No it's different from the other two by a good amount. The reasons why should be obvious.

 

forgot adding 10 new characters, impoving the graphics to that of the original Xbox, 25 new items, more crappy never should have been made pokemans, and improving the combat a tick because of the graphics. makes brawl so much more different than the 2 originals, im sorry.

 

who would have thought button mashing, the same 3 buttons for all 3 different systems, just to push Mario off a 2D map would be so original... all 3 times.

I'm not just talk about that. I'm talking about things like the physics of the game. The advance techniques you can use, the way the stages themselves have changed (ie: Their smaller), and even changing the way some attacks work. Yea at it's core it's the same, but when you play them you can feel the difference.

 

If they were the same game with just more stuff then if your a pro in Brawl you'll be a pro in Melee and that just isn't the case.
