Let's discuss the best grunge band EVER^_^

Honestly, you can say what you want, this is one of my favorite bands of ALL TIME

Lets not get started on the whole "suicide vs murder" thing though, I've started a seperate thread for that
http://forum.yugiohcardmaker.net/thread-158890.html

My favorite songs are Come As You Are, Heart Shaped Box, Lake Of Fire, The Man Who Sold the World, and, of course, Smells Like Teen Spirit, and my favorite album was Nevermind.

Let me list for you now just a few of the many grunge bands better than Nirvana:

Bush

Soundgarden

Pearl Jam

Just to name a few.

Please' date=' Nirvana is so f***ing overrated.[/b']

.frission. has officially won this thread.

Just for the record, Kurt Cobain wasn't a revolutionary guitarist, nor was he anything above the average guitarist. I'm sick and tired of people kissing his ass. ;\

In Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the Top 100 Guitarists of All Time, which I thought was complete and utter sheet, Kurt Cobain was listed as the eleventh best of all time. Are you kidding me? Eleventh best of all time? Really, people? He was above Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhodes, David Gilmour, Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, and a few others. UGH. WTF. [/rant]

In Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the Top 100 Guitarists of All Time, which I thought was complete and utter s***, Kurt Cobain was listed as the eleventh best of all time. Are you kidding me? First of all, anyone who names BUSH as a better "grunge" band than Nirvana deserves to get slapped. Hard.

they are not even "Grunge". That's Green River, Mudhoney, Alice In Chains and the other bands frission listed. Even Hole was more of a Grunge band than BUSH.

botton line: Bush are a f***ing Nirvana Rip-off.

Second of all, NO ONE has called Kurt Cobain a great guitarist in terms of technicality or skill. (RollingStone are a bunch of money hungry dicks, so don't listen to them) The guy could write songs and melodies you woudn't believe. Sure, he wasn't the best live act ever, but that didn't mean he wasn't talented.

Third of all, the guitarist you mentioned have done NOTHING that made an impact on me or other kids on a personal level. I can relate to the "noise" bands like Sonic Youth, Big Black, Nirvana or My Bloody Valentine make (Hendrix also falls in this category). I'm not saying that those guitarist aren't influential, but any numbskull can play "bluesy riffs" or "tap" their guitar strings like Eddie. NO ONE will ever make a guitar sound like Sonic Youth or MbV, because their sound is UNIQUE.

final point: Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney and a few others have NEVER said they were "Grunge". Kurt hated that term, and clearly discribed Nirvana as a "Punk Rock" band. "Nevermind" or "In Utero" did not sound like Grunge AT ALL. Soundgarden was closer to Led Zepplin than anything coming out, and Pearl Jam spend the 90's destroying their image of a "Grunge" band.

botton line: Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc. were NEVER grunge bands. they were marketed as "grunge" because they were from Seattle and dressed like they were homeless.

and no. Don't give me that crap about their earlier records. Nirvana/Soundgarden were both from SubPop (a label in Seattle). Pearl Jam came out with "Ten" in 91', during height of the grunge movement.

You've obviously never talked to any of the kids I know. They put Kurt on such a pedestal like he's some untouchable god and quite frankly I can't stand it. It just flat out aggravates me. Also, I didn't list those guitarists because they're a personal preference because they're not. The only one I listed that I actually like is Santana. I just found it absurd that they listed Kurt above those guys. ;\

And I refuse to argue with you about the whole "grunge" topic because I wouldn't know grunge if it kicked me in the face. I was simply agreeing with .frission. because I also feel that Nirvana are extremely overrated.

The kids you know are probably more interested on consparacy theories and his sucide rather than the music itself. They won't be able to name a Nirvana song other than "Teen Spirit", "Heart Shape Box", or "Lithium". I can't stand it either.

I don't know if you ever read anything on Kurt's personal live, but he HATED when people referred to him as a "god". That's one of the things that drove him into sucide. He just sang about what he felt, and a bunch of kids just happen to feel the same way (the "Kids" I'm talking about are now middle age adults like English teacher).

In their time, Nirvana wasn't overrated (I know right?) there was very little else to get excited about before they came on to the mainstream. They opened alot of doors for underground bands to get into the mainstream.

Nirvana is only overrated because Kurt shot himself at the height of his career. Simple as that. I feel that the sucide as tainted the sound of the music itself, and its really sad when that happens.

the same thing happened with Michael Jackson. Nobody gave a sheet about Michael, but when he died, record sales went up and everybody started saying they were a Michael Jackson fan. (they weren't saying that during the "trials" though).

overall, It wasn't Nirvana's intent to be successful or influential, they just happen to be at the right place at the right time.

You've definitely got a point there, bro.

Also, I'm about to win this topic right now:

Everyone, no matter who they are or how much/how little talent they possess, becomes 100x more famous after their death. I dare you to disagree with me.

Heath Ledger, Dimebag Darrell, Michael Jackson, Kurt Cobain, etc. Their popularity skyrocketed after their deaths.

Nirvana sure was great... (and BTW, my fav songs of Nirvana are Negative Creep, Lithium, Stay Away and Something In The Way), but I think Alice In Chains is better... and Stone Temple Pilots too...

And Kurt Cobain sure wasn't one of the best guitarists in the world... still he had talent.

Yeah. Isn't that what I just said?

they were famous before, but it sucks when you consider somebody of a "higher being" when they die.

sense you brought up Ledger, I must say that if he wasn't dead when "The Dark Knight" came out, people wouldn't be d***-riding his performance on that movie so much. Sure, his performance was great, but come on people!!!

EDIT: This does not happen with every celebrity that dies, though.

*cough* David Carradine *cough*.

People like Cobain and Jackson got huge coverage on their deaths because of their celebrity status. The death of Layne Staley was a huge loss for music, but was largely overshadowed by Cobain's because they were both on the same "grunge" wagon. (mind you, Staley's death happened 8 years later after Kurt's).

so yeah, it really depends. Kurt will always get notoriety for his death because he was the first, he was really famous, and it was a suicide (and the media LOVES suicide).

....so, let's talk more about Nirvana?[/topic]

Pearl Jam is awesome. No one's grunge anymore because it's dead.

In Utero is my favorite one. It's a really harsh record, but still has some of the best songs Kurt has ever written. Not a single bad song in there, at all.

even the B-Sides to that record are awesome.

EDIT: anyone else looking foward to "Bleach" being Re-released? I'm hoping to get my gritty little hands on the double vinyls :)
