Furious Reaper I
[spoiler=Turn 1: Welcome to Battle Zone!] “Every duelist has his or her own story to tell. Whether that duelist is a beginner, a Duel Academy student, an Underground duelist, or a Professional duelist, that duelist’s story is as important as the rest. Each generation of duelists brings new stories for the future generation to read and learn from. Each story needs to be heard. Only then can we truly understand what true dueling is all about. Dueling isn’t just about the competition. It’s about bringing people together to compete in an activity they can all enjoy together. It’s about the excitement of the crowd when that last Life Point has been dropped, followed by the winner raising his or her arm in victory. It’s the exciting journeys to different places just to duel. And it’s about the duelists themselves...” A medium-sized, dark-blue helicopter flies overhead on a sunny day, moving away from a tall, snowy mountain. On the inside, a person whose face cannot be seen looks at a deck. “Duelists have all sorts of personalities and goals. But, some duelists aren’t pure when it comes to their intentions. Some lie to get to the top, masking their true identity. Others betray their friends for power and glory. Others hire their goons and henchmen to do their dirty work, then take all the credit for themselves.” The person in the helicopter turns his attention out the window and sees Duel Academy in the distance. “But me?” the person spoke to himself. “I’m not like them...” The helicopter heads towards Duel Academy. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - “I activate Final Fusion!” Jaden yelled loudly. “And you know what that means, Zane...” “Sure do,” Zane replied with a grin. Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman, a glowing and silver human-like creature, and Cyber End Dragon, a three-headed metal dragon, struck each other with fierce blows and sent out an immense explosion. Both Jaden and Zane’s Life Points went down to 0. Suddenly, the projector turned off, and the Slifer Red, Ra Yellow, and Obelisk Blue students all shot up from their state of excitement. Dr. Crowler, a professor with blonde hair and a blue uniform much like the Obelisk blue students, walked up to the center of the large, dome-shaped classroom and called for everybody’s attention. “Alright,” he began. “Settle down, everybody. Settle down. Now I’m going to pass out a review quiz over Jaden and Zane’s duel! And remember, the year is almost over, so every exam counts!” Some of the students groaned, and a particular Ra Yellow student, Brian Davis, calmly pulled out a pen. Brian wore his Ra Yellow uniform. He was slender and when standing, stood about 5'8. “Hey,” an Obelisk Blue girl addressed Brian from the row above him. Brian turned and looked up to see Sheri, his girlfriend. He concentrated mainly on her brown eyes and wavy brown hair, hanging down. She was slim, and when standing, stood around 5'6. Brian then wondered exactly how her hair was wavy as there was no wind in the room. He decided to ignore it. “Ya?” he replied. Sheri stared into Brian’s brown eyes, then looked over Brian’s short, parted to the right, dark-brown hair to see Dr. Crowler passing out the exam papers. “Mind if I borrow a pen?” “Oh, go ahead.” He smiled and pulled out a second one, then handed it up to her. They waved to each other, then turned back. Brian and Sheri didn’t care that they were separated by their dorms. As Brian thought about what he would do after class with Sheri and some of his friends, Crowler suddenly passed by him and dropped an exam paper in front of him. He snapped out of his daydreaming and went hard to work. He glanced at the first question. ‘Zane used Power Bond on the first turn of the duel, true or false?’ he read to himself. He laughed to himself, content that this exam would be an easy A. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -The bell rang and the students began bolting out of the room. Brian picked up his books and joined Sheri in walking out of the room. “So...” Brian began. “That was a pretty exciting duel Jaden and Zane had, don’t you think?” “Yep!” she agreed. “It was awesome. Crazy how they drew Battle Fusion at the same time.” “Yeah, I like that effect where the camera split in half,” somebody added. Brian and Sheri turned around to see their Ra Yellow friend, James Rogers. He stood about 5'7, and was a little thinner than Sheri. He didn’t care though, because he never really cared about appearance. His hair was light brown, but it really had no style to it. It just hung down. “Hey there, James!” Sheri greeted. “How’s it goin’?” he asked. “Pretty good,” Brian replied. “That exam was pretty easy.” “Yeah...easy...um...yep.” “You didn’t pay attention during the video did you?” Sheri grinned. “No...” James laughed. “You have to get on it,” Brian told him. “The graduation exams are coming up soon. You want to graduate this year right? We all have to get to the Pro Leagues together!” “The Pros?” somebody began laughing incessantly in the short distance outside of the academy. He was dressed in a Ra Yellow uniform just like Brian and James. He stood around 6'0, around 230 pounds, and had long, black hair with blue highlights. He shot a grim sneer on his face as Brian, Sheri and James walked out of the academy doors. “What is it, Brett?” Brian groaned. “Just the thought of you three posers in the Pros; that’s pretty hilarious! There’s no way you could make it as pros!” Brett jeered at them with fierce intensity. Brett Johnston was known by the students as being somebody who had to cheat to get high grades on written exams. He was even caught once for cheating in a dueling exam, but he didn’t cheat in dueling anymore at least. He had a rather easy year, having sucked up to Dr. Crowler most of the time to slip past some tough spots. “So I suppose you think you could do better at the Pros?” James questioned. “Not only would I do better, but I’d be so good that they’d kick you out!” “I thought you just thought we couldn’t make Pros,” Brian reminded. “Erm...shut up! I have things to do, so I’ll catch you never!” Brett began trotting away. “Making that new cheat sheet!?” Sheri yelled, but Brett ignored her and walked off. “Ugh,” she groaned. “What an egomaniac!” “Yeah, well...we can’t let it ruin our day,” Brian decided. “There’s more interesting things than listening to Brett.” “I still don’t like him,” James threw in. “Hey, I know! It’s nice outside, let’s have a picnic!” Sheri suggested. Suddenly, clouds formed, the sky turned grey, and it began raining. Sheri sighed. “Ok. Or not...” “Awww man, now what?” “I guess we could hang out in the building until the rain lets up.” “Sounds good,” Brian agreed. “Nothing else to do, really. We could wait until lunch.” “Ok!” They all reentered the academy building and began walking down the hall. “So,” Brian began. “Who do you guys think you’ll duel in the graduation duels this year?” “Crowler has it out for me,” James moaned. “He’s gonna put me against some really tough Obelisk Blue.” “Like Sheri?” Sheri stuck out her tongue at James. “I sure hope not...” James laughed again. “With any luck, it’ll be Brett. I wanna beat the pants off of him before we leave this place for good. I can’t wait to get to the Pros.” “You got that right,” Brian agreed. “Well...we should actually do some review together. Final exams are tomorrow aren’t they?” “Yep,” Sheri acknowledged. They walked off to go prepare. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A couple days later, Dr. Crowler was sitting in his office, on the phone. “Mmmyes,” he spoke. “Oh, I’m sure it’ll come as a big surprise to them, indeed!” Crowler suddenly hung up the phone and looked at his computer monitor. On it was what appeared to be a large schematic for an arena. In the middle was a ring that resembled that of a wrestling ring. He grinned at it, then began laughing. Suddenly there was a knock at his door. He quickly turned off his computer monitor and jumped out of his seat. “Who’s there!?” Crowler demanded. “Brett Johnston,” Brett answered from outside in the hall. “Ah, yes. Come in, my boy.” Brett entered and walked towards Crowler’s desk. “What was it you wanted to see me about?” “Brett, I have some wonderful news!” “What’s that?” “Apparently you managed to get the highest scores on the final exams yesterday!” Brett was shocked, especially since he had cheated the whole way through the written portion of the exam. “Well, that goes to show you that crime does -“ he stopped himself short, realizing he was talking to Crowler. “What?” “Nothing, sorry. Anyway, that’s sweet! So do I get some rare cards?” Crowler laughed. “No, my boy. You get to pick who you want to face in the Grab Match this year. The final duel of the year for you students at Duel Academy.” “You mean before that huge field trip you promised to take us on?” “That’s right.” Crowler grinned a little. “In fact, I’m also hoping that you can demonstrate some of those harder question answers to the press before the duel.” “The...p-p-press?” “Well, yes! Of course! Here at Duel Academy we always have the press interview the top scorer on the final exams! It lets the world see what kind of duelists Duel Academy can produce! It’ll also be a good jump start for your dueling career once you’re out of here!” “But wait! I don’t want to do that!” “Well, why not?” “Um...I just don’t.” Brett did not want to reveal the fact that he had cheated. “Oh, come now, Mr. Johnston. Certainly you wish to show off your superior intellect to the entire world! If you’re camera shy, just picture everybody in their underpants!” Brett pictured Crowler in his underpants and almost vomited. “I’d...rather not do that.” “Hmph!” Crowler walked in front of his desk and stood next to Brett. “Come now, it’s a requirement! You were the top scoring student on the exams this year! Now pick your duelist and take the interview!” “Ugh...but, I don’t wanna do the interview!” “Stop being so difficult and do the interview! Pick a duelist!” “Well, the duelist is an easy one. I wanna whip Brian Davis up and down this arena before the year’s over. I’m not doing that interview, though." “You’re going to do it and like it! Are you hiding something?” “Uh...” “Out with it! I assure you that I will not be angry in any shape or form.”- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - “Ugh!” Brian yelled. “I can’t believe I missed that question!” He, Sheri, and James were shuffling through their final exams while sitting in Brian’s dorm. Sheri was laying down on the bed and holding her papers above her while reading them. “You know...” Sheri realized. “The more we take these tests the more stupid it seems when we miss a single question. It doesn’t make sense. It’s like we’re missing questions on a game.” “Meh,” James shrugged. “Whatever,” Brian laughed it off and looked out the window. It was a bright, sunny day, with barely any clouds. “We should try that picnic now.” “What are you talking about?” Sheri asked. “It’s 11 PM!” “What?” Brian opened the window and reached out. The background he saw was a painting, and it fell off the window, slamming on the ground. “It’s...a portrait.” Brian leaned out the window, and another Ra Yellow student named Pai ran over to the portrait and picked it up. Pai’s hair was completely blue. “Pai! What are you doing?” “I need someplace to put my pictures! They’re the world to me!” “Ok, if you wanted to paint for a living you should have gone to painting school!” “Nevah!” Pai ran off with his painting. “Now come on, was that really necessary?” “Nah,” Sheri declared. “But why not?”- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - “What do you mean you cheated on the final exam in order to get a high grade so that you could graduate in the top 5% of your class and get the opportunity to go into Pro Dueling and get the manager of your dreams who could run your career straight to the top with lots of free cards, prizes and food!?” Crowler cried, then took a deep breath. “Hey, I didn’t think I was going to do all that good, even with the cheat sheet!” Brett argued. “Oh, great! You’ll have to have that duel against Brian Davis first. If you defeat him, you can talk to the press about your ‘great dueling abilities’ instead of that you CHEATED on a final exam!” “Sounds great!” Brett grinned. “It shouldn’t! These final exams will follow you for the rest of your dueling career!” “So...why don’t you just make me retake them?” “Oh come on. Do you expect me to take the time to make another copy of the test?” Brett stared at Crowler blankly. “Anyway, let’s try your idea. I’ll duel Brian and defeat him in front of the press and Duel Academy students and staff! That way I look great and he looks terrible! No Pro Manager will accept him as a duelist. Yes, I like that. Let’s do it.” “You’d better win this duel. If you lose, you could be exploited quite easily. You’re one of my favorite students, so I don’t want you to look terrible in front of a public!” “Heh, don’t worry about that. I’ve got this.” Crowler and Brett shook hands, and Crowler laughed as lightning struck outside. “Strange weather we’re having...” “Meh.” - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Back at Brian’s dorm... “Ok, so that takes care of all the Obelisk Blue students we could duel,” Sheri checked off some names on a list. “Brian, phone,” James announced. He handed Brian a telephone. After talking on it, Brian clicked the phone off and set it down on the table. “That was Dr. Crowler,” he alerted the others. “Wait...” Sheri stopped him. “Weren’t you just on a telephone? How did you get a cell phone?” “Brett Johnston somehow got the highest grade on the written exam, and he’s picked me to be his opponent for the Grab Match.” “Cool! Are you gonna do it?” “Heck yeah! There’s no way I’m letting Brett win the last duel of the year. I don’t know how they think he got the highest score without cheating.” “Go for it, man!” James encouraged. “I just wish it were me. I wanna just...ahhh, kick his butt!” “Haha...” - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -The next day, in the dueling arena, all the students of Duel Academy had piled into the circular arena, found themselves a seat in the stands, and gotten prepared to watch the final duel of the year. The press had found themselves some seats up front to watch the duel closely. They had their cameras ready, certainly ready to immediately report all the moves with a play by play eventually. Dr. Crowler walked onto the arena floor with a microphone in his hand. Having learned his lesson from a couple years ago, his microphone was wireless. “Attention, ladies and gentlemen, duelists, the press, anybody else who cared to tune in!” he announced. “Welcome to Duel Academy’s final graduation match of the year! In this match, the student with the highest grade on the written exam was allowed to pick his or her opponent. In this case, I introduce to you, the student with the highest grade, and one of my personal favorites, Brett Johnston!” Brett walked out and began waving at everybody. However, he was now in an Obelisk Blue blazer. The students murmured to themselves. Sheri and James appeared disgusted, as they sat near the area where Brian would be standing. “This is ridiculous...” Sheri groaned. “Why do people reward suck ups?” “Meh,” James grunted. Brett shook Dr. Crowler’s hand, and Crowler leaned towards him a little. “You’d best make this look good,” Crowler whispered. “I’ve got it,” Brett assured him. “You’d better...” Crowler returned to the microphone. “Now, ladies and gentlemen, Brett Johnston’s grades were so high on the test, that I decided at the last minute to promote him to Obelisk Blue!” Some more students act skeptical in the crowd. “I honestly can’t believe he did that,” Sheri fumed. “He must be trying to hype this school more.” “And now,” Crowler continued. “The Ra Yellow student that Brett has decided to duel. Brian Davis!” Brian walks out in his Ra Yellow blazer, with his duel disk already equipped. He holds his deck in front of him and smiles at it, then walks around the arena while waving to the other students in a friendly manner. He stood on the right side of the arena, then he and Brett walked to each other in the center and handed each other their decks. Brett and Brian began shuffling and cutting their decks, not taking their eyes off each other, sternly staring each other down as the moment became tense. “This is it...” Sheri stated to herself. “Brian has to win,” James emphasized. Brian and Brett returned their decks, then walked to the separate corners of the arena floor. Brett loaded his deck into his duel disk and activated it. Brian did the same immediately after. “So, now I can finally show you that I’m better than you!” Brett jeered. “If you really got those grades, shouldn’t you already be better than me?” Brian toyed. “Shut up and let’s duel!” “Fine by me.” Brett and Brian each drew their five cards and stared each other down, then observed their hands. They glanced up at each other. “Duel!” both yelled in unison. The students and Crowler became excited. (Brett: 4000) (Brian: 4000) “Beauty before age,” Brett declared. “Um...” Brian scratched his head. “Shut up, you know what I meant. Grades before...um...lesser grades. Why don’t we just flip a coin...?” Dr. Crowler groaned impatiently and jumped onto the stage with a coin. “Alright, the Yugi face is heads, and the Kaiba face is tails,” he declared. “Hold on,” Brett interjected. “Why should Kaiba’s face be tails? He built this place!” “No,” Brian disagreed. “Yugi should be heads because he beat Kaiba in the first episode.” “Forget that. Kaiba beat Yugi at Duelist Kingdom!” “Yeah...but then Yugi beat Kaiba again in Battle City, and he would have beaten him in the movie!” “Enough!” Crowler snapped. “Here, I’ll use a quarter. Any objections to that!?” Brian and Brett shook their heads, so Crowler flipped the coin while mumbling to himself. “Heads!” Brian and Brett declared at the same time. Crowler hit himself on the head. “Hey! I’m the Obelisk Blue here!” Brett argued. “I should call the coin toss.” “Shut up!” Crowler snapped once more. “Brian, since you’re the challenger call the coin toss!” Crowler whipped the coin into the air angrily. “I call heads!” Brian shouted. The coin landed and flipped heads! The crowd cheered loudly and Brian started jumping up and down with excitement. “It’s...just a coin toss,” Sheri pointed out. “Meh,” James replied. “Anyway,” Brian continued. “I’ll go first. Let’s go!” Brian drew his card and added it to his hand. “I’ll open up with Graceful Charity! It lets me draw three new cards from my deck.” Brian took the top three cards on his deck and added them to his hand. “But now I have to discard two cards from my hand. But that’s ok, I got what I needed.” Brian took two cards from his hand and sent them to the Graveyard. “Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Brett yawned. “We all know.” “I’ll set a card face-down on the field, as well as a Defense Position monster. Your move.” “Finally!” Brett drew his card. “Check this! I summon Skilled Dark Magician (1900/1700) in Attack mode!” A magician in black clothing appeared on the field, wielding a long, black staff. “Now say adios to your face-down monster. I activate the Spell Card Nobleman of Crossout!” As a light on Skilled Dark’s shoulder began glowing, a large sword impaled Brian’s face-down monster. Revealed, was a creature with long, grey hair, and a medium-sized blue shield with a yellow outline. “Sorry, Brett. You’ve activated my Mid Shield Gardna’s (100/1800) special ability! When you target it’s face-down form with a Spell Card, I get to flip it face-up and negate that card.” “No fair!” Link from The Legend of Zelda complained. “Mid Shield Gardna stole my Hyrulian Shield!” “Let it go...” Zelda dragged Link out of the building by the ear. “Regardless,” Brett continued. “My Skilled Dark Magician still has more attack points than that thing’s defense points! Skilled Dark, annihilate!” Skilled Dark leapt into the air and unleashed a dark wave of energy from its staff. “I have a face-down card, Waboku!” Brian flipped his Trap Card, and three men in blue suits appeared to erase the damage. “This card allows me to...yeah...what the description told, erase the damage.” “This is already becoming annoying. I’ll end my turn.” Brian drew his card. “Ok, now I’m using my Mid Shield Gardna’s other ability! I can return it to face-down Defense Position.” Mid Shield Gardna sank back into the card. “I’ll also call another monster in Defense and end.” “Good, my move!” Brett added his next card and observed his hand with glee. “I summon my Breaker the Magical Warrior (1600/1000)!” A large warrior in red armor appeared, then drew a long sword. A glow similar to the one that Skilled Dark had appeared on Breaker. “When this card is summoned, I get to put a counter on it and raise its attack by 300 points (1900/1000)! Now, Breaker, attack that Mid Shield Gardna!” Breaker lunged at Mid Shield Gardna’s card and sliced it to pieces. “There’s more where that came from; Skilled Dark, attack the other monster!” Skilled Dark blasted its energy wave, but revealed was a man with long, blonde hair and a hat. He was dressed in red and brown armor, and did not appear affected by the attack. “What’s going on here!?” Brett demanded. “Command Knight (1200/1900)!?” “That’s right, Brett. My Command Knight also survives your blow!” “Whatever, I’ll place a card face-down and end my turn.” Brian took his next card. “Ok, and now it’s time to give your monsters a going away party!” “What?” “I summon Mataza the Zapper (1300/800)!” A samurai-looking warrior with blue, green, and brown armor launched itself onto the field, holding two swords and looking ready for battle. “But now, thanks to my Command Knight’s special ability, my Mataza gains 400 points (1700/800)!” “I thought you were supposed to be good at math! Your monster only has 1700 points, whereas mine both have 1900!” Brian grinned while holding a card in his hand. “Not quite. I activate Fusion Sword Murasame Blade!” Mataza took control of an energy-surging sword, then armed it. “It raises my warrior’s attack by 800 points (2500/800)!” A second glow appeared on Skilled Dark Magician. “Mataza can attack twice per Battle Phase, so take out the trash!” Mataza lunged into the air and started flying towards Skilled Dark and Breaker. “I have a trap! Mirror Force!” A huge barrier blocked Mataza’s attack and destroyed it. “This destroys all of your attacking monsters; oh well!” “I’ll set one card face-down. Your turn.” “I thought you’d say that.” Brett drew. “Yes! Now I activate Mausoleum of the Emperor!” The arena rumbled and a large mausoleum appeared behind Brett. Two large, lit torches appeared next to Brett as a third glow lit up on Skilled Dark. “This Field Spell allows us each to pay multiples of 1000 Life Points instead of making tributes for summons!” “Oh boy...” Sheri groaned. “This can’t be good.” “So now,” Brett declared. “I pay 1000 Life Points and summon the Dark Magician Girl (2000/1700)!” A very pretty spellcaster appeared, with long, blonde hair, a blue magician’s hat with pink stripes, as well as a blue and pink outfit. (Brett: 3000) (Brian: 4000) “But wait! There’s more! Since my Skilled Dark has three counters on him, I get to sacrifice him and summon a Dark Magician!” Brett shuffled through his deck and found the Dark Magician, then summoned him to the field (2500/2100). He was a in a full purple magician’s suit, and held a greenish staff in his hand. Dark Magician Girl waved at Dark Magician, then pulled out her beige-like staff. “That’s not good,” Brian decided. “No, genius, it’s not.” ‘Hahaha, this is going just as I’ve foreseen,’ Crowler thought to himself. ‘Brett is going to look like one of the best duelists this school has ever seen! My butt is going to be saved, and this cover up will be complete!’ “Now my army of monsters is going to be your demise!” Brett announced. “Now my Dark Magician Girl will attack your Command Knight with Black Burning!” Dark Magician Girl fired a stream of pink energy at Command Knight, incinerating it with ease. “Next up, Breaker! With a direct attack!” Breaker ran up to Brian and sliced him. (Brett: 3000) (Brian: 2100) “Oh no!” Sheri cried. “Dark Magician’s attack will finish him off!” “Dark Magician! Dark Magic Attack!” Brett yelled viciously. Dark Magician shot a green sphere of energy out of his staff. “Reveal face-down card, Enemy Controller!” Brian flipped up his card, and a large video game controller blocked the shot of the energy, then Dark Magician found himself in Defense Mode. “Grr...” “Thanks to Enemy Controller, your Dark Magician won’t be attacking on this turn!” “Not like it matters. Make your move.” “I draw.” Brian gritted his teeth, as he didn’t have many resources left in his hand. “I set one card face-down. Next, I’ll use your Mausoleum’s effect to Set a monster in Defense Mode. Your move.” (Brett: 3000) (Brian: 1100) “Heh, destroying yourself? That works fine for me! I summon Blade Knight (1600/1000)!” A light blue armored warrior showed up with a long, arched sword. “Wait, what?” “That’s right, Brian. I have warriors too. In fact, this deck is my Magical Warriors Deck! And they’re unbeatable, especially when I play this! The A. Forces!” Blade Knight began glowing. “Thanks to this card, for every Spellcaster and Warrior monster on my field, Blade Knights jumps up by 200 points! Since I have four total, my Blade Knight leaps all the way to 2400 (2400/1000)! But, just when you thought it was over...since I only have one card in my hand, Blade Knight gets an extra 400 points (2800/1000)!” “Oh man,” Sheri worried. “2800 attack points...” “And now,” Brett decided. “I’ll use Breaker’s effect (1600/1000). By dumping that token on him, I destroy your face-down!” Brian watched as his Call of the Haunted was annihilated. “Agh...” he groaned. “I switch Dark Magician back to Attack mode. Now, Blade Knight, destroy his face-down monster!” Blade Knight’s sword glew bright blue, and he jumped in the air, then slammed down hard on the card. However, a red and orange shield with one eye on it was revealed. “This cannot be!” “But it is! Meet Millennium Shield (0/3000). Since it has 3000 Defense points, it doesn’t look like even your strongest monster can destroy it!” (Brett: 2800) (Brian: 1100) “All right, Brian!” Sheri cheered. “Nice, he used Brett’s own Mausoleum against him,” James commented. “That Millennium Shield is going to be hard to get rid of by battle.” ‘Ahhhh!’ Crowler cried. ‘Millennium Shield!? Brett had best have a good monster removal card coming up soon. He’s not supposed to lose!’ “What a lucky draw,” Brett hissed. “I guess you get one more turn.” “And I’m hoping it’s a good turn,” Brian wished as he drew. “Ok. I summon Goblin Attack Force (2300/0)!” Lots of clothed goblins in golden helmets appeared and drew their clubs. “Next I activate the magic of Heavy Storm!” “Ah!” “So now A. Forces and Mausoleum bites the dust!” A huge tornado annihilated every Spell and Trap on the field. Blade Knight’s attack dropped down to 2000. “My Blade Knight’s attack power! You’ll regret that.” “Nah, I’m good. Goblins, attack Breaker!” Goblin Attack Force piled on Breaker and beat up on it with their clubs until it was destroyed. “And now, Goblins switch to defense. That means your Dark Magician won’t be damaging me next turn.” (Brett: 2100) (Brian: 1100) “Whatever, my turn.” Brett drew and looked a little pleased. “I’ll activate Dedication Through Light and Darkness!” “Oh boy...” “This nifty spell lets me sac my Dark Magician and summon...Dark Magician of Chaos (2800/2600)!” A black light engulfed Dark Magician, and a magician in dark clothing with a long, stick-like staff launched out of it. It’s menacing stare reflected its cold-hearted nature. It glared at Brian with anger in its eyes. “When this new magician comes into play, I get a Spell Card from the Graveyard. And I’ll activate it, The A. Forces!” Blade’s attack rose to 2600. “Your Dark Magician of Chaos may be strong, but he still can’t defeat my Millennium Shield.” “He doesn’t have to. It’s not like you’ll be able to defeat HIM anyway! Now my Chaos, attack Goblins!” Dark Magician of Chaos held up its staff and shot out a blue stream of energy, obliterating Goblins. “Whenever Dark Magician of Chaos destroys a monster, that monster is removed from play!” Brian took his Goblin Attack Force card and put it in his pocket. “Your turn, Brian. Show me what you’ve got.” Brian looked down at his deck as everybody continued observing from the stands. “How’s Brian going to beat that Dark Magician of Chaos?” James wondered. “Well, here goes nothing.” Brian drew his card. “I set a card face-down and that’s all.” Brett grinned a little. “It doesn’t look like you have anything that can stop me! I’ll be the winner of this duel, and then I’ll move onto the top of the Pro leagues!” Brett looked up to the sky as he drew his card. “I activate Magical Dimension! This lets me tribute a monster on the field to summon a new one.” Dark Magician Girl disappeared, and another Skilled Dark Magician appeared (1900/1700). “But that’s not all.” Energy began surrounding Millennium Shield. “What the...?” “When I use my Magical Dimension, I can destroy one monster on the field! That means that your Millennium Shield just went bye bye!” Millennium Shield shattered and Brian defended himself from the blast. “Oh no!” Sheri cried. “Now his last line of defense is gone!” “Good job, Brett,” Crowler complimented. “Now finish this up and let’s get on with that interview!” “You got it, Crowler,” Brett grinned. “Dark Magician of Chaos, do the honors!” Dark Magician of Chaos lunged at Brian. “Negate Attack!” A Trap Card flipped up, and a swirling beam absorbed the impact of Dark Magician of Chaos. “No!” “Yes, and now that Negate Attack has been played, your Battle Phase comes to an end. Looks like you have to wait one more turn.” “I’ll wait that turn, then.” Brian drew. ‘This should buy me some time,’ he thought. “I set another card face-down and end my turn.” “Again with the face-down. Why don’t you summon some strong monsters? Oh, that’s right. You don’t have any!” Brett drew his card. “Dark Magician of Chaos! Attack directly!” “I activate Scapegoats! Now I get four Goat Tokens (0/0).” A blue goat, pink goat, orange goat, and red goat appeared on the field. Dark Magician of Chaos slammed his staff down on the red one and destroyed it. “Ergg...Blade Knight! Skilled!” Skilled Dark and Blade Knight chopped down two more goats, leaving only the blue one. “Just one more, and you’re finished! Your move.” Brian drew. “Time for one less monster.” “What?” “I set one card face-down. And now that I have no cards in my hand, I can summon Swift Gaia the Firece Knight (2300/2100) without tributes!” “A whole lot of good that’ll do you. My Blade and DMOC still have more power!” “But not your Skilled Dark Magician.” “Aww...” Swift Gaia, a knight on a horse, charged at Skilled Dark and destroyed it with its joust. (Blade Knight: 2400/1000) (Brett: 1700) (Brian: 1100) “Your Blade’s points have now gone down with one less monster. Your move.” “He left himself wide open against Dark Magician of Chaos!” James yelled. “Well, he needed to get rid of some of Brett’s monsters,” Sheri explained. “Even though he’ll take another hit to his Life Points, Brett won’t have enough monsters to attack him directly this turn. Brian still has a chance!” Brett drew his card. “Chaos, crush Gaia!” Chaos lunged into the air and came down on Swift Gaia. Swift Gaia blocked with his joust, but Chaos overpowered him and destroyed him eventually. (Brett: 1700) (Brian: 600) Brian turned back around after avoiding the explosion, and Blade was right in front of him. Blade slashed the goat apart and jumped back to Brett’s field. Brian looked at his empty field, minus the face-down card he had played in order to summon Swift Gaia. Brian knew that this was his last draw. He picked up the top card and revealed it to himself. His eyes lit up. “What?” “I activate my face-down card, Reinforcement of the Army! This lets me bring a Warrior-type monster from my deck to my hand.” Brian picked up his deck and looked through it. “And I know just which one I want.” He held out a card that appeared to be a kid dressed in blue clothing with a large sword. “This one, Silent Swordsman LV3!” “Level 3?” “That’s right, and now I activate...Swords of Revealing Light!” Bright swords rained down on Brett’s field. “You cannot attack for three turns. Go, Silent Swordsman (1000/1000)!” Silent Swordsman, covered in his armored had a blonde hair, drew his sword and prepared for battle. “Your turn.” Brett drew. “I set a card face-down. Since your Silent Swordsman isn’t affected by my Spell Cards, it’s your move.” Brian grinned and drew his card. Silent Swordsman glew brightly. “What’s going on here!?” “It’s time for my swordsman to level up to LV5 (2300/1000)!” Silent Swordsman became very tall, and his sword was now just about as tall as him. “Your move, Brett.” “I activate my face-down card, Solemn Wishes!” “Solemn Wishes!?” “That’s right. You can stall all you want, but now every time I draw a card, I gain 500 Life Points! Like my Draw Phase for example!” Brett drew his card. (Brett: 2200) (Brian: 600) “Take as long as you wish! I’ll just keep gaining Life Points! Your move!” Brett observed his hand. Two copies of “Thousand Knives” and a “Magical Dimension”. Neither were useful to him at the present moment. Brian looked at Brett’s field, then at Silent Swordsman LV5. ‘My Swordsman can’t get any stronger without a direct attack...’ he thought. ‘I have to get him this turn, or his points may go too high, and he’ll have a second chance.’ ‘Brett has to destroy those swords and destroy this kid!’ Crowler yelled to himself. ‘The press can’t see my highest scoring student lose a duel! Especially not the last duel of the year!’ “Draw!” Brian looked at Silent Swordsman LV5, closed his eyes, whipped the card in front of his face, and opened his eyes. “I discard my card and activate Lightning Vortex!” Additional Comment:“What!? Time out!” “Now all your face-up monsters are...destroyed!” Lightning rained from the sky and zapped Dark Magician of Chaos and Blade Knight were blown clear off the field. “No! I’m not supposed to lose!" “Brett’s not supposed to lose!” Crowler howled. “Now, Silent Swordsman LV5, attack Brett directly! Silent Slash!” Silent Swordsman disappeared, and appeared behind Brett, then did an upper slash to his back. Brett jolted forward and stumbled a little. (Brett: 0) (Brian: 600) The students and press stood up, then clapped. Crowler sunk himself down below the arena floor, unable to believe that Brett lost the duel. “This can’t be happening...” Crowler mumbled to himself. Brett was seething. “No! How could I lose!?” Sheri and James jumped onto the arena floor and celebrated the win with Brian. Some press members walked up to him and began asking questions. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Dr. Crowler had promised to take all the graduates to a famous dueling arena near Industrial Illusions headquarters. They had flown by plane, and on the bright, sunny day, they all exited the plane and were met with an extremely large dome building. Excited, Crowler lead all the duelists inside. Since they had graduated, Brian, Sheri and James no longer had to wear the Duel Academy uniforms. Brian wore his green t-shirt and blue shorts. Sheri was in a black, sleeveless t-shirt and blue short-shorts with a belt. James equipped himself with a platinum jacket, having a navy blue shirt underneath it. He had blue jeans and on his neck were metallic blue sunglasses. He wore his glasses only when he dueled. “Well, I wonder why Crowler brought us here,” Brian inquired. “Maybe they have a new dueling arena,” Sheri suggested. “Well, I can wait to duel in it!” James shouted. “Settle down, everybody," Crowler called. “I have some news for you graduates. You see...not everything is as you think it is.” Some of the students began talking amongst themselves, and Brian, Sheri and James had skeptical looks on their faces. “You see, you have been selected, along with some other dueling school graduates, to lead the way for a new world of dueling! A world of dueling that not only tests your deck, but you! Seto Kaiba himself has created this new system of dueling, and it will be used all around the world along-side regular dueling!” “This is different than normal dueling?” Sheri questioned. “And now, Duel Academy graduates. Welcome to a Pro league never thought of before! I give you...Duel Monsters Battle Zone!” Crowler whips a door open and the students look inside to see a rather large roofed stadium, with the square ring in the center. Crowd seats littered the area, and there was an announcement table. “What is this, the WWE?” a graduate asked. “No,” Crowler moaned. “It’s Duel Monsters Battle Zone! You see, this new type of Pro League allows duelists of all ranks compete against each other for many prizes and rare cards! There are arenas like this around the world, ready to host numerous Duel Monsters tournaments! It will provide ample entertainment for the crowd.” “So isn’t this basically like the regular Pro League?” Sheri asked. “Not at all. You see, there will be special kinds of matches, Tag-Team tournaments and the chance to win a match against a reigning Duel Monsters champion! I also have more news for you. Because you’re Duel Academy graduates, you’ve all been automatically entered into the first tournament! Now is your chance to prove yourselves!” “Ooohh.” “I leave you, former Duel Academy students, with this advice. You may not see each other throughout your ventures, but always remember that your roots are Duel Academy! Be proud of your accomplishments!” The students let out a loud cheer and began heading around. “So long, my former students.” Crowler leaves and heads for the plane. “Battle Zone...” Brian repeated to himself while looking at the large arena. “I think I’m going to like this.” Brian pulled out his deck and looked at his Silent Swordsman LV3 card. “We’ve got a lot of work to do...”
