[spoiler=Chapter Three]

Chapter Three

It felt like forever but eventually they landed feet-first in a forest. To Gabrielle, the unkempt light green grass and the occasional odd clover was only knee-high; to Cece and Jake they would have drowned in a sea of green plants if it wasn’t for Gabrielle’s magic keeping them in the air.

“Where are we dudettes?” asked Jake as his body spun around, taking in his surroundings. They were shadowed by magnificent trees standing tall with age. Barely any sunlight could breech the trees.

“We are in the Forest,” answered Gabrielle. “Home to insects, plants, beasts and warrior-beasts. Come, let’s move.” She pointed ahead and began to walk, her legs cutting through the grass like razors. Her enchantment kept Cece and Jake in the air.

As they walked through the forest, it was incredible how many life forms there were. Every now and then, Dungeon Worms wormed their way up through the grass, curious to see the newcomers, before burying themselves back in the nutrient-rich soil. Giant Fleas buzzed before their eyes, and 4-Starred Ladybugs of Doom and Petit Moths lived in the holes of trees. Even the plants could be surprising; several times they saw Dandylions suddenly getting onto their feet and shifted away from sneaking Nettles. They also saw the outline of beasts such as Ancient One of the Deep Forest lurking in the shadows, their eyes following the small party.

“I don’t like the attention dudettes,” said Jake nervously as he kept looking around.

“Indeed, our presence will not be so kind at first. Have patience Jake, Cece,” said Gabrielle. “In any case, we are breaching rule number four.”

***

Rule no. 4: Never enter another homeland without at least a week’s notice.

Unfortunately Gabrielle was right. They had barely taken another step forward after her words when a distant buzzing alerted her. Cece and Jake yelped as they suddenly shot towards Gabrielle, sitting forcefully on her shoulders. They soon saw why though.

A swarm of about 10 Insect Knights were flying towards them at breakneck speed. Each Insect Knight was carrying a sword and shield and looking very menacing. However it was nothing to their leader, who was at the heart of the swarm. They could immediately tell who it was; he carried the longest sword and the biggest shield.

“Brace yourselves,” warned Gabrielle. Already her hands were glowing with a faint golden aura. By now many more beasts, plants and insects had appeared, all eager to see what was going to happen. “We’re about to be attacked.”

And so they waited for the Insect Knight swarm to approach.
