Both forms of insulin require a constant vigil over your sugar intake.

[spoiler=The Science]

The liver stores and uses sugar you consume using two chemicals. One converts sugar into fat, the second converts fat into sugar (and then energy). That's why sugar gives you an energy burst, it's a good fuel. And why eating too much sugar and not doing anything makes you fat. (It's simple really)

Usually, the levels of these two chemicals vary slightly (like the waves on the sea, going up and down slowly) as sugar intake increases or decreases.

What diabetes is is an imbalance in the governer of that system. As in, when you eat sugar, the levels of the first chemical rocket up far too quickly. Then, the liver counteracts that by mass producing the second chemical, causing both levels to rise and fall violently.

The body can't take that. So diabetes sufferers need to regulate their sugar so their liver can keep the chemical levels in check.

If your dad has been taking it for a while, then it is most likely genetic. However, it can be forced inactive by other genes (whether it's dominant or submissive). And since the symptoms begin on average when the sufferer begins secondary school, you might have escaped. :)

Thanks Necro...I think...

I always find it easier to explain a point if you can give the background. Plus, anyone doing Biology at 10th Grade(?) will learn something along those lines.

It's just interesting how damaged the human body can get from one faulty system and how warped the human mind can become without appearing it...
