10 Minute Analysis: Dirg the Dark Monarch

 

Interestingly, Konami have released a new "Monarch" monster. Now, while I'm pleased they've expanded this archetype, I'm not happy by the way they've done it nor the implications it raises.

Effect: When this card is Normal or Special Summoned, you can remove from play up to 2 cards from your opponent's Graveyard. For each card removed, send the top card of your opponent's Deck to the Graveyard. This card cannot attack during the turn it is Normal or Special Summoned.

Now, the reasons I am unhappy are quite simple. The "Monarchs" are based on the seven kings of Ancient Rome. That's why there were seven of them when they were created and why when I expanded the set with my "Majestic Dawn Monarchs", I made upgraded counterparts not new members, the only exception being "Remus the Fallen Monarch", which can be explained away. This new "Monarch" can't be however. It's not a Dark Counterpart; it's simply another "Monarch", which raises the question: Where did they get the idea from?

 

Its effect is also a problem. All the other "Monarchs" have effects based on cards on the field or in the hand. "Caius" RFPs a card, "Zaborg" destroys a monster, "Thestalos" discards a card and "Kuraz" destroys on the field and gives a draw (ie into the hand). "Dirg" on the other hand, focusses on the Graveyard, something all the others didn't do. It just doesn't fit it...

 

Apart from the fact this new member removes the principle the originals were designed from and doesn't stick to the basic effects, its effect also might give an indication of what Konami, now clouded with Synchros, consider a balanced effect. This card can only be compared to "Kuraz". "Kuraz" destroys on the field and then allows a draw. This on the other hand, RFPs two cards from your opponent and then mills.

 

It's the last part that is the insight. "Kuraz's" effect is a large positive (destroying up to 2 cards on the field) followed by a large negative effect (your opponent, most likely, drawing 1 or 2 cards). So blitzing your opponent's field meant giving them the equivilent of a "Pot of Greed" during your turn. It became a gamble of either gaining a quick advantage and risking a brutal backlash the next turn, simply summoning your beatstick, or even destroying your own cards and hope you draw something useful.

 

"Dirg" does not have that. Not only does it RFP two cards (compared to "Caius'" 1), but then it sends an equal number of cards from your opponent's Deck to the Graveyard. In my mind, that's two positive effects with no drawback. Your opponent loses cards they could have used in both effects. Plus, with the incredibly small number of cards that can prevent effects that RFP from the Graveyard, the effect is much less likely to be stopped by Traps.

 

It is my belief that card effects have got stronger over the years, especially since the introduction of Synchro monsters, possibly because Konami have lost some of their judgment. This, in a way, confirms that belief. When compared to its older counterparts, this new "Monarch" is much more powerful and more abusable; similar to "Judgment Dragon" and "Blackwing Armor Master" are much stronger than the "Elemental Hero" and "Gladiator Beast" trump cards.

 

In conclusion, I do not like this card. It's done something that I'd hoped Konami would never have done. The original "Monarchs" were balanced despite their powerful effects and in many Decks were a semi-staple. This though is an overpowered wreak. It's made the "Monarchs" broken.

Like it says, it took me 10 or 15 minutes in total. Thank you for reading.

 

The only thing I can come up with was as a filler card for the new set, and they chose an Archetype that was once popular, but not anymore. They may have thought they could have got away with it.

I've rated it, I like it.

It's indeed a shame. The Mill/RFP is just to powerfull and will definatly be something to fear when dueling against new Monarch Decks.

 

P.S. I came to that conclusion somewhee around SD/RDA.

@Max: Thank you, yea, I was being silly about the whole girl thing, oh well. I do not know what you mean by meek, but thats alright. Congrats on the short effect. Too bad my computer is being anti-picture friendly today. Beaware, you might get more then one award coming to you, to.

 

@Chrid: You need to take swimming lessons? Wow, at least I know how to swim sorta good. Thankfully they invented death life jackets. Well, my cousin brittany jumped off the dock and landed in the water, but the jacket hooked on to the dock and kept pulling her under. So, I had to go in the water swim out there and hold her up out of the water while I waited for someone else to untie the strap from the dock. It was interesting.

 

@Lexadin: I have that same very problem, they like to look, not reply. They are looky loos, I call them. They don't care, as long as they can have a peak of what might be good or bad, to them.

 

@Max: I can't believe they did that on Stardust Accelerator, were they being idiots? I like call of the haunted more b/c of the fact that you can use it during your battle phase, and still have your battle phases, or use it as a free summon. I love those two major facts. Monster reborn just can give you your opponents monster during your turn, which is alright, but it sucks, even though I have 7 copies of them, 4 that say magic, and 3 that say spell on them.

@ Lex: A final bit that could be worrying is that it is a Spellcaster-Type, so could be sided with the quite-powerful 'Spell Counter' Decks.

 

 

@ XzY: To be 'meek' is to be passive; non-confrontational. To not jump into situations. In essence, it's to be restrained and soft-spoken.

 

I might get an award, but it is a popularity contest, so the same people win each time.

 

It has to be a mistake on "Stardust Accelerator"; I'm convinced of it. There's no way they could have noticed that and passed it.

 

As for the card "Dimension Paradox", the effect reads:

 

'Activate only when a monster would be removed from the field. Remove that monster from play instead.'

@ Anyone: I made a new card, but I'm pretty shure I screwed the OCG up. So a fix anyone?

 

Negate the Special Summon of a Synchro Monster your opponent controls and destroy it. Both players picks up cards of thier Extra Deck equal to the Level of the destroyed Synchro Monster, send all picked up Synchro Monsters to the Graveyard and then inflict damage to the player equal to the of Synchro Monsters they send to the Graveyard by this card effect x 300.

Yea, I finally got the computer to show the picture, I had to do some figiting. Nice picture by the way, its a doosy. Hmm, yea, I guess that explains it, bout the stardust accelerator thing.
