kimmy1235
Hi there, have you ever wanted to make your own story based on the Yu-gi-oh but don't have the creativity to come up with the plot or characters for your masterpiece of modern literature. Well not a problem, with these simple rules and guidelines you can write a story that seems original even though your basing on a series that has re-used the same plot for about 10 seasons. I will be separating this guide into three parts that I will post over the next few days (Characters, Cards and Plot) and hopefully this will help you in your attempt to make something that will be exciting and hilarious. Who knows, maybe your story will be use for the plot of the next Yu-gi-oh spin off. The Characters: Yu-gi-oh is a series known for having characters in it that are about as out there as Pluto is from the planet Earth. In an episode you see pharos, jungle men, dueling monkeys, demons, angels, crazed magicians and amazonian warrior women who turn into tigers. This means that no matter what you come up with it will be ok because fans of the show have already seen the weirdest things under the sun. If you add a dueling ninja who play the card game in the shadows no one will say anything, in fact they might complain if you do anything less. These crazy characters will comprise of the villains and minor characters that will litter your fanfic like trash at your locale garbage dump. Now even with this freedom there are still many things you have to do or else it really isn't a yu-gi-oh series. First of you need the main character, you know that guy who will be doing most of the important stuff and winning every battle he or she is ever in. The only reason this person should lose a duel is because in it makes him/her a better person and develops his/her character. Either that or the opponent cheated. This character will have a deck made up of cards that would never work together in real life, even though he/she uses them together in a way that makes them unstoppable. Also add one creature with 2500 attack power just because. This will make that character the underdog when compared to his/her rival, who will have a monster with 3000 attack just because. It also helps if the character has the syllable "Yu" in it's name. Examples are "Yu"gi Moto, Jaden "Yu"ki and "Yu"sei Fudo. The next important character you need to add to your fanfic is the rival to your main character. This character is really vital to the plot since he/she will have about the same winning streak as the main character, along with being the one who will duel him the most and losing again and again at his hands. This character otherwise is better than the main character in every way, having more money and better cards that might actually work together in a deck. Also the rival's personality is always that of a pretentious douchebag, so you don't have to think too hard about making up this character. The villains are next. As stated before villains in yu-gi-oh have always been ridiculous so feel free to be creative. The only thing you need to know ahead of time is that your villain is going to try to take over or destroy the world using the mystic powers of a children's card game. If you make, oh let's say, an evil phyciatrist who is trying to take over the world of the duel spirits using a little girl as some sort of portal to get there no one will think for a second that that is silly or if they do they will continue reading your fanfic regardless. Just remember that villains use lots of dark monsters to show that they are in fact evil. Lastly you have the minor characters. These character will be everywhere your main character looks and will constantly challenge him to duels when he is not busy fighting the bad guys (or even when he is). These people are just as ridiculous as the villains, have weird accents, stupid names and decks that are worse than the main characters in usability. Out of all the minor characters there are a few staples you must add. First is the sidekick, this lovable character is always the worse duelist in your entire story, losing left and right until the main character teaches him/her how to actually play the game. You also need the love interest. This character is in love with the main character (even though the main character doesn't know it) and tries to prove his/her love by playing card games in an attempt to impress the one they love. Lastly, somewhere in our story add a set of twins. Yu-gi-oh had the Paradox Brothers, 5Ds had Ruka and Rua, even GX had Sarina who split herself in two. Besides, without twins what other excuse do you have to add tag dueling to your fanfic. Part 2 The Cards: Now that you have all your hilarious and awesome characters lined up for your fanfic you need to create the cards that they will use. These are vital because if your characters don't have decks then you aren't writing a Yu-Gi-Oh fanfic at all, your just writing a lame story that has a couple of the Yu-Gi-Oh characters making a cameo in it. First off, know that nothing is set in stone. The characters you use more often than others will have certain cards that they will use over and over, but somehow new cards will always find there way into your characters' decks, usually right before they face someone who they needed that specific card for. Next thing is that just as every character in your fanfic has a personality so does every character in you fanfic have a deck based on their personality. If the character is a child expect to put toys or fairy and unicorns in their decks. If your character likes sports slide a Battle Footballer in as a blocker. If they like space put the entire B.E.S. set in their deck along with Satellite Cannon. Likewise you main character's deck will be made up of weaker monsters to show how he/she is the underdog of the series. If you have problems coming up with combos for your characters don't worry. If you are any kind of player of the game you will probably remember back when you started the game and was just coming up with ideas for strategies that never seemed to work out. You have far out grown those by now, but your fanfic hasn't! Just fish out all your old card combos and give them to your characters. They will be able to make each one work out as you planned since they all have the power to get every card they need when they need it. Also, don't worry about forbidden cards, as the writer of the story you control the restriction list. When in dout toss in a Pot of Greed to give your characters the cards they need when they need one more than their hand will allow at the time. Don't think that you have to use cards that exist in the real world, you can make up as many cards as needed to keep your story interesting. In fact this is one of the few areas of your fanfic where you have to show your true creative powers. Word of advice though, since you will probably end up adding one or two of your own cards for each duelist in your story you should write down the stats and effects of each card you make. Making up cards that don't have the possiblilty of being real will be a cornerstone of your story line at one point or another anyways so you better get use to this. Lastly, and probably most importantly is that a few decks have to use alternative winning condition. Exodia or making a player run out of cards are good ones to use if you can't come up with one of your own, but since these are anti-climatic they are doomed to failure and are only in your story as another challenge for your characters to overcome. Part 3 The Plot: The plot is the back bone of your story. Without it you just doing one card game after another and that get boring after a while (those who sat through the first season of GX can follow me on that) but lucky for you your plot line has already been given to you. As said before your villains are going to try to take over the world using the dark powers a game made for children possesses. This is often linked to some ancient civilization like Egypt or Rome. If you want to use a new one try Atlantis, no one has gotten to that one yet. Next your main character needs a reason to fight these people, but they usually cause this themselves. Instead of killing the only person who can stop them in his or her sleep they will make a direct challenge to this person and if he/she refuses they will kidnap their friends and family to force him/her to fight them. This way you get to have a reason why your main character wants to go on this foolish quest without actually coming up with a legit back story. Now that the stage is set up you need to add one last thing to your plot and that is "Forbidden Cards of Ultimate Power". God cards, Sacred Beasts, Earthbound Gods, these all fall into that category and now you have to come up with your own. You might think this is hard but it really isn't. Just add a few monsters with 4000 attack points, effects that destroy cards on the field, abilities that boost attack and defense by the number of cards in a certain area or just make it so they cannot be destroyed by any means. With the power of these cards your villains will be more than prepared to defeat your main character (or so they think). If you were to put it into a storyboard it would go something like this: Main character is introduced, main character meets friends, main character meets rival, main character defeats rival, main character finds out about the dark powers behind the Duel Monsters card game, main character has a dilemma involving his best friend, main character overcomes said dilemma, main character meets villains, main character defeats rival again, main character defeats villains, main character lives piece fully for a short time. Don't forget to put in some filler battles though, the minor characters like to d stuff too. After that you go back to "main character meets friends" and repeat as much as needed to complete your fanfic. That about wraps it up. I guess the only other advice I can give is have fun. Remember to a certain extent this fanfic is more about you than the people who will be reading it so if you don't have fun with it you will just give up and quit. When the writer's not happy than nobody is happy. I hope my tips help you all out with your Yu-Gi-Oh fanfics. Good luck to all of you.
OMGAKITTY
XDI love this. Two major things you forgot though. You need to have underlying gay sexual tension between main character/rival and main character/sidekick. This is a must.
Flavour
So your saying if I make a guy called Yu Yuyu and give him a Deck of Vanillas, I'll be instantly popular in the Fan Fic section? Awshum. This guide makes everything so easy XD
Jovi Siagian
Wait, are you telling me if my main character has all Trap Cards and Spell Cards in his Deck but 1 monster with 2500 ATK then he lost once because he got shot by his opponent and then being revived, I can be famous in the world like Kazuki Takahashi is?! Cool story, bra.

Their rival is a prat with a 3000 ATK ace that never beats Yu..." ect ect, love it10/10 guide.

Sleepy
It just occured to me :) maybe the next spin off of yugioh will try to experiment a change and have a female protagonist for the first time. Name could be something like Yukino, Yuri, or such^-^ (they better make the story look more interesting in everyway this time <_<)-Yugioh DM:Its kinda behind in duels with all the speed and new things that has been added to the game, its like going easy on the beggining-Yugioh GX:I just watched it because it was yugioh related -_- its about the worse one in my opinion. The story I only count it in the Yubel season. Everything else is just things the people working on the anime felt like bumping regardless of how bad they were. The one thing that I like more on GX than 5Ds, is the graphics of the monstersRainbow Dragon/Armythyle/Yubel and awesome illustrations.....>>>>>>>> 3D stuff with lack on details like earthbound gods and the Savior Star Dragon (as it was shown in the anime)-Yugioh 5Ds:It has a great first season but I felt like season 2 was going slower, I felt some filler episodest in there too. I hope it doesn't stay like that just because it gained popularity... >_>

Protheus
It's really useful! Thanks for posting this! Oh and isn't the Doma Arc around Atlantis? I mean Dartz came from Atlantis.
Mysty
LOL necrobump. Anyway, Atlantis was taken in the DOMA Arc. You forgot a few details about the stereotypical yugioh series, including the fact that the rival has a 3000 ATK monster, generally a Dragon, and the sidekick generally has a 2400 ATK monster, also generally a Dragon. You also forgot the little kid who openly admits that they like the main character/thinks the main character is really awesome. Other than that, this looks good. I bet this is what the makers of the anime do when they make a new series of yugioh.
kimmy1235
I must have missed the DOMA Arc. Well you could try an acient civilization on mars or something, but by the way things look 5Ds is getting to that right now.

Mysty
Does it really matter? It already has most things listed. There may be some missing stereotypes and some mistakes, but it's mostly there. A discussion about this couldn't really last long.It could also be that this was necrobumped. Also, here's a tip for writing duels: write them on the spot. When a character gets in a tough spot, invent a situational card that will get them out of the problem.
