Brendan's Thanksgiving Story

At Brendan's house on Thanksgiving day, everything smelled fantastic! The grown-ups were in the kitchen filling the best china dishes with all sorts of yummy Thanksgiving food. In the spirit of sharing, every Thanksgiving Brendan's family made a big turkey dinner to eat with special friends.

All of a sudden the doorbell rang. It was Jacob, one of Brendan's favorite people. "Come in!" Brendan said excitedly. "Dinner's almost ready!" "I've brought mints," Jacob said, smiling, holding up a dish of great-looking mints. And sara has made choclate," Brendan said. This is going to be great!

Dinner was terrific. The turkey and stuffing was especially good this year. But, the big question every year at Brendan's house was: "Who will share the wishbone?" This year was no different! "Me, me!" Brendan and Jacob pleaded. The grown-ups smiled. sara nodded and said, "Go ahead you two!"

Brendan and Jacob were given the wishbone. Each grabbed one end and pulled. All of a sudden, the wishbone slipped from their fingers and flew into the air! From nowhere, barny appeared and grabbed the wishbone! Everyone jumped up! The grown-ups started shouting: "Get it!" "Grab the bone!" "barny can't eat that!" "Bones aren't safe for pets!" Chairs fell over and dishes almost crashed to the floor as everyone tried to catch barny. barny loved all the attention and ran happily around the room, slipping away each time someone got close!

Finally, sara caught barny and got the wishbone away. "Whew! Here it is," sara said, holding the wishbone in the air for all to see. Oh no! It was broken! For a moment, everyone was silent. "Well," sara said, starting to laugh. "It looks like barny gets to make the wish this year! I hope it's a good one!" Then, everyone laughed and applauded. "More pie!" Jacob said.

This is a Thanksgiving to remember always, Brendan thought, looking around at all the happy faces. Brendan would always remember this Thanksgiving as "barny's Thanksgiving Wish!"

Brendan 's Halloween Story

One spooky Halloween night, Brendan went trick or treating dressed as a Wizard, Brendan 's favorite halloween costume. "Where is Jacob?" Brendan wondered unhappily, tired of waiting. "Jacob is late, and I can't go trick or treating alone!"

Just then, a bush near Brendan started to move! The leaves trembled and a cry rang out. Brendan was frightened but bravely said, "Who's there?" Suddenly, a Ghost jumped from behind the bush! The Ghost shouted, "Boo! Guess who!" Brendan knew who it was right away and said, "Jacob, you silly thing. You scared me! Where have you been all this time?"

Laughing, Jacob said, "You're a scaredy cat! Sorry I'm late, but there was a problem with my costume and I couldn't meet you sooner. Let's go trick or treating. There'll be no candy left for us if we wait any longer." "That's okay," Brendan said. "Let's get started. I want some Halloween candy tonight!"

Brendan suggested they go east first. Several houses looked promising that way, and Brendan remembered that the folks in one particular house gave out great candy and were fun to visit. However, just as they started walking, Brendan and Jacob heard a scary howling noise. "What's that?" Jacob said, shivering. All of a sudden a black cat ran out from under some bushes very close to their feet. The cat streaked in front of them, running very fast across the lawn. Frightened, Brendan and Jacob screamed in terror! Nothing else was in sight, and all was quiet. "It's only a silly old cat," Brendan said. "It won't hurt us." Jacob said with a nervous laugh, "I guess we're both scaredy cats!" "I guess we are!" Brendan agreed, laughing, too. "But let's get going. We'll never get any Halloween candy unless we knock on some doors tonight."

Their hearts still pounding a little, Brendan and Jacob walked along the street. The first house they came to was creepy-looking and very old. It sat back from the street more than the other houses in the neighborhood. A long sidewalk lead up to a front porch that looked like it had seen better days. In the moonlight, the house looked deserted, but lights glowed through the windows. Jacob whispered, "I think I remember somebody telling me that this house is haunted." "No way," Brendan said, confidently pushing open the gate. Suddenly, a strong gust of wind rustled the leaves of the willow tree standing nearby and a loud crash came from the porch. Both friends jumped at the noise. "It's just the wind," Brendan said a little shakily. Although Brendan and Jacob felt a little nervous, they walked slowly through the creaky front gate and up the long sidewalk towards the front door.

The old stairs creaked as they climbed onto the porch. Lying on the floor of the porch they saw a broken flower pot. "That's what made the loud crash we heard," Brendan said. "See? There's nothing scary here." "Yeah, right," Jacob said, "Go ahead, Brendan . You knock on the door."

Just then Brendan and Jacob saw a large, strange shadow behind the wavy glass in the front door. Suddenly, the shadow started moving towards them! Before they could knock or even think, the door flew open! A large Spirit stood before them! Brendan and Jacob shouted and jumped back with a start! Jacob turned to run away.

"Wait! Happy Halloween Wizard and Ghost!" the large Spirit said, laughing. "Great costumes! Don't you two want some candy?" Jacob said, "Hey, I remember that voice! I know who you are! You're Sara!"

Sara said, smiling. "That's right, and you're Jacob. Welcome to my house. You and Brendan are my first guests tonight. How about some treats?"

A little while later, Brendan and Jacob called out "Thanks! Bye, Sara!" as they walked down the sidewalk, their trick or treat bags full of Halloween candy. Jacob said, "Brendan , you knew all along that was Sara's house, didn't you!" "Yes, I knew. The trick is on you!" Brendan said. "Sara is a friend of my folks and I've been to that house before. You know it isn't safe to trick or treat at a stranger's house, so that's why I suggested going there." "That's right," Jacob said. "It's better to be safe than sorry!"

So, that Halloween night Brendan and Jacob had a great time trick or treating. And they followed all the safety rules to make it home safely, too. "I can't wait until next year!" they said together, smiling big smiles. Then Brendan and Jacob walked home, happily planning their costumes for next year all the way.

Lifes work

Once upon a time...

there was a Peasant's daughter called Yasmine who lived in a hut in the shadows of a great black mountain. The hut was very small and very cold, because the Peasant was very poor and his wife spent every penny he earned on cakes and trifles and wine.

One winter's day, the Wicked King came to the hut and called upon the Peasant to come out.

'I have come for my rent,' King Simon informed the Peasant.

'Please, sir,' the Peasant begged the King. 'I have no money left to pay you. May I pay you next month?'

'Certainly not!' King Simon said angrily. 'If you cannot pay me now, I will take your daughter instead. She will make a fine wife for my son.'

'No!' Yasmine sobbed, for the Wicked King's son, the Ugly Prince, was a foul and evil man.

King Simon paid Yasmine no mind. 'I will return in one week for my money or your daughter,' he informed the Peasant. 'If neither is forthcoming, I will send my soldiers to remove you from this place.'

________________________________________

After the Wicked King Simon had left, Yasmine could not stop crying. She did not want to marry the Ugly Prince, but if she refused, her family would have nowhere to live. For she knew that her father was too poor to pay the King.

'Oh!' cried Yasmine. 'What can I do?'

Just then, a single tear fell from her cheek and landed upon a Dirty Brown Hen pecking at the ground, and all at once the Dirty Brown Hen changed into a Golden Peacock.

'You must go to the Starmaker's palace at the top of the mountain,' the Peacock said to Yasmine. 'You must sing for him, and he will make you rich beyond your wildest dreams.'

'But I cannot sing,' Yasmine said.

The Peacock spread its golden tail and shook it briefly at Yasmine, and then, with a final flutter of its beautiful feathers, it was gone. And when Yasmine opened her mouth and sang, it was the sweetest sound you've ever heard.

'The Peacock was right!' she cried happily. 'I can sing!'

And so Yasmine set off up the great black mountain to find the Starmaker's palace. The mountain was steep and treacherous, and there were thick dark forests where wolves and goblins and all manner of frightening creatures dwelled. But Yasmine sang to herself as she travelled, and the beauty of her voice sent all the wild beasts to sleep.

After some time, she came upon a Mysterious Goblin who was munching on berries from the Lie Bush and spinning wool.

'You sing very well,' the Goblin said to Yasmine with a mysterious smile. 'I think I shall make you my wife, Alice, and you will cook Lie berry pie for me forever.'

And with a sudden spring, he spun his wool around Yasmine's ankles so that she could not escape.

'My name's not Alice and I will not marry you, you vile thing' she said to him. 'I am going to sing for the Starmaker, and he will make me the richest girl in the world. And then I will not have to marry anyone'

The Goblin laughed. 'You will never meet the Starmaker. I have trapped you here and will only let you go if you guess my name from my riddle. And it is unguessable.'

'Tell me your riddle,' Yasmine declared, 'I know I can solve it'.

The Goblin recited his riddle in a singsong voice:

"My first is in sugar and also in sweet,

My second's a legume, tasty to eat,

My third is myself, my fourth's an old chick,

My fifth's in an apple and also a brick,

My sixth just repeats what my fourth said above,

My seventh's a thousand, you will be my love,

My eighth's simply fifty, my ninth is a breeze,

If you follow my meaning you'll find it with ease.

My whole is a strange name, of that there's no doubt,

But though berries may lie, the truth it will out.

You may call me a thing but I swear I'm a man,

Now come and find me. That is, if you can."

Yasmine thought for a moment. 'What an odd name,' she thought to herself, 'though it does describe him rather well.' She spoke the Goblin's name aloud. He howled, and let her go.

Yasmine said "I've never even liked the taste of Lie berry, thing!" and ran off up the mountain.

________________________________________

After running and running through the thick dark forests, Yasmine came at last to the Walls of the Starmaker's Kingdom. The walls were high and made of stone, and the only way through them was by means of a great wooden gate.

The gate was guarded by a Wily Sorcerer.

'Do you wish to enter the Starmaker's Kingdom?' the Sorcerer said to Yasmine.

'Oh, yes,' she replied.

'Then you must solve a riddle,' the Sorcerer said.

'But why?' cried Yasmine.

'For only the wisest may enter the Starmaker's Kingdom,' the Sorcerer answered, gazing into her eyes. 'That is why. Now listen, here is my riddle: If you are six feet away from the gate to the Starmaker's Kingdom, and with every step you take you move half the distance to the gate, how many steps will it take for you to reach the gate?'

As Yasmine looked back at the Sorcerer, she thought of her mother and father, shivering in the cold of winter, and she thought how sad she would be if she were married to the Ugly Prince ...

And, with those thoughts in mind, she said to the Sorcerer, 'I will never reach the gate. For if I only move half the distance with every step, then I will always have half the distance remaining no matter how small the number.'

'You are, indeed, wise enough to enter the Starmaker's Kingdom,' said the Sorcerer, moving to one side. 'You may proceed.'

And, step by step, Yasmine walked through the great wooden gate and entered the Starmaker's Kingdom.

________________________________________

When she came to the Starmaker's palace, a wonderful golden building at the top of the mountain, the Starmaker was waiting for her. He was a stern old man with long white hair and a shiny silver cape.

'Sing for me,' he demanded.

Yasmine sang, and her voice was as golden as the palace itself.

The Starmaker nodded his head in approval. 'Do you wish to become rich beyond your wildest dreams?'

'Oh, yes!' replied Yasmine.

'Then you must stay here for ever,' he said. 'You must stay with me in my palace and never set foot beyond the door. You must obey me at all times. And you must never again speak to anyone else. Do you understand?'

'But what about my poor mother and father?' Yasmine said.

'I will see to it that they keep their home,' the Starmaker assured her. 'But only if you agree to my terms. Your mother and father will be safe, but you can never see them again.'

Yasmine thought for a long time, trying to decide what to do, and eventually she said to the Starmaker, 'I will do as you say.'

Epilogue

The Starmaker kept his word. He invited Kings and Queens from all around the world to hear Yasmine sing, and she did indeed become very rich. She wore fabulous dresses and the finest gold jewellery, and she ate the richest food and slept in the softest beds. But it did not make her happy. For the Starmaker was a charmless man, and he worked her very hard and treated her very harshly. But, worst of all, Yasmine had no one to talk to. She had no one to share her riches with. And although her father was very poor and her mother very greedy, she began to miss them terribly. And after a while she became so forlorn and miserable that she completely lost her mind. And early one morning, while the Starmaker was still sleeping in his bed, Yasmine chopped off his head with an axe and ran away back to her poor little hut in the shadows of the great black mountain.

Where she regained her mind and lived, not quite happily, ever after.

My 1st story

Once upon a time about a month ago in the woods behind my house. I was out for a walk when I realized that someone was watching me. You have probably had that experience before. I felt nervous and upset, and I knew that soon I would have to make a decision. My friend Matt had called me the previous day, and told me all about Jason's problem with his father, and I was a little worried about him. Then, all of a sudden, I saw creeping towards me what I realized was a snarling wolf, and right then I knew I was in trouble! I remembered what my father had told me about a situation like this. It was very important that I not look worried. Because the Wolf won’t attack me so I Very calmly, I picked up a big stick and knew I would do the right thing. Before I knew it, I was alone, and I discovered that I was happy. So you see, I really learned something, and I decided I had to tell you all about it.

My Visit to the Rainforest

A short work of fiction by Brendan Hughes

Last year my best friends Kieran, Jacob, and I went to visit the rainforest! This was our first visit to the Amazon and we were excited! We started our trip in Iquitos, Peru, and took a boat down the Amazon River to our lodge.

When we first walked in the rainforest the first thing we noticed was that the trees were very tall, and the canopy was very thick. We could hear lots of birds, but they were hard to see. All of a sudden, there was a sloth!

The sloth was sitting in a branch of a cecropia tree, a tall tree with big leaves. Our guide said that the leaves of the cecropia tree are a sloth’s favourite food! Then, in the under story, below the canopy, we heard a high humming sound. A brightly-coloured hummingbird flew right up to Jacob's red jacket! Our guide Marguerite said that hummingbirds usually pollinate red and orange flowers, and so was attracted to anything red. .

As we walked further along, looking for things on the forest floor and in the under story, we saw a beautiful green butterfly. Marguerite said that green butterflies usually sat on bright green leaves so that they would be harder for birds and lizards to see.

As we walked along through the rainforest, I heard something in the canopy overhead and felt something on my shoulder. Our guide laughed, and said - 'they got you!' 'Who got me?', I asked. 'The monkeys', she said - 'they are either mad at you or scared, and lots of times when people walk underneath them, they get pooped on!' I couldn't wait to change my shirt!.

I leaned against a tree, and realized that there was a small hole next to my hand. There were lots of tiny little bees going in and out of the hole. Our guide said these were tube bees - that they made honey but didn't sting. I still started watching where I put my hands!

We had dinner, and as I was walking back to my room, I reached out to touch a vine - and it moved! Marguerite laughed and said it was a good thing it wasn't poisonous. It was a vine snake, which hides in plain sight by looking just like a vine!

We went out after dinner for a night walk in the rainforest. We asked Marguerite if we would see any Jaguars. She said that jaguars, being cats, could see us and hear us far better than we could see or hear them, and that about the only time she ever saw a jaguar was if it was running across a road way up in front of her.

We had a wonderful time in the rainforest, and can't wait to go back! Maybe we will see you there next time!

resposnsibillity

Once upon a time there was a little boy called brendan. brendan had always wanted a puppy. A lot of his friends had puppys or choclate labradours as pets, and brendan so longed to have a cuddly thing of his own to take care of and to play with. brendan's mother was very strict though. She couldn't always be home with brendan all the time because she had to work at her job at the system hygeinics, so she didn't want to take on the extra work of having a puppy in the house. brendan begged his mother to let him have one and promised faithfully that he would feed it and take it for walks every day. But his mother thought he was too small to have another live thing to take care of. She was worried that brendan might not remember to give it water or feed it, so she told him that he would have to prove that he could be responsible before she would let him have a puppy. One day brendan was in the local toy store and saw something new. It was a little keychain with a screen. It had buttons on it, and when you pushed the buttons a little figure came on the screen and danced about. brendan laughed out loud at the antics of the little figure. It looked like a tiny dinasaur. The key chain was only a few pounds, and brendan knew that he had that much saved up from his last birthday. The next day brendan took all his savings ... and went back to the store. brendan carefully counted out the amount to buy the little dinasur and hurried home with his new pet. Reading the directions on the box brendan knew he first had to set it by pushing a button at the back. brendan used a pencil with a sharp point. The little key chain made a very funny noise and the figure of a big dinausaur ran across the tiny screen. There was a loud plurp...and the dinausar laid a huge egg! brendan sat mesmerized as the picture of the egg rocked back and forth. Maybe there was something in it he though excitedly. brendan kept the key chain in his pocket all day, and suddenly he heard another plurp. brendan looked at the screen and saw the tiny figure of a baby dinasaur had hatched from the egg and was dancing about. brendan clapped his hands in delight. This could be his new pet. brendan named the new cyberpet chi and experimented with the buttons and found that there were buttons to press to feed his dinasuar..buttons to press when chi wanted to play or be read a story..buttons to press when it wanted to take a shower or just be cuddled..and buttons to press when it wanted to put on its pyjamas for bed. When it wanted to go to sleep it would come on the screen wearing a pair of dark sun glasses! brendan was so happy. brendan fed his pet, read it a story, gave it a shower, played with chi every day and put it to bed at night. The dinasaur grew big. brendan had been taking care of it for 12 days..it was very happy, and brendan was very happy too. That morning brendan's friends Jacob and Kieran came to get him to play rugby. brendan hurried out with them and forgot all about his pet dinosaur on the key chain. The dinasuar awoke and a sound came from it that said it wanted to be fed. brendan was nowhere around. The dinasaur made another sound asking to be played with. Nobody came to play with him. Later there was another as the little dinasaur asked to be fed once again, or to be read a story. He was so unhappy and very hungry and he need to to have his diapers changed and to be bathed. brendan stayed out with Kieran and Jacob and the rest of his friends all day. brendan team won the rugby game and brendan was tired and happy when he returned home. brendan saw his key chain cyber pet where he had left it that morning on the coffee table, and thought he would give it some food. brendan pressed the button to get the food picture on the screen, and a picture came up saying that the little dinasaur had gotten sick because nobody had fed it, or cleaned it or changed its diapers. The message said that the baby dinasuaur had died. brendan was so unhappy. brendan hadn't meant to go off and not feed his pet, and not take care of it. brendan just forgot. It was only one day. When brendan's mother came home he told her what had happened and said that maybe she had been right all along to not let him have a puppy because he had forgotten to take care of his little cyberpet and it had died. brendan's mother said that the important thing was that brendan learned from this experience, and she could see that brendan realized he needed to be more responsible in taking care of a pet because it couldn't do things for itself like feed itself and clean itself. brendan knew he could just reset his cyberpet and get a new egg and a new baby dinasaur, but he waited several weeks before he did reset it. When the new pet came brendan carried it everywhere with him, and always remembered to take care of it. Even when he went to play rugby he would make sure his dinosaur had eaten and been cleaned and was happy until he returned. brendan's pet grew and grew and was very happy. brendan's mother was very impressed by brendan's new responsibility. The following july on the day brendan turned 11 years old all the family chipped in to buy brendan a real live puppy which he called titi. Even thought brendan now had a real live pet he still took care of his little cyber pet in the key chain and never forgot him ever again. The End.

Tiger attack run by Brendan Hughes

Once upon a time there was a young boy named Brendan. Brendan was 11 years old and lived in England, UK. While walking home from school one day, a green Bengal tiger jumped out from behind a wall and tackled Brendan to the ground. But just when he was about to let out a scream for help, Brendan realized that the green Bengal tiger was only licking his face, not trying to bite it off. At that moment, Brendan decided to keep the green Bengal tiger as a pet. And on the way home he decided to name his pet green Bengal tiger ''Jacob.'' When Brendan and his new pet finally got home, guess who was standing on the front porch? That's right; it was Brendan's mother, Tina. And boy was she surprised to see a green Bengal tiger following Brendan into the yard! ''What in world is that?'' shouted Tina. ''It's a green Bengal tiger,'' answered Brendan. ''Dah, I can see that, Brendan, but what on earth is it doing here?'' said Tina. ''It's my new pet!'' answered Brendan. ''Oh you think so do you?'' remarked Tina. ''I wouldn't get your hopes up. You know how your father hates green Bengal tigers. But, well, I suppose you can keep him until your father comes home.'' And with that Brendan grabbed Jacob by the scruff of the neck and led his new pet into the house--even though he knew his father was probably going to disapprove. Once in the house, Brendan and Jacob played and played, that is until Brendan's favourite television show, ''dinosaur king,'' started. At that point Brendan forgot all about Jacob having an unsupervised run of the house. That is until half way through ''dinosaur king,'' when Brendan was brought back to reality when he heard his father shout, ''come!! Brendan! Get your but in the kitchen...NOW!!'' With that Brendan rushed into the kitchen to see what all the fuss was about. When he entered the kitchen, there stood his father, Simon, pointing toward the gold sofa. ''Will someone please explain that?'' asked his father. Then, as Brendan followed his father's finger to where it was pointing, he instantly knew what his father was so upset about. There, smack dab in the middle of the gold sofa, was the biggest pile of Bengal tiger doo-doo he had ever seen! ''I don't EVEN want to know how that got there,'' said Simon. ''But you had better get it cleaned up now! And you had better get rid of whatever it is that could have done such a thing!'' Well, knowing his father as well as he did, Brendan knew there was no sense even asking his father if he could keep Jacob for a pet. So without hesitation, Brendan set out to find where Jacob was hiding. After a few minutes of looking, Brendan discovered Jacob crouched beneath the table that Brendan did his cycling on. ''Come on, Jacob, it's time to find you a new home. And hey, don't look at me that way, I'm not the one who did the dirty deed on the gold sofa!'' scolded Brendan. ''Thanks to you I'll never get to have my own pet Bengal tiger!! And with that Brendan led Jacob out of the house and down to the local Bonners. They had a pet section and Brendan knew the owner would find Jacob a good home. So after saying good-bye to jacob, and thanking the owner of Bonners, Brendan walked backed home and attempted to drown his sorrows by slamming down a half dozen s. But Brendan's pity party came to an abrupt end when his father reminded him about the mess he had neglected to clean up. And low and behold, midway through the clean-up, Brendan suddenly became thankful that someone else was going to have to do it from now on. The End.
