Rainbow Life versus Bad Reaction to Simochi

Recommended Posts

Hello, I would like a card ruling on this problem.

On my side of the field, I have Ebon Magician Curran face-up, and a face-up Bad Reaction to Simochi trap.

During my Draw Phase, my opponent activates the trap card Rainbow Life and discards a card to activate it's effect.

Next, during my Standby Phase, Ebon Magician Curran's effect is activated. My opponent has one monster.

Ebon Magician Curran states "During your Standby Phase, inflict 300 damage to your opponent for each monster they control."

Rainbow Life states "Until the end of this turn, whenever you would take damage you gain that amount of Life Points instead."

Because of this, my opponent should gain 300 Life Points. However...

Bad Reaction to Simochi states "As long as this card remains face-up on the field, the effect of increasing your opponent's Life Points is negated and changed to inflict the same amount of points in Direct Damage to your opponent's Life Points."

This means that the 300 Life Points that my opponent would gain are negated, and my opponent takes 300 points of damage.

Which, because Rainbow Life is still active, is changed to a gain of 300 life points, and that in turn is negated and inflicted again by Simochi in an infinite loop.

Hmmm... It isn't. "As long as this card remains face-up on the field, the effect of increasing your opponent's Life Points is negated and changed to inflict the same amount of points in Direct Damage to your opponent's Life Points." So, the effect of "Rainbow Life's" gaining is simply going on for the turn, and any damage you do will simply do the damage. Now word about it.

But this is the key bit: read as written. For the entire turn, because rainbow life is on the field, whenever you would take damage you gain that amount of Life Points instead.

This means any form of damage whatsoever is turned into a gain in life points.

The gain generated from this card matches the requirements to use bad reaction, which clearly says it negates the gain before dealing damage, making it two seperate stages, and causing the loss of life points to be a destinctly new set of damage.

it's not just a gain being converted to a loss, it's new damage because of the way simochi is written, which triggers the effect of rainbow life, causing simochi to act up again.

If you activate "Rainbow Life" and your opponent has "Bad Reaction to Simochi" active' date=' whenever you would gain Life Points with "Rainbow Life" you will receive damage instead.[/quote']

Problem solved.

Yep. I was just looking it up.

EDIT: WHO RUNS RAINBOW LIFE!?

EDIT: lol, nevermind. It's a chainable Trap Card that can screw over DSF and prevent an OTK from JD or something for a turn.
