What happened to the old reps system?

Recommended Posts

If you weren't here before the new boards came about, you'll have no idea what I'm talking about...

Remember before we got the new site, how when you left a rep for someone you could link it to a thread so they/everyone else would know why you gave them that rep?

Why'd we get rid of it? I personally thought it was a great facet to the rep system, and today it would be really useful.

First of all, it might be somewhat of a deterrent for people (see: rep-scamming idiots) who give random reps for no reason at all, but more importantly, it would show people who got negged why the got negged.

What I've noticed is that typically when someone gets negged, they neg back all angry like "WHY THA EFF DID YOU NEG ME YOU JERK", only with technicolor language. That link would be able to show the people what they did, and how they could improve themselves as a forumgoer.

I know that back in my JF times, I would often neg someone for something, and out of their lack of comprehension for basic vocabulary, or simply the fact that they didn't know what I was negging them for, would return the neg. They'd then complain in the appropriate thread, and the mods would comply with the request, as there was no way to determine why I gave them the neg I gave them without asking me themselves, which takes far more time and work than simply deleting the neg.

So, in both a question and a suggestion, I'd like to suggest that we get this back, if possible.

I can recall no system resemblant of the one you described before January '08 (I left YCM in early February that year)' date=' and I'd been here since the start. How far back are we talking?

Around May/June 2K7... haha pretty far back...

I do recall a separate rep system around that time before the current one was introduced (on it, yugiohmasta444 achieved -44 or so, which were sadly lost in the switch). If it had a feature involving threads as you suggest it did, it's slipped my mind.

I know for sure that IPB forums have something like this' date=' so I know what you're talking about.

But as far as I know, it was never used on the current YCM. Whether or not it was used before 2007 I have no idea.

The current YCM officially started on December 24, '06, just in case that's not clear. ;)

Lol I highly doubt that something like this existed for 1 week before disappearing. xD

There was nothing of the sorts here.

I disagree Elsandero. It's beginning to sound awfully familiar to me...

The first forum could have had it =/

Not pre-2K7, pre-June 2K7.

read my reps look at the neg that has a link in it

Not what I'm talking about.

Frunk: I'm almost 139020302040594% (which essentially means I'm right) that we had this back then... That's probably why it's beginning to seem familiar... xD

Els: What was the first forum? IDK if I joined on the first forum or the second forum first. This is the second forum that I joined on (of YCM), but I certainly wasn't here when the Card Maker was downloadable. Just not as nice as it is now. Back when everyone's sigs had an image with nine cards in them... Ahhh the good ol' days... :D:D:D:D:D

What? The IF? No, I know for certain there was never any Rep feature on that forum (there were actually no features at all, as the Card Maker was based at Ficati.com at the time).

When the forums joined the Card Maker on Ficati.com on December 24, 2006 (7 days before "January 2007"), the site that exists today was born. While we got the current .net URL and changed servers and hosts a couple of times, the content stayed the same, so technically, the forum did the same.

It would have, as I recall, been either around the time of the first server crashes and subsequent server upgrade or when we switched from phpBB2 to MyBB, both of which certainly occured in the first half of 2007 (and may have been the one act, come to think of it). I am sure, for the record, that it would've had nothing to do with the changing of URLs.

@ Bhim (:P): Yeah, I'm prepared to agree with you on that.

I'd rather not see it tbqh...

It gets annoying. And has no value to moderation.

If a person likes the shiny green number, so be it. If they like dark red numbers, so be it. It has no effect whatsoever on a ban by me. Or how I see a member.

I see' date=' and have long-seen, the system as far more harm than good.

The current system?

Any type of Reputation system - or at least, any one where users can hand out negative Reps - which is where the problem comes from.

Problems with what opinions?

And people neg'ing for breaking rules? (imho the stupidest reason to neg).

Bah, it's a shiny green number. Let it go...

Rather than a reputation system, a "Thank you" system would be good.

Thank you system just increases Experience I think. You can use it when someone post resources, says something good, helps you, etc. It also cuts out reputation spam/scam. But I doubt YCMaker would install that -_-

I must agree, and I will say that I have seen many systems that only allow for positive reputation, which is the same as a "Thank you".

Painfully I just realized...

If this goes. So does one of the most basic aspects of Card Contests.

Sure we can donate points, and maybe something graphical. But in the end, that shiny green number is what it's for. And the simplest form to supply someones own desire for something back from winning.

Otherwise, YCM would have to implement something much more complex to keep that section.

So no, it shouldn't come back. Nor change.

I don't see how the return of the older system would do anything negative to Contests. If anything it would strengthen the rep report system.

And Rinne: What's a linkage system?

And the rep system seems to be almost completely useless at this point =/. What exactly is the value you see in it?

One would expect that without a Rep System, the Points System would become more valuable. However, a Positive Rep System is a desirable compromise.

It's times like these I wish I had my old Mod's Forum privileges as an ex mod...

I think I have a few ideas that we could discuss there to get the ball rolling, and that could snowball into some serious help to the forums... I suppose I'll wait for the verdict on getting my old account back or something? IDK...

Actually I'm kind of liking this being a "newb" to those who don't read links in signatures... I piss a lot of people off who read my posts and then are like "wow wtf I got owned by a n00b" [/arrogance :D]
