The Agonist is a band of Montreal that is good and most people haven't heard of.

And they're better than Of Montreal.

???

you're comparing 2 diffrent artist from 2 completely diffrent genres of music. that's like saying "Stevie Wonder is better than Metallica", you can't compare the two because they are completely diffrent.

again, what?

you usually compare artist within the same genres of music, like "Nirvana vs. Pearl Jam". you can't compare Enya to the Sex Pistols, because they are completely diffrent. you can't convince sombody who likes Indie Rock that The Agonist are a better band than "Of Motreal". If they don't like Melodic death metal, then theres no way of convincing them.

Metallica fans might not think Stevie Wonder is better because their Metellica fans.

anyway, let us just get back to the topic on hand.

I like Melodic Death Metal' date=' and Thewho is right, different genre so don't compare. I can like multiple genre's of music if I like.

PS I like The Agonist

Obviously I can like different genres of music as well if I'm supporting Stevie Wonder over Metallica. ;)

Genre isn't all that relevant. You can compare the individual creative and instrumental components of a musical group or composer and make a judgment of them in comparison to others.

Being better than a group doesn't necessarily mean that you like it more. Obviously, genres aren't comparable in the sense that they have different attractions and therefore draw people with different moods or personalities. I didn't make a statement of preference about Of Montreal or the Agonist. I just said that the Agonist is better.

I was just using that as an example. I think we're going to become the best of friends.

what if you're comparing Grunge to Jazz? obviously' date=' the creative process is completely diffrent. But no arguement here.[/b']

Haha, certainly!

And obviously, Grunge aims for a very different feel from Jazz. But consider that both are very "emotional" genres of music, and therefore both have very expressionistic styles that concentrate less on precision or complexity and more on the "human" aspect. I think then that it's easy enough to compare them by measuring their success in their respective aims. It is, perhaps, more difficult to compare a primarily emotional form of music such as jazz to a more technical form of music such as classical symphony or opera. What's great about metal is that it often so perfectly captures both of those elements, which make it very easy to compare to other forms of music.
