Lemniscate
Just a bit of practice on brand identity stuff. This time an imaginary sumo wrestling dojo, with a generic name.I am really looking for thoughts on typeface, and branding. The typeface used for this is Font Shui, if you have a better one, please PM me. Anyway, cnc.
TVL
I don't really think it's cool enough to get away with the whole "simple is better" concept. But that's just me.
Lemniscate
Care to throw in a few specifics, such as what can be changed to make it better?
TVL
It's just not an awesome enough idea to be that simple. Its a circle, with two rectangles and a black thing on top which I guess is supposed to be his hair. I can see how it's a sumo dude, but when I look at it I see an MSPaint style project that's a circle, two rectangles, and a black thing on top. You need to create a more effective design to sell the illusion in a way that will catch on.
Lemniscate
It is designed to be simple, work for web and print, and be able to work in a variety of scenarios, professional, commercial, etc.I don't see how it fails to meet any of those criterion, I can understand personal dislike of the design, but it seems memorable enough to me.I don't know, I may be wrong in that respect, and if I am, I am. Also, MS paint would make a much choppier design than this.
-DG-
It's funny that a 1 star member is criticising so harshly xD Anyway, teh concept is nice, but, for a more traditional sumo hair look, add a band, I guess red, to the hair so that it looks held up. Also, adda gradient or something to the head. It'll look better.
TVL
I have more stars than you believe sir. I understand the simple, slim dynamic that you're going for, however, in this particular piece, the simplicity just comes off as unprofessional rather than cleaver. And on the stars point, I am assuming either:- Double Account- D-d-d-d-d-double Account- etc.
-DG-
Oh Okay ^_^ I can see it on the B/W now. for font, I recommend a japanese-stlye font called yorsat. Try it out. It's available on dafont

I think the main problem is it's not unified. The benefit of the flatness of these vectorish things is that the whole thing blends together very nicely as it looks almost hand drawn in its simplicity. However, this loses out on the charm because the eyes kind of stand out from the rest of the piece, and the colors are too bright to be very vectory. I'd try flattening it out a little. Lemniscate
I was actually intending to smartass you with some sickeningly moral statement like "it's not the stars that make the member" etc. But I'll spare you. You seem to believe that you should be given the same respect that an older member does right off the bat, right after joining. It's not about prejudice based on stars, or anything of the sort, it's about the fact that you haven't been here long enough to earn respect. Yes, respect has to be earned. I have been here for over a year, and I didn't become a well-known and respected member in less than a month. To think that your comments and thoughts should be given the same level of weight when hardly anyone on the site knows who you are, what your experience is, and what (if any) you ulterior motives in posting something are, is unrealistic, just wait, it will happen eventually. But back on topic, I understand your concern on the vectorish-ness of this piece being mangled by the colors, but I sincerely disagree. The eyes were intended to show that it was sumo, if I put some sort of eyes, that weren't inherently asian in styling, people may not have understood what the company is just by looking at the logo. You'll remember, you said that the first thing you thought when looking at this was "sumo", that is exactly the point, a logo is supposed to be memorable, but it is also supposed to convey an idea, and to illustrate what the company does. In this case, is shows very clearly that the company is question is a sumo dojo, any person upon seeing it can understand that, and that it where this design succeeds. -DG-
TVL, if you were a member before, you just lost all your respect by breaking one of the top rules. Stars matter in the sense that they indicate that you've been here for a while, so you become better known. Now, about you being a smartass, if you do, you can GTFO. Taiga, I'd suggest a chinese character, probably sumo, should go with it somewhere for some reason.
Lemniscate
This is a logo, of course the Chinese character can go in the printing itself, but I want to keep the logo as simple and clean as possible. Also, can I get a link to the font? I am having trouble finding it. Finally, why do you still call me Taiga?
staticrevenger
TVL is probably a double accounter not because he knows his gfx, but he joined a yugioh card forum to go to the gfx section which pales in comparison to that of a site intended for gfx, like planet renders. That isn't YCM's fault, as YCM is not intended solely for gfx. But that's not the point. Obviously he knows his stuff, double accounter or not, so his opinion should be considered just as an opinion from an experienced member is. From what I've seen he's been offering relatively helpful comments in comparison to most others in this section including myself. Ok thats enough for my rant ^_^" I think your piece is a bit too simple frission. maybe adding some simple shapes like circles, and then gaussian blurring them to imitate simple shading would look cool. TVL
YCM may not be known for Graphics, but it is known for trolling. You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. Except for 4chan, and places like that are trolled so thoroughly it's pointless to go there. It's good to meet some intelligent people though. I'm slightly curious as to how it would look if the rectangles were narrowed slightly, just a thought. I understand the concept, but when I see the eyes, I still think "rectangles". I think there's just a tiny gap between the concept and my instincts that distances me from the piece, it technically seems like it should be right, but there's always an adjustment I find myself making. I must admit though it has grown on me, it seems as though you shaded it, but it took me a while to get the concept ingrained in me, which shouldn't be happening for something so simple in my opinion. Prada
You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. STAR WARS. =P I like how you came here and started to give correct CnC, then members state things about your stars and how you're a duplicate. You're a kickass. ;D Anyways, yah. I recommend making the rectangles smaller. I agree with TVL. They just seem like rectangles to me. ;/

TVL
The band is a definite improvement because it shifts the focus up more towards his head so he seems less circle-y, although the band does seem very rectangle to me as well. It's not like, a tremendous improvement, but it makes it feel more complete.
Kizzi
The black bits aren't distinctive enough and need to be larger IMO.

Lemniscate
The black bits aren't distinctive enough and need to be larger IMO. I already made them smaller, because people were saying they needed to be smaller. Making them bigger again would just make it worse. Also, TVL, what shape would you then suggest making the headband?
