Question:

When Izanagi or Izanami blinds an eye permanently, is the eye forever useless, even when transplanted into someone else, or can it be reused again?

I'm asking because if every clan member used Izanagi on themselves, that would explain how Tobi would have all those eyes in reserve.

That eye permanently goes blind and is forever useless.

If it didn't then the Uchiha would just swap eyes at a Sharingan convention and re-use Izanagi and Izanami.

Imagine all the Uchiha members just mix and matching eyes to find the best possible 2 eyeball combination. XD

There's also the fact that not every Uchiha member can awaken MS so they would basically just switch yes for no reason

of course Izanami and izanagi don't seem to require MS but still

Also, what if Tobi is using Obito's sharingan as a catalyst? Like, his true ability is to use other shinobi's Kekki Genkai and so he sought out Obito's sharingan. It would also explain why he can use rinnegan now and why he didn't use it entirely for himself.

and then there's the fact that regardless of what the origin of his abilities are, he seems to be extremely powerful and was working with/knew Madara, so why does he have to hide himself?

[spoiler 'My Theory on Tobi']

I suppose the only argument against Tobi not being Tobirama (the 2nd Hokage) is that he is dead and sealed. But seeing as Orochimaru was sealed by Totsuka and still exists may hint toward Tobirama's existence. Seeing as he created Edo Tensei, and Orochimaru was studying it, it's possible Orochimaru also studied his ability to seal himself into other people. There's also the fact that we never see the circumstances in which Tobirama dies in so it's possible that he sealed himself into someone just before his death, thereby creating the corpse by which he was brought back with and his existence as Tobi happening simultaneously. And seeing as he apparently knew Space-Time ninjutsu before hand, it might explain why he is able to use it with Obito's eyes (unless his Space-Time was, itself, a kekki genkai that he "stole")

yeah, there are a lot of assumptions in that theory but at least the names sound similar xD

Kakashi's seeming to hint that it is a Mangekyou that Tobi is using. He said "that eye", and Sharingan don't have personalized powers outside of Mangekyou, to my knowledge.

I think when Kakashi said "that eye", I think he was referring to Obito's other eye, not particularly a MS.

@iKira: the only reason Orochimaru is still alive is because he was inside Kabuto, even though the Totsuka Sword sealed Orochimaru, part of him was with Kabuto.

Nono, I realize that much.

But, the fact is, Sharingan are NOT personalized outside of Mangekyou, to my knowledge. It means he most likely has MS, even if it never visibly activates, which is why he has the eye storage. So he won't go blind, and be able to use it.

Oh, I know!

Tobi's Mangekyou is shaped like an ordinary Sharingan!

But then again, shouldn't it look the same as Kakashi's Mangekyou, regardless of ability differences....?

Well, if you notice, Kakashi seems to be able to activate it for a split second and then deactivate, which seems to work differently from Itachi and Sasuke's. So, it could very well be that Tobi can do the same.

That would be a rather anticlimactic answer :\

I have a situation:

Let's say Sasuke has his MS and goes blind. He then runs into Tobi's stash of Sharingan and steals 2 random eyes. Will Sasuke be able to use his own MS or will he have the MS that the random Sharingan contain (assuming MS hasn't been unlocked in the random pair of eyes)

Is that what you mean by Sharingan aren't personalized outside of MS?

Well of course he will have the MS that the random Sharingan contain.

But then again, no he wouldn't, because he could just transplant them and obtain the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan. Which he already has. Since he has it, he's not ever gonna go blind again.

Which is precisely my point

Suppose Tobirama was also capable of doing so as well?

Wouldn't be the first time Orochimaru took one of his techniques

But Orochimaru has been notorious for putting himself inside others. The cursed seal, Sasuke, Kabuto, etc... I don't think Tobirama did that
