Milk-Chan
First and foremost, this is my first tutorial. So don't bash me for my lack of proper explaining skills. Also, I'm no pro at GIMP, so yeah this isn't the best. But it's stepping stones.Anyway, people were asking me how to make cards like for example, this: On this card there are two things you could notice. The picture and the actual card itself. I will be explaining how to actually do both step-by-step, the way I do it.You will need:1. GIMP2. Patience and about 20 minutes per card.3. A sense of creativity.Ok let's start with the actual picture. This process is as easy as Holo'ing. So if you can do that, this will be cakewalk.
Step 1: Save a picture that will be the background picture.
Step 2: Save a foreground picture that will go over the background.
Step 3: Open up GIMP, and open the foreground picture.Step 4: Open as a layer, the background picture.Step 5: Adjust the shape of the background picture, so that it fits the foreground. You can do this manually by pressing shift+T and reshaping it, or if the background is too large, right-click the background on the layers menu to the right, and click layer to image size. Warning, whatever does not fit the foreground picture will be cut off.Step 6: Now, make sure the background is on top of the foreground. Click the arrow across from Mode on the layers menu.Step 7: Select a mode. I prefer Overlay, or Soft Light. But you can try out all kinds to get different results.Step 8: Adjust the opacity to your liking.Step 9: Click the arrow across from Layers on the layers menu, or right-click the top layer, and click Merge down. You're done!
I used Overlay at 40 opacity to get this. Not so hard right? So lets get to doing the whole card. If you were successful in doing the above, this will be even easier.
Step 1: Save an image you're going to put over the entire card.
Step 2: Create the card you want to edit in the Card Maker. Fill out everything you normally would.
Step 2: Save the card to your computer.Step 3: Open your card in GIMP.Step 4: Open as a layer, the Background for the entire card. (The picture in step 1)Step 5: Layer the background to image size.Step 6: Click the arrow for Mode, and choose one. I usually do Overlay, Soft Light, or Grain Merge. But do as you please!Step 7: Click the rectangle box tool, or hit R. Make a box around the picture. Try to avoid the border.Step 8: Right-click in the box, go to edit, then cut.Step 9: Click outside the box, go to layers or right-click your background picture. Click merge down and your done!
This was made with Overlay with an opacity of 50.
This was made with Screen with an opacity of 89.7. However, I had to darken the picture so that it wasn't too bright. See tips for more info. The pic isn't great 'cause I needed another example. But you get the gist. Tips:- Remember, with some of the modes the picture will look too dark. - With the cards, try not to make the text to unreadable. - If the picture is too dark on the card, create a box around it, right-click, go to colors, and click Brightness/Contrast Tool. Edit the brightness until you like it.-If you put you mind to it, and add some creativity, you can get crazy results. Try experimenting. Like using more layers, or the same picture with different Modes. Maybe you'll get something like this!
If you have any questions or comments, just leave them here.REPS appreciated, but are not expected. Until next time, Milk-Chan out! Mehmani
Simple, but useful. I actually really like this tut. Strawberry-Nii-Chan does them better though.
Milk-Chan
Thanks!Like I said, I'm not pro. Hardly skilled at it. But the people insisted that I make a tutorial for this. So I figured, why not. Maybe people will put a little more effort in their cards >_>
White Devil
Pretty good, I've got another way to make them, but it's pretty good though.Still, maybe you should raise the opacity on the final example, 'cause we don't really see the background picture on the entire card. Also, maybe you could try screen, for the opacity (that's how I do).You can take a look at my Homemade Promo Card thread in the Showcase Section if you want to ;)
Milk-Chan
Sounds good.I'll get right on it.I just needed an example that would be easy to see, but wouldn't butcher the card to the point where the text is unreadable.EDIT: I added another example picture. It's not great but it's the gist of the process. I'll fix it later.
