!" Casey began ignoring her, and walked directly through her, followed by Mandy's sudden disappearance. Sarah's spectre could speak fine, why couldn't Mandy? Probably because she drowned, and would have water filling her body, Casey hypothesized. "She said that there was danger ahead, Casey!" shouted Elle, prissily. Casey shrugged Elle off her shoulders, and Elle landed on her other shoulder. Following Abby's instructions, Casey called the number she jotted down, and waited for an answer. "Hello?" answered a woman. "Hello? Oh, right. I am calling to instruct you to call Abby Moonstone at 192-293-3848," reported Casey awkwardly. "May I ask who's calling?" "No." "Is this a joke?!" "No ma'am. Please call Abby. She told me to call you to tell you to call her." "Okay then. I'm gonna hang up now, is that fine?" "Whatever," Casey said and hung up before the woman. Now, she wanted to find the Ariolus Dolus Tablinum. Having the Locometer, she could teleport to other Seer Devices, but she needed to know which ones were in Boston, excluding hers. She first thought of the Alethiometer, which was located in Mount Clemens, Michigan. Next, she tried the Foetusmeter. Mrs. Moonstone had mentioned it somewhere in a different blog post. It was located in Boston, Massachusetts, obviously in the Seer Device Archive!
Chapter 6 - Michelle, Michelle] Casey excitedly focused her mind completely on getting to the Foetusmeter, clenching her eyes shut. When she opened them, she found herself in a grand library, full of ebony wood bookshelves wall to wall. Upon the shelves were precious Seer Devices. Somewhere in the ceiling, Casey noticed a gaping hole leading to the outside world in Boston. This must have been caused by the recent terrorist attacks here. "We shouldn't be in here, Casey!" shouted Elle. "Yes we should. You should be agreeing with me!" retorted Casey pathetically. Casey explored and read plaques, describing each device. Being her disciplined self, Casey decided that she would pick out only one Seer Device that she wanted. She chose the Annuntiometer. It looked like the Egyptian eye symbol, but closed. The eye was embedded in another gold chain watch, which could open and close. The device was encrusted with tanzanite, or some other purple gem, Casey decided. Its velvet pouch was a dark, deep purple. Then she took hold of it, and tried thinking of Michelle, Mrs. Kroft, Elle, Abby, trees, and many other things, but the eye remained inert, staying in its closed state. Casey then used the Locometer to return to Abby's home. ... "Mrs. Moonstone, I called her, did you get a call?" Casey reported. "Yes, Casey. You didn't have to come here," replied Abby, sitting in a posh chair in her and Roger's bedroom. "Well, actually, I found the Seer Device Archive, or the Ariolus Dolus Tablinum with the Locometer. I decided to take one, called the Annuntiometer. It-wait, why did I need to call someone?" "It's between me and my dead companion's family." "There were remains in there?" "You're smart, Casey. You'll do great things. You don't need to be involved with this." "I want to, Mrs. Moonstone." Abby sighed. "Casey, I'm protecting you from this. It's done and happened. You have your own life to care for." "What's that supposed to mean?" "Stay out of my business." "Okay then. The Annuntiometer doesn't seem to do anything," Casey said, changing the subject. She pulled the purple velvet pouch from her large tote bag, and handed it to Abby. "Annuntiometer, you said? My companion was quite fluent in Latin, and I'm taking a class. Annuntio could mean news, or announcement, I think," Abby thought aloud. "News? How does that work?" Casey asked, confused. Suddenly, the Annuntiometer's eye flicked open, and gave off a blinding glare of purple. "Give it to me!" Casey thought about the Annuntiometer's news, and once she did, the eye closed. The Annuntiometer had somehow told her that something occured in the life of the possessor, which was Casey. Casey just wasn't sure what happened. It told her something to do with Michelle. Would it happen in the near future then? "I have to go! Something is going to happen to Michelle!" shouted Casey, whom packed away the Annuntiometer, and retreived the Locometer, bidding Abby goodbye and disappearing in a burst of light. ... Casey appeared in her dormroom with a burst of light. She was a few yards from the wide awake Michelle. She was fully dressed for some reason. "Casey? Explain yourself," Michelle said, as simply as possible. "What? Nothing. At least, none of your business," replied Casey defensively. "I knew it." "You knew what?" "You are the killer! You drowned Mandy!" Casey just thought of the danger Mandy warned her of. Nothing bad happened in Boston. "Wha? Huh? Wh-why?" asked Casey shakily. "It was you all along. I should have known! To tell you the truth, that's why I was so awkward when you punched me. I thought I was next!" explained Michelle. "Are you kidding me?" "No, Casey. I'm going to expose you now." "I didn't do nothing!" Casey stepped towards Michelle, and Michelle backed up towards the window. "Oh, Casey. You disgust me! I loathe you! What a hoax! What did you want? Sympathy? Well, you don't deserve it!" "You're talking crazy! This doesn't make sense!" Casey screamed. She then stepped several steps forward, followed by Michelle receding several steps, too. As she did so, she tripped on a tennis shoe lying on the floor, and burst through the glass window, and plummeted out of their second-story dormroom. Casey ran to the window, and looked below her. There Michelle lay, inert as a stone.
Chapter 7 - Forget Yesterday] "Michelle? Are you okay?" shouted Casey from the window. Michelle said her last words. "Go to hell." "Oh, Michelle!" shouted Casey in horror as a blood puddle formed beneath Michelle's body. Casey then decided it would be a good time to talk to Mrs. Kroft. ... "Casey, what's wrong? It's past midnight!" said Mrs. Kroft, irritated as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes. "W-well, I have four more Seer Devices with me," announced Casey, in a brighter state than she should be right now. "You're hiding something." "How do you know that?" "Your hands are shaking. Tell me what happened." "Forget that! I have in my possession the Locometer, Verometer, Anteometer, and the Annuntiometer." "Oh really? Let me see. I do hope you brought the Corometer back." Casey handed the Seer Devices to Mrs. Kroft one by one, and she examined them. "I see. What do they do?" asked Mrs. Kroft. "Well the Verometer tells you the truth if you ask it something. The Anteometer tells you the past. The Locometer can measure where people are and take you there, but you already knew those. A new one I have is the Annuntiometer. It tells you if something tragic in your life is going to occur," explained Casey quickly. "So the eye opens or something to tell you?" queried Mrs. Kroft. Elle chirped, and Mrs. Kroft's Dæmon nodded, as if saying "I see." "Now tell me what happened," interrogated Mrs. Kroft. "Nothing happened!" yelled Casey. "I won't judge you," said Mrs. Kroft soothingly. "Okay! Michelle, sh-she fell out of our window and died!" cried Casey. "Really? Well we must call the police or something!" shouted Mrs. Kroft. "I'll contact the school paramedics!" "No, let me deal with this!" shouted Casey. "Another rumor will start!" "Casey, no. You didn't do anything. Why should you be scared?" "I-I don't know." Casey quickly bade Mrs. Kroft goodnight and scurried out of the room. ... When Casey returned to her dormroom, there were police stationed in front of her door. "Excuse me? What do you think you're doing?" asked Casey. The officers ignored her, and she opened her unlocked door. There were investigators examining pieces of glass from her window, and people investigating Michelle's body. One female officer approached her. "Casey Asner?" she queried. "Yeah, why?" replied Casey awkwardly. "I'm Detective Claire Mathers. I have a few questions for you," Claire reported. "I didn't do it!" Casey shouted defensively. "I'm not accusing you of anything. I know it was an accident. Just tell me how it happened." "Well, I came home late tonight, and Michelle was wondering what happened. Then she said she thought I killed that Mandy girl that drowned in our pool. Then we started arguing, and she backed away, tripped on a shoe, and fell through the window." "She had to have fallen pretty hard to break that window." "Yeah, she did. Wait, what?" "Casey Asner, we're taking you into custody." "No!" Casey shouted. She then pulled out the Locometer and teleported herself back to the Foetusmeter in the Ariolus Dolus Tablinum. Rummaging through each shelf's contents, she looked for something that could change the past. Wait! She had found something. Casey looked at something called the Deleometer. It just appeared to be a golden cigar lighter of sorts. Deleo sounded like "delete," so maybe it erased someone's memory! Casey quickly grabbed its dark magenta pouch and teleported back to Mrs. Kroft. "Casey? What now?" Mrs. Kroft asked confusedly. Casey grabbed the Deleometer and flicked it open, thinking of Mrs. Kroft and what had happened in the past half hour. As the box opened, a bright light came out and quickly disappeared. Elle tried covering her eyes with her wings. "Casey? What are you doiing here at this hour?" asked Mrs. Kroft oddly. "Sorry to bother you. Here's the Corometer!" she said politely. Mrs. Kroft nodded as Casey left. Next, Casey erased the minds of the police officers all at once, and they left. Casey convinced them that someone broke in through her window, and that she was fine now. Casey called the paramedics to come deal with Michelle. She acted frantic as they took her away. ... The next day in school was even worse than Friday. A rumor had gotten around that Casey killed Michelle. Someone said they heard loud noises coming from their room last night, too. This added to the constant stress of Casey's life. Odd enough, soon school wouldn't matter at all.
Chapter 8 - She Wolf] School went on normally, putting beside the new rumor. Casey was now arriving at her Celestial Studies class several minutes early. "Mrs. Kroft! Guess what? I have four Seer Devices with me!" Casey shouted excitedly. "Sorry about what happened, Casey. So what are they?" Mrs. Kroft muttered. "Well, I first got three that you mentioned in class: the Verometer, the Anteometer, and the Locometer!" Casey explained. "Casey, you don't know how dangerous it is to be carrying these," said Mrs. Kroft as she examined the devices. "I also have the Annuntiometer." "What does it do?" "It tells you when something big is about to happen in your life. The eye opens and glows, and to close it, you have to communicate with it to get the announcement. Weird, huh?" Casey explained. Then the eye flicked open. Casey grabbed it from Mrs. Kroft and focused on the Annuntiometer, and was told the message. "Someone's going to come and take my devices away!" Casey shouted shakily. "How do you know that?" asked Mrs. Kroft. "The Annuntiometer told me!" "Okay then. Would you like me to show these to the class?" "Uh, no." At that moment, a woman appeared in the door that opened up to the roof. Casey quickly shoved the Annuntiometer away as the eye closed. "Hello? I'm Nadia Grenwich. I came here to speak with the principal of this fine school," the lady introduced herself. "You're the principal? I can't believe I didn't know that!" shouted Casey. "Yes, Casey. Nadia, it's nice to see you. State your business," said Mrs. Kroft grimly. "I need to see Casey Asner," said Nadia. "Why do you need to see Miss Asner?" questioned Mrs. Kroft. "Let me reintroduce myself. I'm here to report a Navy-related message," explained Nadia. Casey shuddered. Her father was in the Navy! Casey followed Nadia through several hallways to an old unoccupied office. "What happened?" asked Casey nervously. "I know you have five Seer Devices. Hand them over," Nadia stated firmly. Nadia had bright blonde hair, and somewhat tan skin. She had piercing yellow eyes, that reminded Casey of cat eyes, or wolf eyes. Nadia was tall, and wearing a stunning yellow dress. Her Dæmon was a vicious-looking white wolf. Casey knew what that meant. "What're Seer Devices?" asked Casey dumbly. Elle stared at Nadia's Dæmon nervously, which made Casey's lie obvious. "I know that act. I also know you have the Locometer, Verometer, Anteometer, Deleometer, and Annuntiometer." "Leave me alone! I don't even know what a deli meter is!" Casey shouted. Nadia could see straight through her, which made her extremely nervous. Then, she bounded out of the room. Nadia seemed to float after her, still keeping the same pace as Casey. "Hand them over!" shouted Nadia. Then, Casey stopped and remembered the Deleometer again. She forgot to show it to Mrs. Kroft. Casey swiftly yanked it from her bag, and attempted to erase Nadia's memory. The light flashed, but nothing happened. "I'm a witch. Seer Devices don't work on us," taunted Nadia. She had almost reached Casey. Thinking quickly, Casey pulled out the Locometer and attempted teleporting to the Foetusmeter. "Sorry, it appears I can block the effects of them," taunted Nadia again. Then, Casey ran into a small classroom and locked the door. Just as she did so, a glowing hand shot through the door and unlocked it. Nadia was a witch alright.
Chapter 9 - Nadia's War] Nadia entered the room, in which Casey was hiding in a closet near the back of the room. "Come out kitten!" shouted Nadia. She had some sort of accent, like she was Hispanic or something, thought Casey. Nadia flung open each hiding place in the room with some mystical witch force. Casey shuffled back a little into the closet, and bumped into something jutting out from the back panel. It was a doorknob! "Casey! The Seer Devices aren't safe in hands of yours!" shouted Nadia, whom approached Casey's closet. Casey quickly opened the door and slipped through it, and quietly clicked it shut as Nadia flung open the closet doors. ... Casey was in what looked like the Ariolus Dolus Tablinum, except with shelves lined with large, glowing, colorful gems. Above the door she entered from was a plaque that read "Ariolus Praestigiatrix Tablinum." This meant Seer something Archive. The large room was deserted. Casey explored the shelves. Each gem had a plaque below it. She saw Volito, Bestio Muto, Vicis, and more. This was all in Latin, so Casey could not understand what they said. She grabbed one bright purple gem, which reminded her of the Annuntiometer. The plaque below it said "Flos." Casey didn't know what to do with it. Putting it back, the Flos accidently dropped from her hand and hit the ground. It shattered and disappeared. Then, to Casey's surprise, flowers grew from the ground that was there! Then, Casey grabbed a bag that was a dark purple that had been with the gem, and shockingly there was another purple gem in it! She stuffed the bag into her large tote that she carried everywhere. Casey then examined a white gem titled "Avis." Casey knew this meant bird. Nonetheless, she dropped it on the ground, and a small flock of white birds flew from the area out of nowhere. The gems would make things appear! Eventually, Casey had Flos, Avis, Pomum, which meant tree, Lamia, which Casey was afraid to use, since the gem was a deep red, Stella, which made a star fly out of the gem and up above, and many more. Casey's bag was filled to the brim with Seer supplies. Casey was afraid to return to the classroom. This didn't matter, for suddenly the door at the front of the large room burst open. "I know you're in here!" shouted Nadia. Casey decided now would be a good time to use the Locometer. She crawled onto an empty shelf, and activated the Locometer. It located Mrs. Kroft, and teleported Casey to her. ... Casey appeared on the roof with the other classmates. Fortunately, no one noticed her sudden appearance. "The Aurora has always mystified-Casey, may I speak with you in private?" asked Mrs. Kroft firmly. Casey was led to the fire escape door. "I'm sorry I let you go with her. I should have known!" apologized Mrs. Kroft. "She's a witch!" shouted Casey. "I know she's bad, she tried taking the Seer Devices, didn't she?" "No, she's a witch, as in magical person!" "Uh, okay. I'm sorry Casey, I should've told you, but Nadia is leading an attack on our school that's going to happen today. I need you to be as hidden and secluded as possible. I'm giving you the Corometer. You'd better go."
Chapter 10 - Dæmon Vs. Dæmon] "Today? Why?" asked Casey. War seemed so stupid for today's time. Especially an attack on a Boarding School in Miami by a witch. It all seemed so medieval. "Go. We are having a lockdown drill. This will buy you time to get hidden without any suspicion, especially if the attack takes place soon," explained Mrs. Kroft as an announcement voiced over the intercom about the drill. Casey followed the crowd off the roof, but then made her way back into the deserted hallway full of unoccupied classrooms, soon finding the one in which she hid. Hoping Nadia had given up, Casey snuck back into the Ariolus Praestigiatrix Tablinum. Fortunately, Nadia had left, and Casey explored the shelves in amazement. "Nice try, Casey," boomed Nadia's voice as she appeared in front of Casey. Then, Casey blinked and she was gone. Oh no! she thought, I'm hallucinating! Casey found a small sitting area in one part of the large room, and lounged on a long sofa. She thought bored thoughts, her mind drifting away. Instead of falling asleep, Casey decided to try out some of her Seer objects. She looked at the Lamia, still too afraid to use it. Then, Nadia appeared in a flash of light in front of Casey. "Predictable young gal," spoke Nadia menacingly. In fright Casey tossed the Lamia at Nadia, and from it emerged a female demon. The demon woman looked like a red ghost. She laughed and zoomed at Nadia. Nadia simply waved her hand, and the demon lady disappeared. Then, Casey searched and found Socius, which was a bright gold gem. She never used this one, and thought it would be a good time to. Casey stood up and dropped the gem quickly on the hardwood floor. From this emerged a shining girl. Actually, it was Michelle! Michelle's spectre glared at her, and shot at Nadia as if commanded to. Nadia did the same thing as she did to the demon woman. "Playtime's over. Hand the items over, and maybe I'll spare your life," said Nadia. Casey shook her head. Elle looked frightened, and nudged Casey's ankles. "Casey, darling, it will be much easier, and I won't have to attack your school," explained Nadia. A huge attack over these little things I have? thought Casey. Suddenly, Nadia's wolf Dæmon shot at Elle. Elle tried to fly, but she was anchored with fright. Nadia's Dæmon held Elle down with one paw, and Casey felt horrible pain. "Stop! You're...hurting us," breathed Casey. "Hand them over then," replied Nadia. Then, Elle changed form suddenly into a lioness. She wrestled free from Nadia's Dæmon and returned to her original bird form. Then, Nadia did something unspeakable. She grabbed Elle. Touching someone's Dæmon was the worst offense someone could make. It was like someone was reaching into a part of you, violating every fiber of your being. "Wha? Wha?" was all Casey could say. She was dazed, as if she had just been hit by a semi truck. Then, Casey fainted.
Submit Characters] You can submit a character into the story. bury the year
Choppy sentences, pointless exposition, boring sentence structure, overall blandness... And how do you have a "corky personality?" This doesn't impress me, not in the least. Get a beta-reader.
Skippy Canoe
Whatever. I promise it will get better; that was the prologue, mere background information! I had trouble coming up with this storyline. I had to rush on my last one, because I really wanted to put one on YCM. My last one had the best storyline of the three. Also... Corky: "Buoyant, lively, or skittish." -_-

Thanks for the advice, though. ^_^
RyanAtlus
This is the first time I see a HDM fanfic.I take it that the alethiometre is also a Seer Device?I think Celestial Studies seems a bit of a rip-off from Divination, but that's just my opinions, isn't it? ;) BTW: does the fact that both Casey and her Daemon are females mean she's lesbian? Skippy Canoe
This is the first time I see a HDM fanfic.Yep.I take it that the alethiometre is also a Seer Device?Actually' date=' the Verometer is my version of the Alethiometer, though it's a different thing. ^_^[/b']I think Celestial Studies seems a bit of a rip-off from Divination, but that's just my opinions, isn't it? ;)Yeah. but I wasn't thinking of Divination at all when I came up with the name. BTW: does the fact that both Casey and her Daemon are females mean she's lesbian?Lol no. There are rare people that have this. ^_^ No I don't think it has anything to do with sexuality, since she would have had to be born like that. Btw she is straight. bury the year
Blatant rip-off of the Alethiometer? RAEG. Be original, plz. It's highly boring to expy the canon specialty into your own Sue.
Skippy Canoe
Blatant rip-off of the Alethiometer? RAEG. Be original' date=' plz. It's highly boring to expy the canon specialty into your own Sue.[/quote'] It is original, for the most part. >_> It measures the same thing, but in a different way. In another Fan Fic. I described it as a chain watch with one hand. It had two rows, once including roman numerals, the other letters. Near the top edge of the watch, instead of two rows, there were 3 symbols in one row. One had a roman numeral, one an A, and the other a blank space. How many times the hand revolves decided what row you were going to take a character from, or if a space would be added. It can also transform into a path finding device that leads you places. Yeah, it's confusing. My version basically spells out your answer.
Ģค๓blє
Nice ^.^ You should post the others here! Blatant rip-off of the Alethiometer? RAEG. Be original' date=' plz. It's supposed to be like a spin-off of the original. Pay dues to canon, kiddie. You'll never get out of the sandbox if you don't acknowledge that you have a starting material, and that the rules set up there shouldn't be messed with. Also, the blatant usage of more then one meter ripoffs is a hallmark sign of a Sue, because she obviously can't think of anything more original. And, yes, you might say it's original, but it's almost directly derived from the original, so you can't say it's unique. Try going on a non-meter based direction. Skippy Canoe
I added the Alethiometer in the story as a different device. The different meters are derived from the Alethiometer, but are all COMPLETELY original besides that. And I'm not a girl, so don't call me Sue. >_> I added to the things. The story only mentions the Alethiometer, and nothing else to do with devices, so I built on it to add originality, but relativity to the book. Besides, the book won't mainly be based on that. I'll describe the conflict of each of my stories, which aren't all on YCM. And what's with all these metaphors? Dæmon Days Volume I - The SeveringCameron and Nicole are one of the many children and young adults to be cut from their Dæmons, and try escaping the government agency called the CSP to avoid being severed. This isn't completely original, as in The Golden Compass, severing was a huge theme in it. Dæmon Days Volume II - Moonstone's MiracleFirst of all, Cameron is in this story as a third-ary character, but dies partly through it. Abby Moonstone is the main character here, which is why so little detail is given on her in Casey's regrets. The main conflict in Moonstone's Miracle is that she is pregnant with twins, but one dies in the womb. Then, the alive twin ends up with the "energy" of the dead twin's Dæmon, so Abby is to have a double-Dæmon baby. A lot of people are against this, and tons of people, including her best friend Sarah, chase her across the world trying to kill her and her unborn baby. Sarah is the "dead friend" that Abby blogs about, whom she actually killed when Sarah tried to kill her. Cameron is the "dead companion" she blogs about. Skippy Canoe
Don't call me sweetie, even though I know that was supposed to patronize me or something I can't explain in words. -_^ If you're really fifteen, I'm only two years younger than you. Hmm, very interesting... O.O So you're referring to Casey as Sue or something? And then this whole canon thing... I understand what you're saying if Casey is "Sue," but I didn't completely change the story. I just built on to the whole "meter" thing. That whole part was left in the dark in HDM, so I thought it would be cool, and people would connect with the story in this way. So is "canon" supposed to be the originial story? Clueless... I only use "sweetie" and such with people I'm exasperated with. :/ And canon is the original universe and things within it of the body of fiction that you are deriving your work from. It's okay if you draw from it, but don't try to copy too much. If you go off on your own direction, maybe something less-explored, while still adhering to the basic canon rules, things would work out better. It's hard to explain, honestly. Trust me, I will definitely listen to advice from a fantastic writer like you. ^_^ Yes, that is how I thought of canon. Sorry, I'm a bit slow. ^_^ This is the start. It really will help me in future writings.
