I need help with fanfic ideas (credit to larry cotter for thinking this up)

How about using a deck made from the cards you made on Card Maker, if you have a series of cards you know too well. And for the plot, you should probably start out slow. Make your character unwind a bit, so he can get to know the other characters in the story, then start making decks and strategies for the other characters, so they can use them in the story a lot often, but not TOO often. And for the names of your characters, try using the name of someone you already know in real life. Like your best friend, or your sister, or other members of your family including you. Or you can use a name you just thought of and someone who has that name in real life. That's all I can give you right now, so see ya and KEEP ON DUELING!

Ask yourself: What fic are you gonna write. Next, what are the characters, they can be based on your, friends, guys you know and others, about the plot, I'm not very sure what it's gonna be, most yugioh fics starts with fighting evil and ends in a happy ending (not so happy if you want a sequel). Also, start it fresh. I don't like giving characters naturaly since I don't want the writer to have stress using other's character. About decks, some real life cards + some Cardmaker cards. Also, you can visit the Deck section of this forum to find some decks. And Finaly.......Good Luck!!!!!!!! :)

1) Think of a main plot, and some subplots.

2) Think of all the characters you're going to use. Write down Decklists (20 cards should allready be enough), but try to avoid self-made cards.

3) Make several columns. In the left one, you write the chapter numbers, and above the others you write the names of the (sub)plots. Then, you fill in the table. Not all fields have to be filled in. Try to avoid fillers and unnecesairy details. (This technique has been invented by Rowling. She wrote a book about children who study Magic rather than YuGiOh.)

4) Avoid anime characters for the first five chapters. Keep them away as long as possible.

5) Start writing a dawn good Pilot in which we get to know the main character and his Deck.

Good Luck.

These are good tips so far. I just want to add the following things:

• As you probably see, Haou says to use archetypes you made up while Larrycotter seems to say to avoid made-up cards. I personally would say to have some characters have decks that are based on made-up archetypes, so they will be mostly, if not all, made-up cards. The flip side of this statement would be to have the other characters use decks that are real, but you can throw in made-up cards to spice up the duels and power up their deck.

• If you put in anime characters, don't change their decks up too much or their personalities.

• Use mostly names that are real. Throw in code-names like Aurax (aura) or Croak (frogs) for one-time characters if you want, but otherwise keep the names realistic.

• I would suggest going the extra mile and thinking of 3 main villains. That way, by the time you have introduced the main villain, you will have a few subplots thought up. By the time the first villain is defeated, you will probably have thought up more subplots. Usually this cycle continues for some time.

• Don't be afraid of using filler duels to make the fic bigger. Sometimes they can become very important in the plot or revealing something about a character, like how they feel and other times the are fun to write.

• There are two major things that will kill a fan-fic. The first is horrible English. If you do not know your grammar, it will make your fic look horrible, no matter what kind of plot it has. The second thing is copying another fic. If your fic looks like a near exact copy of another fic in the beginning, it will always be seen as a copy, no matter how different it becomes later. If it starts to lean towards copying something much later, then that's okay, just don't keep it similar for too long.

• Write what you're feeling. Ex: I felt pretty down when my Mirror Force was stolen, so in Chapter 8 of my fic one of the characters was really upset about getting her Mirror Force getting stolen. I find that the best writing comes from the heart.

• If you can, try cross-fic special duels if you want to. They can add a subplot and make for an interesting duel.

• Be yourself. Decide how you'll write your fic. Use your own strategies, decks, and all that. Don't use decklists if you don't want to (personally I dn't). Write the duels the way you want to. After all, It's your fan-fic.

I think that's everything I want to say.
