Yes Monkey. There are different kinds of era as you play the game longer.

You will all start out in the Early Civilization then the following periods happen:

Classical Era

Medieval Era

Renaissance Era

Industrial Era

Future Era

Each era will present you new units. Just think of it as an evolving game as you play it. You can also modify the era you want to start when you play the game.

Kinda like Empire Earth, an old game with 13 epochs.

This club doesnt appear in my previous posts, which is annoying.

When you start the game(Civilization 5), each player and AI will start at the same era/generation. You will grow and move to the next era depending on how you do your researches during the game. There are times when i'm in the Industrial era and my opponent is still stuck in the Medieval Era. Sometimes, it's the other way around. It's not just a battle of brute force, Monkey. Most strategy games will just offer you a build, create, then battle. In Civilization 5, you also need to take note of your researches which will advance you to the next era. You have to take note of the gold in your empire. You have to feed your people. You have to tactically expand your city. You also need to make your people happy. One thing i learned is to advance as much as possible. Imagine how many knights are needed to destroy a tank. It is possible, but it somehow feels realistic. hahahahaha ^_^

In one of my games, an opponent spent 4 knights(team of 5) just to sink a tank of mine. At that time, i had 8 tanks which overwhelmed him. He was trying to pull a diplomacy victory over me. It almost worked. Again, there are a couple of ways to win a game.

It may sound complex, but once you play the game, it will come naturally. The help you get from advisors and the game interface is very friendly and streamlined. Those things add spice and challenge to the game. The game is specifically designed for the patient and thinking people.

Try reading some reviews :) There are video reviews too.

Oh I understand how the game works in terms of population and resources management. I've played a lot of Age of Myth/Empires games and have watched dozens of top notch Starcraft II games on YouTube. I know the importance of management. I was under the assumption that the eras were races that you could choose from. I thought you were able to choose which era to start with and then just upgrade that specific era ( +ATK, +DEF, etc)

You can upgrade them to match the unupgraded version of the future era. But the more recent the era, the more powerful your unit will be. Swordsman is at a disadvantage against gunmen. Yet it is possible to kill gunmen using your swordsman, it will be difficult. Again, the game is more on the realistic side. some people does not advance immediately. Those people have a different plan than winning the game by world domination. ^_^
