Perfect World Review

I'm doing this as per, OMGAKITTY's request. And I was a very avid PW player until recently.

First Look

- Perfect World is one of the very few free MMORPGs currently hosted by its own company, which many other free MMO's usually host their site by licensing it to other companies such as THQ*Ice and Outspark. This game has been out for many years in China, as well as Korea and the Philipines; but only recently brought to the European and International Market with the release of Perfect World International in September of 2008. So already you can tell this game has had time to age with its customers. But now, lets look at the actual gameplay and aspects of the games.

Classes

- Like many MMOs, the first thing you look at is the classes. To see what you like and what you don't like; Perfect World is no different and offers the standard array of classes:

  • The Blademaster (Human), which is the quintessential Warrior of any MMORPG. In this game though, he takes on more of a swiss-army knife role rather than a tanker or damage dealer as he normally is. While not always a requirement, he is the kind of reliable character. Being able to take damage, as well as deal it, but he doesn't really excel in but his stunning abilities do take a great note. Though, he is able to stunlock, which makes him an invaluable asset to any PvP party.
  • The Wizard (Human). The Glasscannon of any MMORPG, the Wizard deals unparalleled damage, while being as mushy as hot glass in the artic; usually only able to take one or two hits before going down. In Perfect World, he is another class that is like a swiss army knife, or rather a "cannon". Not a necessity in any party unless in PvP against Clerics, he exists as that extra nudge in damage rather than a Damage Dealer; and may heal when time arises with his single heal spell.
  • The Archer (Elf), the distance fighter of any game; He provides much needed speed and Damage Dealing during Instances and Zhen Parties. Focusing on Dexterity to increase his Crit%, he also has the highest Evade making him a great PvE and PvP character. But, as you learn he is not always the most comfortable to play as.
  • The Cleric (Elf), one of 2 MUST-HAVE classes in Perfect World, and likely any MMO. I won't go into much detail; but it might be interesting to know that the Cleric contains not only heal spells but the one non-elemental Spell in the entire Perfect World to date.
  • The Barbarian (Werebeast/Male). Barbarians in this game are only Male Characters, and the second MUST-HAVE class in Perfect World. The Barbarian is in effect: The Meatshield. And is built for taking Damage, rather than dealing it. Essential in Territory War (Guild vs Guild) battles as well, no instance or good party is without at least a single Barbarian in their team. Barbarians are available in 3 species: Wolf, Tiger, and Panda.
  • The Venomancer/Summoner (Werebeast/Female). Venomancers are Female Only characters and are the least needed class in the game. As they can often solo themselves; I will not go into this class too much. Just know that they are the fastest levelers and are a Solo-Class.

Gameplay

- Very Smooth Gameplay and easy to use controls. As well as the valued A-D turning which many new MMOs lack, preferring to use a point and click method or mouse wheel to turn. Many battles are fast and quick, but boss battles leave much to be desired, as they can take ages to complete no matter how good your equipment is. You may also note that almost every enemy in the game is different, and they reuse very little models, as well as animations for skills making it almost always a new experience. Though, it is often monotonous as the game follows a very linear path until lvl60; which takes at least 2months to reach.

Graphics

- For a free mmorpg, the graphics have aged well. Though they reuse a lot of textures and the like; it does look natural and well planned for many areas (aside from the obvious location boundaries). The best part though, is the depth on the water and flight/above ground areas. You can see very far, and it's all to scale. Nearly all your screenshots of this game will be breathtaking at max quality. And at low quality, you don't lose much aside from the basic enhancements, though Screenshots are not reccomended here as it will look pixelated.

Community

- This one I found to be a very big surprise. Every server is different in their community, and vastly at that.

== Heavens Tear is a PvE server with the standard MMORPG players and a large variance; people in this server are the basic people you will meet anywhere.

== Sanctuary is a PvE server with the carebears of the internet. They all know how to play and many are skilled at that. But what separates this from any place I have seen, is that people here literally care. You will meet very nice people, and a few hundred people have also met here and gotten into a real life relationship from this game. Sanctuary is the friendly server, perfect for anyone looking to just have a good time and making pals.

== Lost City is a PvP server with the bane of the internet (as I call it). Since it is a PvP server, this whole place is dog-eat-dog. You wont have much fun if you're mellow but otherwise the competition just might be what you're looking for.

== Dreamweaver and that other server. I cannot give you information on the 2 East Coast servers as I have not spent much time in them; sincerest apologies.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

- Great Graphics

- Varied enemies

- Natural environments

- A server for everyone

- Lots of equipment and styles that match what you like

Cons:

- Gets old after a while

- Leveling after lvl60 starts to get tedious and slows down

- Game Settings are far too varied

Overall: This game is worth a try, and if you like it; stick to it. If you don't, give it another try. I'm sure you'll find something, or someone to make this game great for you.

(Note: I am currently being corrected by a player who plays this game frequently; almost religiously. And please remember, when you get into this game; some things may or may not be accurate).

Heh, great review. (Better than mine)

I forgot my server but I'm pretty sure it was ether Dreamweaver, or Lost City. =/

Nope, Dreamweaver it was. Dreamweaver was pretty boring, everyone was quiet and no one would help you out. D;

I guess the only great part about Dreamweaver, was that the guilds were pure win and easy to fit into. Of course, then the cursed merges started. >.<

And yes, we barbs were the meatshields ;D

It's fun being the only barb in your guild. Very fun.

You obviously can't play mmos for your life.

First of all, the graphics are the best I've seen in any MMO. If you thought they were crap then ether your blind, or you didn't set it to max. Leveling is painfully easy until 30, so if you were having trouble after level 5, then you're bad at MMOs. Most MMO soundtracks get annoying, and while PW's were no exception, it was at least better than Grand Chase's.

Stop hatin' on 3D MMOs >>

I know several 3D MMOs that are much better than the three 2D MMOs you mentioned.

who gives a damn that was my opinion stop acting like a noob brat

and nah i'm pretty good around Wide Area MMO's such as PW i've played several ones like Angels Online(58 ), Zero Online(110) and several other i can't remember oh yeah i remembered a couple more NosTale and Dragonica but i quit those mmos in order to focuz on arcade style mmos. I am a 2-2.5D gamer after all ^^ and i also like Anime so i can't pass down on Anime Style mmos O_o.

and the matter on me quitting on lvl 5 is because the game just bored me even tho i had a hi-lvl friend.

So stop acting like a damn noob Fefnir. That was simply my opinion so if you don't like just shut up you don't need to get angry over something that someone else hates or doesn't like that much

I lol'd.

None of us here are being noobish, if anything, you're closer.

I understand you gave an opinion, but how you gave it ticked me off. Normally I would have just ignored your opinion, though seeing as I've played PW for a while and have several friends there, stating your opinion like that is a bit touchy. I couldn't care less if you're a 2D player. However, getting to level 5 and then saying the game is crap is pretty stupid.

As you said, you stated your opinion, but you simply stated it in a fashion that pissed me off.
