Advanced Holo Tutorial [GIMP]

Recommended Posts

Well I actually just learned how to do this on my own, and I think I get the job done pretty well. The reason being is because other tutorials were very confusing for me, also I've been seeing a lot of topics on how to do advanced holo's. So please don't bash me.. "This is 347343th GIMP tutorial, your dumb blah blah" because it took about an hour to put this all together. So I hope I can help others who are confused by other tutorials too. Now, I did use cards that I have already made and posted, so I will be on you (no homo :/) if you steal. So hopefully the pictures help and it's not a fail tutorial, enjoy. Comment on it if you like, i.e how to improve it.

1. Okay, so obviously, open up GIMP, and open (Ctrl+O) up the card you wish to holo.

2. Now that you have your card open, you should a "Layers" window on the right. If you don't, on the Menu, click Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Layers. Here's a picture of what it should look like:

3. Open a holo sheet, if you don't have holo sheets, save this, the standard one people use:

4. Now, I know the holo sheets might be big, but in this tutorial, it really doesn't matter, it just has to be bigger then 244x248. Open up the holo sheet you want, and with the "Move Tool", place the holo sheet over the picture box. Here's what the "Move Tool" looks like:

So right now, it should look something like this:

5. Right-Click on the holo sheet, and a box should appear, with File, Edit, Select, View, etc. Click on Edit > Copy.

6. Now, in the "Layers" box, find the layer your holo is on, in my case, it's brown holo.png. Click on the "Eye", your holo should now disappear.

7. Now, in the "Layers" box, click the Layer named "Background". Now press U, you should now have the "Fuzzy Tool", it's on top of the Toolbar if you don't have it on. Now, your going to have to do this by bits probably. All you have to do is in the background, click and drag, and a box should appear and keep getting bigger the further you drag. You might have to experiment with it, try to drag left, up, down, right to get a good shape. Make sure it's only on the background, not the character! So it should look something like this:

8. Now after you have the box you like, you can stop clicking. Right click in the area your box is in, click Edit > Paste Into. You should see your holo inside the box:

9. Now, in the "Layers" window, there should be a new temporary layer called "Floating Selection":

10. Continuing, in the "Layers" window, there should be a drop down box with "Mode" next to it. Click on "Dodge".

11. Repeat steps 7-10 until everything you want holo'd is holo'd.

Here's my final(s):

It really isn't as long as it seems, it takes about 2 minutes for me to do a card.
