Chapter One: Another One’s Journey

He stopped in front of Route One, the tall grass and his brown hair swaying in the breeze. His brown eyes scanned the area, then his Poke Ball, which he tightly gripped in his hand. Professor Oak had told them some of the Pokemon he’d handed out that day weren’t from Kanto, and naturally he was excited to know what his selection was. He wanted it to be a surprise for when he battled another Pokemon. Looking at the ball also reminded him of his quest to become the champion of the region’s league, the Indigo League. His dream, like almost everyone else’s he knew, was to become a “Pokemon Master”.

“Hey...” Someone else had to tap him on the shoulder to get his attention, and the trainer quickly turned around. It was one of the guys he’d met in the professor’s lab. He was dressed in a purple long-sleeved shirt in contrast to the other boy’s short-sleeved green one, and had black hair. They were both about the same age, eleven years. “Do you wanna battle?” he said, his voice mellow.

“Sure...but can I get your name first?” the trainer replied. “I’m Louis.”

“I’m Brent.” His opponent took a Poke Ball from his pocket and backed away a few feet, allowing some space for their Pokemon to battle. They both tossed the red-and-white capsules from their hands, which opened in mid-air. From within emerged two Pokemon from a flash of red light...

On Louis’ side was a Trapinch, the Ant Pit Pokemon! The orange ant creature was a little over half as tall as his new owner. Trapinch’s beady black eyes sparkled in the sunlight, and combined with its perpetual toothy smile it looked quite happy.

On Brent’s side was a Weedle, the Hairy Bug Pokemon! He had a horn on both his head and the end of his tail, and possessed a red nose of comical proportions. His body was composed of what appeared to be brown spheres, each with two tiny feet.

At the appearance of these combatants, their PokeDexes activated. Brent’s was still in his pocket, giving him a shock as it tried to open, but Louis had his in hand. The PokeDex was a red machine that almost opened like a book, displaying information on any Pokemon they would encounter. The professor had given them to the boys, the better to record their findings and complete his life’s work of making an encyclopedia full of Pokemon information. They both blurted out information about the two in a digitized man’s voice. Brent chose to turn his off, while Louis listened to his PokeDex entries.

”Trapinch #328: The Ant Pit Pokemon. Trapinch mostly lives in the arid deserts of Hoenn, and is rarely found in Sinnoh. It builds conical pits for its prey to fall into. It can survive for days without any water.

“Weedle #13: The Hairy Bug Pokemon. Weedle can be found in the forests of most regions. Its large nose is useful for sniffing out leaves that are safe to eat, and it can even be found hiding under them. Its bright colors and poison stingers are meant to ward off predators.

”See more by pressing the O button.”

Trapinch looked at Louis eagerly, waiting for a command. He quickly thought of something and commanded, “Bite him!”

“Try to dodge and use a string shot.”

Weedle was able to make a move before Trapinch could even reach him! He shot a string-like material from under his nose, further slowing the ant. The white material stuck his limbs to the ground! “Bite it off!” Louis cried, hoping it would work. Trapinch was able to bite and nudge the string off, then run at full speed toward Weedle.

“Trah!” it shouted, tumbling over the worm as it bit its face. They both ended up falling onto the grass, injuring both of them but injuring Weedle more.

“Sting it!”

“Del!” the worm grunted as it jabbed Trapinch in the lower jaw with its head. Luckily for Louis and Trapinch it wasn’t a fatal hit, because the ground-type was resistant to poison and toxins!

“Now get it with another string shot, then sting it again.” Weedle did as he was told, shooting the stuff at Trapinch and trapping it for a second. Right when he thought he was free to attack, the bug struck him in the chest with its tail barb! This proved to be a critical hit, though it did about as much damage as it might to a normal Pokemon. As Trapinch jumped back in pain, he realized he had not only been struck hard, he’d also been injected with poison! He felt his head throbbing and his legs weakening slowly, but was still able to go on.

“Trapinch must be poisoned...” He took a quick look in his PokeDex, which stated:

”Poison - a status condition inflicted by almost every poison-type move. It slowly drains a Pokemon’s health, and if not cured in time can even bring it to its lowest level of stamina. Poison can be cured by an Antidote or Pecha Berry, among other items.”

I see... he thought, and closed the machine. “Try to go on! Dodge the Weedle’s moves and try to bite it!”

“Trah.” The ant nodded in response. As the Weedle squirmed forward Trapinch found himself barely missing the head-barb attack and shaking his head out of the way. He proceeded to bite Weedle’s head! Apparently he bit hard, because the Weedle found himself unable to move, unable to battle. Trapinch dropped the insect onto the ground, smiling weakly at Louis.

“That wasn’t bad for our first battle.” His new owner hugged Trapinch, who nudged his cheek. “I’ll get you back to full health soon.” He pulled out an antidote and sprayed the Pokemon’s wound with it. Trapinch winced for a second, but soon realized that the pain was immediately soothed. He wasn’t at full stamina, but at least he wasn’t hurting so much. He mumbled a pleasant “trah” afterward.

Brent pressed the button on his Poke Ball, opening it and sucking Weedle back in again. “Good game,” he congratulated, “and I hope I meet you again.”

Louis replied, “I hope I meet you again, too. Thanks for the battle.”

Brent nodded and headed back to the lab, where he’d been told they could revive fainted Pokemon. Since Louis was headed toward Route One anyways, he saw no need to bring Trapinch back into his ball.

He crouched and asked Trapinch, “You think you’re ready to go?”

“Trah!” Trapinch beamed.

“Alright...” As the duo left for the open road the boy mumbled, “Goodbye, Pallet Town...”
Chapter Two: Stalker on Route One

As Louis and Trapinch entered the route, he was surprised to find a man just standing there, a man he hadn’t noticed before. He wasn’t very notable, just a black-haired glasses-wearing guy standing in the tall grass. As the trainer approached him he asked, “Hey, kid, do you know how to catch Pokemon?”

“I think so,” Louis replied. “After you weaken them, just throw the ball and catch them. Right?”

“You’re right,” the man agreed.

“But what are you doing standing out here, anyway? It’s strange.”

“Oh, I’m a salesman partly, but I’ m not here to sell stock. I’m just here to show new trainers the ropes.”

“Okay...” That still wasn’t a good explanation, but he knew he wasn’t going to get anything else out of him.

As they started to walk away, the man suddenly continued, “Oh, have this.” He tossed him a Potion spray bottle, which Louis just barely caught. It was blue, and its shape somewhat resembled a bird to him. “That’ll heal your Pokemon if you spray it on them. Your Pokemon looks weak. By the way, I work at the Viridian City Pokemart, and we sell a lot of Potions.”

“Trah...” The ant nodded and smiled wide. The spray stung a little on contact, but immediately afterward it began to heal him. Trapinch was at full health again. Pressing the button a few more times, Louis found there was hardly enough solution left for another use and stashed it in his orange backpack’s side pocket.

“Seeya!” The man waved. Louis only looked at him for a second, then the two started on their journey again, walking quickly through the grass. The farther away from him, he figured, the better.

The tall grass tickled Louis’ chin, and Trapinch was having a hard time maneuvering through it. “We’ll get to Viridian soon,” his trainer assured. Trapinch nodded in response.

As they were walking, the ant accidentally stepped on a Pokemon - a Rattata! “Ruh!” the purple mouse screeched as his nubby leg pushed down on its back. Its voice was high-pitched and strained, so much so that the ant was startled off of it.

Instead of doing the sensible thing and try to get rid of it himself, Louis decided it was time for his first wild Pokemon battle.

“Trapinch! Use Bite!” Louis pointed dramatically at the enemy, backing away from the area to give the battlers some space.

“Traaah!” Trapinch clamped down on Rattata, stunning it and almost knocking it out! Just as the trainer was certain of victory, the rat bit the ant’s limb with its own huge incisors! Trapinch released his bite, and they soon got into a battle of nipping one another, trying to dodge the other’s mouth. Though Louis certainly found the battle amusing to watch by this point, he found it a good time to check Rattata’s PokeDex data.

”Rattata #19: The Mouse Pokemon. Rattata can be found in most regions, mainly urban areas. Rattata are extremely cautious, and even when they sleep they continue to listen and move their ears around. They have an impressive vitality, and are not picky about what they eat or where they live. Where one lives, there are sure to be several more.”

As he closed the machine, Louis issued his next command. “Don’t try and dodge. Just try to make the final blow!”

Trapinch grounded itself, pushing its feet deeper into the ground. Now steadied, he could concentrate more on biting the enemy rather than being so cautious. As the rat drew near, the ant bit its head! The blow was fatal, knocking it out. Trapinch let go once he was assured that the damage was done.

“Good job, boy.” Louis hugged his Pokemon’s big head, and they both smiled. Immediately afterward they continued walking.

Further into Route One, Louis paid more attention to the sights, the things around him then just concentrating on pushing forward. The magnificent green trees stood high above them, giving him a clear idea of how big the region of Kanto was. Brown-and-yellow Pidgey fluttered about, shaking the leaves off of them. More Rattata scurried beneath their feet, hidden by the thick grass. They had to curve around tall, rocky ledges further into the route, and he noticed that they would be easy to jump over should he ever come back.

By the time Louis figured they were about halfway in, they found a tree that sprouted fruit - berries, to be exact. The tree was a withered blue, with only leaves on the very top. Its berries were small and pink, almost triangular. Since the sun would set soon, he figured they should stop for the day. In order to check if they were safe to eat or what and what type of berries they were, Louis checked the tree with his PokeDex.

”Persim Berry - a berry that when eaten is said to improve mental health and function. The persim plant loves sunlight, and the more it gets, the more vividly its berries grow. Its flavor is mildly spicy, dry, bitter and sour.”

“Okay...” Closing the machine he picked a berry from the tree and tossed it in front of Trapinch. At first he looked up at the trainer inquisitively, but then he understood it was food and ate it. It wasn’t his favorite flavor (in fact he really didn’t like the fruit at all), but it was all they had. Louis, forgetful as he was, forgot to bring food from home. Trapinch smiled a little at him, appreciating the thought of him feeding his new friend. “You’re welcome,” he cheerily replied, sitting down and having some berries himself. He found the flavor a bit dull himself, even though it was a combination of flavors. Louis took a big red canteen and a silver water dish from his bag. The canteen was full, since he’d forgotten he even had one for the whole journey thus far, and it surprised himself that he’d been going on without water. He first poured water for his friend, which Trapinch graciously accepted and lapped up quickly. He nearly drank all of the rest before remembering it might be best to save it for tomorrow. So they set up camp for the day...

As the sky was turning a brilliant red and the berry tree had been stripped of its fruit, another trainer approached their camp with her Pokemon. She had short brown hair, kept out of her face by a white headband. The trainer was also wearing a red shirt and black shorts with stripes running down the sides. Her Pokemon was brown and star-shaped, with a sparkling red gem at its core. The Pokemon’s core flickered, making an echo-like sound.

“What is it, Staryu?” She looked down at the star. “Another trainer? Wild Pokemon?” Staryu’s gem flickered again at the former, and pointed to some trees. They ran closer, and she found Louis and Trapinch!

“Huh?” Louis, who was about to drift off to sleep, looked up at her. “Someone else is on this route?”

“Trah?” Trapinch seemed to mimic his trainer.

“Hey,” she said. “I’m Quinn. Do you wanna battle?”

“Uhh, sure.” The screen on the PokeDex next to him glowed, automatically reciting another PokeDex entry.

“You haven’t turned off that feature? It’s gonna get annoying soon enough, won’t it?”

“You have a point...” He picked up the machine and read its text:

”Staryu #120: The Star Shape Pokemon. Staryu are found on the coasts of all regions. Staryu has an organ called the core, which is also a prized red gem. As long as its core is unharmed it can regenerate lost body parts. At night the core glows faintly with the pulses of a human heartbeat as several Staryu float up to the surface and collectively flicker. Its emotions can be deciphered via the flashing of its core.”

“Back to the conversation. Isn’t Staryu a water-type, putting my Trapinch at a disadvantage?”

“Relax. I’ve tried getting Staryu to spray water and he can only tackle.” The star appeared to frown, wilting a little. “So are we battling?”

“Sure, don’t be so pushy about it. Trapinch, are you in?” He nodded. “Good.” They moved towards a flowery clearing and began.

“Go, Staryu!”

“Staaaa!” Staryu tried to intimidate the enemy by stretching its limbs out slightly.

“Go, Trapinch!”

“Trah!” Trapinch wasn’t afraid. Not to say he was too confident of success, but he knew that if he worked for it he would win the battle.

Quinn crouched down and whispered her strategy to her Pokemon. Louis had heard this wasn’t a legal move in official battles, but hey, who said this was official? He took this opportunity to do the same, telling Trapinch, “Just wait for Staryu to come close, then bite it. Okay?” His Pokemon nodded. Liking the strategy. Trapinch certainly wasn’t the fastest Pokemon, but if his reflexes were quick enough he could win without even taking a hit!

Now the Pokemon were ready. Trapinch waited patiently, and Staryu immediately assumed it had the perfect opportunity to strike. With near-blinding speed Staryu had tackled Trapinch, knocking him over! Clearly Louis and Trapinch had underestimated their opponent.

“Keep at it for now!” he cried, hoping soon it might work.

“Trah...” Trapinch had a hard time trying to roll back onto its feet. Taking the opportunity Staryu hit the ant repeatedly and in rapid succession. Each hit had sent the two farther into the air until they were even above the trainers! When Staryu was going to perform its sixth attack in a row, it missed, and the two fell to the ground! This time Trapinch had an easier time getting up, whereas even when Staryu got up he took a few seconds to recover. Now he was ready and poised to bite.

“Star-yuuu!” The star leaped at Trapinch, expecting to land a blow. This time, its leg was caught in the ant’s mouth! However frantically it shook, the ant’s jaws were too strong.

“Truh! Truh! Truh!” Trapinch grunted, smacking it on the ground. The way Staryu’s core glowed seemed to be begging to be set free, until its light faded. Staryu was officially knocked out, and Louis had won.

“Return!” Quinn’s Poke Ball sucked the fainted Pokemon back in.

“Well, thanks for the battle,” Louis said, grinning. “I think I should get some sleep now.”

“Wait!” Quinn grabbed his shoulder before he could go back to camp. “What about your money?”

“You get money from - oh yeah, right. Thanks for not just letting me go without it.”

“You’re welcome.” She handed him four silver coins, each marked “ku49l.gif5”, “ku49l.gif” meaning “PokeBuck”. He immediately put them into his pocket. “All real trainers give the winners money.”

So trainers don’t just get money from official battles, he realized.

“By the way, do you have a PokeSys?”

“No. Actually, I don’t even know what it is.” Louis felt like an idiot.

Quinn almost laughed, but then remembered that not everyone had such extensive knowledge by this point in their journey as her. “A PokeSys is something that fits on your wrist, and it contains a bunch of features built in - a radio, a phone, a watch, a global positioning system, contest stuff, and it can even contain your PokeDex data. There’s a lot of really useless features, too. I hear you can buy them in Pewter City which, if you didn’t know, is after Viridian Forest. I was going to ask if you could give me your number, but since you obviously don’t have one can I give you mine? I’d love a rematch.” She smiled earnestly.

“Sure.” She conveniently had a pen and paper in her pocket and wrote a six-digit number on it, writing “Cool Trainer Quinn” on the top. Louis nodded as he took it, putting it in his pocket with the poke.

“Well, I’ve gotta get going now. I want to reach Viridian City and I’m hardly what, halfway there?” Quinn said, looking at her own PokeSys, which Louis had just now noticed. It was bulky and went up her arm a little, but its sleek rounded design and shiny red color gave it more style. “Bye!” The “Cool Trainer” ran away, replacing her ball into her belt.

That night the two slept in a makeshift tent, dreaming of what might await them in the future.
Chapter Three: Picking Fights in Viridian City

For the last half of Route One, Louis went through more of the same. More ledges, more trees, another battle with another Rattata that was half as eventful. By three o’clock they had arrived at Viridian City. According to the sign on the path leading to it, Viridian was “The Eternally Green Paradise”, but somehow he doubted that. For a city it was smaller and quieter than he expected, but at least it was better than his hometown Pallet. In the middle of the green-roofed houses stood a Pokemon Center and a Pokemart, red-roofed and blue-roofed respectively. What really caught Louis and Trapinch’s eye was the Viridian City Gym building, which stood the tallest. Its roof was a dark orange. He could only imagine the thrilling challenges he and his Pokemon would face inside. Before he did any more challenging, however, he would need to stock up on items. And to do that, he would need more poke. And to get that he would need to battle. And before that, it was best his Pokemon rested at the Pokemon Center after that battle and long walk. After all, he was sure they both needed a rest after the long journey.

The automatic door of the center opened to reveal a white room containing several people at glass tables and their Pokemon, talking and trading things amongst themselves. At the very back of the room was a machine behind a desk, and he could only wonder what it did. At the desk was a lady in a nurse’’s uniform with pink hair. The longer sides were loops that went around her ears and back again. Louis was sure she was there to heal Pokemon. Was there someone to heal people? He didn’t want to think too far into that for now.

Carrying his Trapinch he walked hurriedly up to the front desk and asked her, “Could you-”

“Welcome to the Pokemon Center,” she responded, not giving him a chance to continue. His upwards-pointing finger slowly wilted as she continued. “We restore your tired Pokemon to full health. Would you like for us to heal your Pokemon?”

“Uhh, yes, please.”

“Please place your Poke Balls containing the Pokemon on this machine.” She pointed to the large machine next to her. Much to Trapinch’s dismay he was sucked back into the capsule and handed to the nurse. As the ball was placed on the machine, bright lights slowly flickered on and off. Trapinch was instantly healed! “Your Pokemon is now at full health.”

“Yeah, I think I could tell...”

She handed him the ball and bowed in a respectful manner. “We hope to see you again!”

“Wait, you hope my Pokemon gets hurt again?”

“We hope that if your Pokemon ever gets injured again, you’ll come to us. Have a nice day!”

What a weird nurse... Louis sat down at an empty table. As he did, he eyed someone familiar...the other person he’d met at Professor Oak’s lab! He had short red hair and a yellow cap, along with some plain gray clothes and a blue jean jacket. In his lap was what appeared to be a large brown lump. On closer inspection it was actually a Swinub, which had a small pink snout and squinty black eyes. Under that snout was a pleasant smile.

”Swinub #220: The Pig Pokemon. Swinub are found commonly in icy caves. It has a keen sense of smell, which it uses to find mushrooms and even hot springs under the land. Swinub also uses its nose to scrape away dead grass.”

Without further delay, Louis approached him, saying, “Weren’t you at Professor Oak’s place yesterday?”

“Yeah, and you were too,” he replied. “I never got your name. I’m Dave.”

“I’m Louis.” The two sat around the table, Swinub still sitting and doing nothing besides wiggle every now and then. “Do you wanna battle?”

“Sure. We’ve got nothing better to do, do we?”

They stood in a pink flower patch by Viridian Pond, which was rather calm today. Without further delay they sent out their Pokemon.

“Go, Swinub!” The pig simply snorted, stepping forward.

“Go, Trapinch!” The ant steadied himself, smiling.

They had already issued their commands earlier, and now were almost sure they needn’t give any more. Swinub started off with a tackle, the only offensive move it knew. Trapinch grabbed it with ease, clamping down on it hard. Luckily the pig Pokemon had scraped some mud from the riverbank, and flinging it into Trapinch’s mouth caused him to release his grip, since the taste was so bad. The mud was promptly spat out.

He knew our strategy... Then again, the ant having such a huge mouth made it almost a given. “Just concentrate on biting it, not spitting!” Louis ordered.

“Trah-” It coughed a few more times, then opened its mouth just wide enough for him to grab Swinub as fast as possible. As it started to draw near, Trapinch clamped down...but Swinub had swerved away! From the side Swinub rammed into the ant, knocking him into the water! They both knew that most ground-types couldn’t swim well, so Dave let Louis swoop in and rescue him.

“You win,” Louis grinned, his wet hand shaking the opponent’s. He then sucked his weary Pokemon into his ball again.

“I’ve been working on using the terrain against the opponent personally,” Dave pointed out. “My strategy pretty much changes with the environment.”

“If I’d known you were gonna push Trapinch into the water, I would have never battled by a pond.” He smiled. “Do I owe you money?”

“No, it’s okay. The experience was all she needed.” He pointed to the Swinub, which was wiggling onto his leg. “I’m going out to the route east of here, Route Twenty-Three.”

“After I’m done at the center I’m going to have to win some more battles so I can buy some items. If you’re going now, I’ll see you later, Dave.” He smiled and waved as he walked away.

“Bye.” The boy and his Swinub headed off into the next route.

After enjoying some free food at the Pokemon center with his buddy, Louis picked another battle with Joe, a short kid who was already equipped to go Pokemon catching. He carried around a long net, and wore a sun hat with a white T-shirt and shorts. They fought closer to Route One.

“I’m gonna beat you sore!” the boy growled, sounding more cute and harmless than threatening.

“We’ll see.” Trapinch, as usual, steadied himself.

“Caterpie, tackle ‘im!”

“Caaa...” The green worm rammed slowly and comedically into the ant. Before its red crest could touch him, the worm was crushed in its jaws. Trapinch spit Caterpie out before he was crushed to death.

“B-but I have another! Go, Pidgey!” The caterpillar was recovered, replaced with a pigeon. Louis remembered seeing them in Route One, only he couldn’t get a close look at them before they fluttered away. “Ground attacks can’t hit my Pidgey! Your Trapinch is practically dead!”

He’s forgetting that Trapinch’s bite isn’t grounded, Louis thought. And if his Pidgey’s dumb enough, he’ll be caught!

Pidgey swept up some dirt, plotting to blind his enemy. Since Trapinch’s squinted eyes were already used to desert storms, shielding them was no problem. He simply waited for his “prey” to draw near. As Pidgey was about to tackle him from behind, Trapinch turned around and snagged him! In a matter of seconds the match was over.

“O-okay! You win! Take your prize money!” He’d been given a big silver coin marked ku49l.gif50 for winning the match, but it wasn’t nearly enough to buy anything useful in the wild. After all, past Route Two was Viridian Forest, a maze filled with wild Pokemon. Plus, Trapinch was getting tired of battling for the day, even if the Pokemon Center brought him back to full health.

Shortly after his battle with Joe, Louis found some paper tacked onto a tree. It read as follows:

“Wanted: Ledian!

Will provide three Poke Balls as long as you agree to capture it!

Ledian are extremely rare in Route Two! If you can get one to me, I will pay you ku49l.gif5,000!

Visit my house at 110 Viridian Road for more info!”

On the paper was a poorly-drawn illustration of what what supposed to be a Ledian. From what he could tell it was a red-and-yellow Pokemon, probably a bug-type by the looks of its big blue eyes and antennae. It had four arms with white fist-like hands, along with two big red feet.

It may be tough, thought Louis, but if I do catch it, there’s a lot of money in it for me.
Chapter Four: Hunt on Route Two

“Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!” A girl hugged Louis after he agreed to go catch the Ledian the next day. She seemed to be little over twenty years old and sported a brown ponytail. Her pink-and-tan attire wasn’t very outstanding. “Ledian’s my favorite Pokemon!” The three red-and-white capsules were placed in his hand, then put into his red belt for easy access.

“Your welcome...” He wasn’t quite sure what to say. Louis lightly pushed her away, but she didn’t seem to mind. Earlier she’d told him her name was April, and she seemed kind, if not a bit crazy for Pokemon. Bug-types were sitting and flying around everywhere, from every region. They sat on cabinets, ate from dishes off the floor, stood on their shoulders. In fact, a Butterfree sat on his, a big blue butterfly with sparkling white wings. He thought it would be interesting to get some info on these Pokemon, but it might have been rude to pull out a talking machine in somebody’s house. Louis wanted to stick around just to interact with the Pokemon, but decided he should catch April’s Pokemon first. After all, he wasn’t given those five Poke Balls for nothing.

After resting at the Pokemon Center (which let trainers stay the night, free of charge) he and his Trapinch arrived at Route Two, which looked much like the first, only it had less tall ledges and more flowers instead of tall grass. They had to walk a ways uphill, past some wonderful landscape and plants. He was even able to scan one Pokemon playing in the flowers, a purple bunny covered in thorns. Louis figured he would try and catch one later, with his own ball.

”Nidoran♂ #32: The Poison Pin Pokemon. Nidoran♂ can be found in every region, commonly in grassy fields and plains. It has large ears, which can be turned in virtually every direction in order to hear even the faintest of sounds. The thorns all over its body can secrete a powerful poison.”

Luckily for them it was early morning and still cloudy outside, and Louis had heard the Ledian only came out during that time. After walking through the calm grasses he found what almost seemed to be a Ledian on a tree! Similarly to its artwork it was red, and also had black spots on its back. Its eyes were wide and had black irises, though he figured that might have been an error on April’s part. He was sadly mistaken; this was actually a Ledyba, as shown by the PokeDex entry.

”Ledyba #165: The Five Star Pokemon. Ledyba is found in some forests in Kanto and Johto. It is so timid, it will refuse to move unless it is with others. It secretes a scent to convey its feelings to others. In the winter thousands have been known to cluster and brave the cold.”

He didn’t want to just get Ledian’s pre-evolution. To satisfy the demand, he needed the real deal, not something he’d need to train for hours before turning it in. It didn’t sit right with him.

He and Trapinch spent around ten more minutes searching in trees and behind bushes, but with their luck they only found a couple of Rattata and some mild-mannered Pidgey in the branches. Even when Louis thought about giving up, Trapinch was still enthusiastic about the hunt, apparently. His large, near-comical smile somehow encouraged him to go on. Soon they had pushed away some tree leaves and found, slumbering on a branch, a Ledian! the PokeDex immediately piped in:

”Ledian #166: The Five Star Pokemon. Ledian is found in some forests of Kanto and Johto. It uses the stars as its energy, and as it absorbs it the spots on its back grow larger. At night it scatters a beautiful glowing powder, possibly pollen, over the area. In the daytime it is inactive, curling up like a leaf and sleeping on thick branches.”

Unfortunately as Louis was trying to turn the sound off for the thing, Ledian woke up, startled. “Ledi?” it murmured. Its attention was immediately drawn to the trainer fumbling with the machine. Now frightened, Ledian fluttered slowly away, still tired. Louis attempted to reach out and grab it, but Ledian was too high up.

Thinking fast, Louis dug through his bag and pulled out a persim berry. It was a little dried out, but still had some of its original aroma. He tossed it out in front of them, hoping it would somehow catch Ledian’s attention. The ladybug glanced at it lazily, then floated down to eat it. Remembering the PokeDex entry Louis saw that the spots on its back weren’t all that large. Ledian was probably hungry. As it nibbled at the berry, Trapinch crept up on it, preparing to bite.

“Now,” Louis whispered.

Trapinch clamped onto Ledian’s left leg! “Leh!” it cried in its squeaky voice. Ledian first tried to punch the ant, who swerved his head out of the way skillfully. The Five Star Pokemon emitted a supersonic pulse from its antennae, one so high-pitched it stung Trapinch’s ears.

“TRAHHH!” Howling in pain, Trapinch released its grip, releasing Ledian and letting it fly slowly away.

“Trapinch!” He hugged his Pokemon, trying to hold its mouth shut as it tried to bite him in confusion. Louis found some of the persim berry still on the ground and hurriedly shoved it into his mouth, remembering that it was said to improve mental health. Almost immediately Trapinch calmed down, slowing to a moan and panting slightly. He let go of Trapinch and looked around, wondering if Ledian could still be seen flying away. The trainer sighed as he found that it wasn’t, and they continued their search for another tedious, slow three minutes. Finally they found Ledian in another tree, sleeping once again.

Without hesitation he pressed the button on his first Poke Ball to activate it. He tossed the ball slightly upward, which sucked the ladybug in with a bolt of red light. The Poke ball tumbled off of the trunk and onto the ground, the button now glowing. The ball wiggled once...twice...and the duo watched, Louis eager to capture Ledian and earn his PokeBucks.

The Poke Ball stopped glowing, and the button snapped it shut. Ledian was caught! “Yes!” Louis whispered to himself, picking the ball up. The PokeDex was able to scan it as a male now, but he doubted that mattered. He ran toward Viridian City again, Trapinch following close behind.

The Ledian was released inside of April’s house, who once again hugged Louis with a big “Thank you!”

“Your welcome. By the way, I didn’t need these.” Louis handed her the two extra capsules, and she laid them on a table.

“Ledi?” The ladybug approached Butterfree slowly and curiously, with a tired and dreamy look on his face.

“Freee?” In an almost crystalline voice the butterfly replied, fluttering away to do something else. The other insects he tried to communicate with quickly seemed to lose interest, doing other things like eating and playing with trinkets.

“Ledian!” April hugged him tightly, so tightly that Louis was half afraid she would suffocate it. The bug struggled out for a few seconds before she let go of him. Ledian clung onto Louis’ back. Was he afraid? “Ah,, no, don’t be shy~!” She tried to rip him from his shirt, but failed. “Oh. Well! Looks like he’s not going anywhere, is he? I promised you I’d give you the money for catching it, so I guess I have no choice!” April handed him a 5,000ku49l.gif bill, which was simply a green piece of paper-like material marked with the text and some fancy designs. “And if it’s staying with you, you can also have this sleeping cage! Since Ledian’s used to sleeping in the day you’ll have to make it sleep in this. That way, it’ll get used to being active at day!” She took what looked like a black panel at first from a cherry-wood cabinet, then unfolded it into a large cage with circular lights at the top.

“That’s nice and all, but won’t you want to use that in the future?” he was personally amazed at the thing; so big, but able to become so small. Did it produce its own electricity?

“I have a lot of money on my hands. I’ll get a new one!” Louis couldn’t help but feel bothered by her overly-peppy tone.

He put the thing in his backpack and smiled. “Thanks! Now, I think I should be going.”

“Oh, I understand. You’re a trainer, and you need to get on the road by noon, right? Well, bye!” She waved and smiled with her eyes closed. It looked a bit odd and almost disturbing to Louis and Ledian, but they got over it. He waved back and grinned as he left, satisfied with both his money and his unexpected new friend.
Chapter Five: Viridian Forest: A Natural Maze

Louis was ready for Viridian Forest. He had six Poke Balls, four potions, two antidotes and a map at his disposal, wanting to save the rest of his money for later in his journey. When thinking about whether he should hunt for Pokemon in Route Twenty-Two first, remembering rumors about seeing a fire horse known as Ponyta running through, he then recalled how hard it was just to find Ledian, who already had an advantage over the other insects found in the woods anyways. Without further ado, he stepped past the wooden sign marking the boundary between the route and the forest.

From within, the afternoon light was virtually gone. They could make out objects, but not their details. The oak trees looked almost clawed, the grass waving ominously. Trapinch and Louis walked slowly and carefully on the moist dirt, on the lookout for other Pokemon and people. The ant noticed what looked like a Caterpie, which quickly squirmed away into a nearby bush. Ledian hovered over his shoulder, sometimes touching him on accident and giving him a shiver.

He held his map over the light of his PokeDex, a map which was so curled up he was hardly able to see it while holding it with one hand. According to the map, if he went straight up and then left, then northwest again, he could go straight north from there. The forest wasn’t so hard to navigate after all, was it?

THOOMP!

Something fell and bounced off of his head! Looking down the three saw something green, struggling back and forth. Louis’ PokeDex activated and explained:

”Metapod #11: The Cocoon Pokemon. Metapod can be found in many forests around the world. Its shell may be hard, but its innards are weak and tender. Metapod can’t withstand a harsh attack. It quietly waits within for its evolution.”

Louis backed away a few steps. He saw this as an opportunity to battle. “Ledian?”

“Di?” The insect looked up at him curiously.

“I want you to punch that thing...” Louis glanced at the machine. “Comet punch.”

He nodded, floating slowly and just above Metapod. “Le....didididididiii!” It was jabbed repeatedly by Ledian’s fists, and its shell was soon heavily damaged. Eventually it stopped wriggling completely, and it was clear Ledian had won.

They heard footsteps ahead, and the two Pokemon braced themselves. As the silhouette came closer, he was clearly a bug catcher, much like Joe. They looked incredibly similar, which Louis thought was strange. Was it just because of their similar attire, or were they actually related?

“Hey, you,” he said, pointing. “We battle.”

“...Alright. Trapinch, get ready for battle.”

“Trah!” After seeing Ledian pummel that Metapod, Trapinch was more than ready to fight.

“Go, Bert!”

There’s a Pokemon named Bert? Just as he thought that, a Weedle emerged from the capsule!

“Dell!” it screeched, much like Brent’s Pokemon.

“You haven’t nicknamed your Pokemon, have you?”

“No, but I didn’t think you were supposed to. Anyways, on with the battle. Your move.”

“Bert, poison sting!”

“Dell!” In the darkness it was hard to see exactly where Bert was and where he would strike, and the tall grass just made it even harder. A stinger caught him by surprise on his hind leg, and as he turned around Bert had already gone. Poison hadn’t been injected, but there was still a nagging pain under his skin.

Wanting to be ready for the next hit, Trapinch kept an eye out for the Weedle. He scouted the surrounding area the best he could. Where the grass rustled more than usual, he focused. When something shined ever-so-slightly in the darkness, he opened his jaws wide. Even then, he was still stung on his other hind leg. Luckily for him he was a ground-type, and his thick skin usually prevented toxins from seeping in.

“Try ripping out the grass around you!” Louis tried to think strategically.

“Go faster!” The bug catcher commanded, wanting to attack full force.

The Trapinch tried to rip out the thin grass in front of him using his teeth, and went as fast as he could. He quickly stepped forward and grabbed Bert from behind!

“Dull! Dull!” he cried in surrender. Bert was immediately recalled.

“You may have won once, but I won’t let you win again. Go, Paul!” From the next ball came a little Caterpie. He wiggled. “Now use a string shot!”

“Caaa...” From below Paul’s mouth came a webbing-like material. Trapinch tried to sidestep it, but some of the silky material still caught his leg. Now Paul assumed he was able to tackle successfully, but was immediately caught by Trapinch. The bug catcher knew the match was over, and that both of his Pokemon were no match for one of Louis’. Paul was recalled before any more damage could be done.

“You win this round, but if I ever see you again I’ll be better.” He dropped seventy-two PokeBucks into his hand, grinning slightly. He walked slowly away into the heart of the forest. Looking back at the map, Louis wondered whether that trainer was going the wrong way or he was going the wrong way. Determined to keep going his way, he marched on.

As he went, he thought about naming his Pokemon. Would Trapinch really accept a name after all this time? It had only been a few days, but probably not. As for Ledian, he thought he had a good name for it; Nova.

Of course. They’d come to a dead end, a place where the branches ahead were so tangled one could not possibly get through without injury. Was cutting off branches with Trapinch’s jaws against the law? As Louis sighed and turned around, he saw something wandering around in the grass. He opened his PokeDex, which revealed it to be a Nidoran♂! Its movements looked confused, and he had probably gotten lost in the forest.

I don’t think I can miss this! Louis quietly said, “Nova!” The two Pokemon looked at him for a second. He pointed to the Ledian, who nodded in response. “Nova, use the comet punch on it.”

Nova tilted his head for a second, but seemed to understand. “Dididii!” The ladybug was able to land three hits on the rabbit’s side before recoiling. One of the thorns coming from Nidoran’s skin had injected poison! The rabbit took this opportunity to strike with the horn on its forehead, then dashed off into the wilderness.

“Follow it!” With his command, they ran and flew after the figure. “Nova, supersonic!”

As they went Nova emitted a pulse from his antennae, causing Nidoran to stumble and trip. While it was recovering, the Ledian tried another comet punch on him and was able to dodge all of his poisonous thorns, even as he struggled onto his feet. This was Louis’ chance to throw a Poke Ball. The ball swallowed Nidoran up and shook once...twice.....the capsule burst open, and Nidoran scampered off! Louis was determined to catch up. He picked up the ball and ordered his team to chase after it, Nova sending sonic pulses along the way. The second time the ball was thrown.....Nidoran was caught!

Now that the Pokemon was practically guaranteed to obey him, Louis released him immediately after using an antidote on Nova and sprayed a potion on the rabbit. He struggled around a bit for a second; the natural response, Louis assumed. “Good, Rabby,” he said calmly, thinking of a name on the spot. After patting Rabby softly and carefully on the head he continued through Viridian Forest, the bunny running behind him.

Louis spotted a familiar figure ahead. It was Brent, and by his side was a three-foot-tall hornet Pokemon. Its red eyes shone more brightly than most of their surroundings. Eerie, he thought. His PokeDex activated, but he immediately flipped the cover down and put it in his backpack’s side pocket. “Brent, is that you?” he asked.

“Nih,” Rabby squeaked, running next to his foot. Why did he speak just now?

“Yeah,” Brent replied. “And you’ve caught more Pokemon too. Are you up for a battle?”

“I’ll meet you outside of the forest.”

He nodded and walked toward the dead end, his hornet hovering behind. Louis thought Nova felt a bit uneasy at the sight, even if he was taller. The trainer and his Pokemon started off again; this time, the right way.

Finding a yellow cocoon Pokemon in front of them, Louis found the perfect opportunity to train Rabby, who was anxious to fight. The PokeDex, which was out again, had this to say:

”Kakuna #14 The Cocoon Pokemon. Kakuna is found in various forests around the world. It may seem idle, but within its shell Kakuna is preparing for evolution. At times its shell can become hot from this constant preparation. Inside it is soft, but it also hides a poisonous barb which it can use to attack enemies. It clings to trees and under leaves to avoid being seen by predators.”

“Rabby, peck!”

“Nihh!” Using its large incisor tooth, Rabby ripped through the cocoon with surprising ease and speed. Louis could already tell the Nidoran would become a valuable member of the team.

Throughout the rest of the forest Rabby nearly murdered any insects in his path, gaining considerable strength as he did. Though it took almost the remainder of the day, they finally arrived at the exit! Remembering that having his Ledian so active at this time might make it drowsy in the daytime, Nova was recalled for the time being. He hoped this was a fight for his other two Pokemon. He sat on a wooden bench under the stars, hands behind his head. The stars sparkled like gems high above on a rounded blue canvas. They had always astounded him, for some reason. Rabby leaped into his lap, but Louis almost didn’t notice. Trapinch rubbed against his leg happily.

Sooner than he’d thought, Brent appeared from the trees. “Are we ready for a battle?”

Louis stood up, letting the Nidoran off of his lap. “Yeah!”
Chapter Six: Designated Rival Outside of Town

“Go, Ul!”

“Go, Trapinch!”

Brent’s Beedrill was unleashed upon the field, and Louis could tell it wasn’t at what would be considered a normal height. A Beedrill of this age would probably be about the height of Nova, or three feet tall. Ul was about a foot taller by the looks of it. To Trapinch, who crawled into the fray slowly, the wasp-like creature was massive. Not as tall as his trainer, but to defeat him would be a daunting task to be sure. To make matters worse, in addition to the stinger at his rear there was a drill on two of his four limbs. If the poison didn’t faze him, the sheer pain certainly would.

The trainers stood back and watched the battle unfold before them. Ul fluttered across the field, landing a direct hit on Trapinch’s mouth. The ant fell into the dirt and proceeded to be repeatedly jabbed by Ul’s relentless fury attack. By the time the wasp backed away, it became clear that Trapinch was knocked out, limbs up in the air.

Wow, his trainer thought, Ul’s been through a lot of training. What kind of name is Ul for a Beedrill, anyway? But it’s obvious that -

“What is it, Lou?” his designated rival asked. “It’s been a while, are you going to give up?” This was not said with any sarcasm or taunting, but he still felt like beating his Pokemon to a pulp, however cruel that may have been.

“Before we go on, how’s your Pokemon so strong?” Judging by the few seconds it took for the round to end, even if Brent had caught nothing else it seemed virtually impossible, or at least very hard to achieve. “I mean, any reason?”

“That’s a good question.” Apparently that meant he didn’t know, either.

He paused, waiting for a longer response, but when no came Louis sent out his Ledian Nova. Now under the moonlight the spots on her back began to slowly expand. This was a sign of him gaining the starlight’s energy, and a combat advantage. Nova certainly didn’t have the combat experience of Ul (from what he could tell), and would have to try and outsmart his enemy. After whispering the commands “Supersonic, then punch, guard when you can take the recoil and flee when necessary”, he was ready.

He started out by sending out supersonic waves, just as Louis had ordered. They had no effect on Ul, perhaps because he was a bug-type as well, perhaps because he was used to it. Ul tried to strike with his drill-hand and nearly succeeded. The drill merely scraped his side as he fluttered to the side, ducking down under the path of the stinger. For a while he was doing a fine job of not getting hit. The problem was, Ul was so aggressive that he couldn’t find a safe place to strike.

And as Nova was getting an idea, it seemed Ul had gotten stronger in his anger, almost raging. He attacked blindly and even hurt him fatally on occasion, right under his shell mainly. Louis figured it was quite the blind luck; Brent felt proud of the fruits of their training. If Nova could find a pattern, or a weak spot, or an opening, or a blind spot, or something, he could win.

Suddenly feeling confident, Nova came close to Ul - dangerously close. Ul was sure his attacks were connecting, but they seemed to bounce off in his wake. On closer inspection one could see a veil of something shiny...

“Ledi!” The Ledian jabbed Ul’s chest repeatedly, almost like the previous fury attack only meant to weaken, not to pierce. This attack didn’t quite defeat the wasp, but it certainly left him in some fatigue. Keeping the reflective boundary up gave him a chance to knock him out, Ul’s every strike bouncing off.

After a long minute, Ul slowly fell to the ground, officially KO'd. The constant reflection Nova used back there took a lot out of him, rendering both of them unable to battle, but that was fine as long as Ul was the only Pokemon they would have to face. After all, that Beedrill was likely the strongest thing the team had faced so far.

“Go, Spiral!”

As Louis was about to put away Nova’s Poke Ball, the announcement surprised him. Rabby, who’d been obediently sitting under the bench this whole time, instinctively ran out into battle. “Nih,” he growled not-so-menacingly.

He faced a round, blue amphibian with no arms. Her stomach was see-through, through which you could see her spiral-shaped organs, hence the name. Spiral was less threatening than cute.

Rabby looked to smirk. He stood for a second, as if energy had been built up inside of him. He charged forth, sticking out his large front teeth for the attack. Spiral only stood there waiting for him, but by the time Louis became suspicious and shouted “be careful!”, his Pokemon had already tumbled over his head and fallen asleep. Spiral’s eyes glowed an eerie light blue; a hypnosis technique. Now certain that Rabby would be asleep for a good while Spiral took a deep breath, then blew several bubbles at high speed. Somehow they caused damage upon impact, and in another “curb stomp battle” Louis’ team was bested in combat.

Both Pokemon were recalled and the two discussed things as they left for the city ahead.

“Good game,” Brent congratulated, shaking Louis’ hand.

“And to you. Polite as ever.”

Changing the subject Brent continued, “I’ve heard about something that might have caused Ul’s power surge. It’s called Pokerus, and it’s a temporary condition which causes the Pokemon to grow quickly.”

“That might explain it.” At first Brent getting a Weedle seemed like a rip-off on the professor’s part; whereas he and Dave had exotic starter Pokemon, Brent obtained a common forest-dwelling bug-type. Maybe he’d actually gotten the best one of the lot?

They were silent until they reached Pewter, the “Stone Gray” City.

Who slept in the tent?

The two = Louis and Trapinch.

It wasn't obvious? : o Quinn said she was going, so who else?

New chapter added! Since I can't double-post, no real point in separating these two statements, right? Anyways, Louis goes on a hunt for Ledian, one of the most unappreciated Pokemon in existence! Will he succeed or will he suck?
